Updated: 2026-10-06

As of October 2026, EvenOut covers the four checks for a shared house: uneven rent shares, bills that repeat on their own, no daily expense limit on the free plan, and guests for a roommate who has not signed up. It also has no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day, and Settle Up lists recurring transactions under Premium.

Key points:
- EvenOut has no daily expense limit and no ads on its free plan, while Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.
- Rent that repeats each month is free in EvenOut and Splitwise. Settle Up lists recurring transactions under Premium.
- EvenOut adds a roommate who has not signed up as a guest, tracks their share now and merges it into their account when they join.
- In EvenOut, Who can edit set to Only their own keeps roommates to what they added or paid for, and a Viewer role suits a landlord. Splitwise says it has no group admins.
- A group in EvenOut holds up to 200 people, against 50 in Tricount, 30 in Venmo Groups and 9 in a free KittySplit Kitty.

## What should a roommate bill splitting app do?

A good roommate app handles uneven rent, bills that repeat, a free plan without a daily cap, and a roommate who has not installed anything yet.

- **Uneven rent.** Bedrooms differ, so the app should split by percent, shares or exact amounts, not only equally. The rent split by room size calculator shows the arithmetic.
- **Bills that repeat.** Rent, internet and a streaming plan come round every month, and an app that adds them for you removes a chore.
- **No cap on logging.** A house adds many small expenses, and a free plan with a daily cap means entering some of them on another day.
- **A roommate who has not signed up.** A new roommate should be in the expenses on day one, before they make an account.

## How do the nine options compare?

EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit, while Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day. Everything below is as of October 2026.

| App | Free plan | Paid option | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | No daily expense limit, no ads; repeating expenses, charts, search and the Splitwise import included | Pro, $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, for receipt scanning and the assistant only | Most households: repeating rent, share splits, guests |
| Splitwise | 4 expenses a day | Pro removes the cap and lists charts, search and ad-free; the price varies by plan and country | Households adding up to 4 expenses a day |
| Splid | Free, with in-app purchases | Excel export needs one | A fast start with no accounts |
| Tricount | "No ads or daily expense cap" (home page) | Premium was discontinued | Big houses, up to 50 people |
| Settle Up | The free version has ads | Individual Premium, $3.49 a month or $18.99 a year on its website | Default member weights for rent shares |
| Spliit | Free, no ads, no account | None, funded by donations | Open source with a shared link |
| KittySplit | Free Kitty for up to 9 people | Super Kitty, €2.99 once per group | A house of up to 9 with no sign-up |
| SplitPro | Open source, self-hosted | None listed | Someone willing to run a server |
| Venmo Groups | Up to 30 people in a group | Sending is free from balance, bank or debit card | US roommates already on Venmo |

Every app here splits unevenly. What differs is how you enter rent shares and how you add a roommate who has not signed up.

| App | Uneven rent shares | A roommate not on the app yet |
|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | Percent, shares or exact amounts | Add them as a guest, invite them later |
| Splitwise | Percent, shares or exact amounts | Invite by email or phone, add them before they accept |
| Splid | Unequal splits and several payers | No sign-up, they join with an access code |
| Tricount | By amount or custom shares | They join by tapping a link |
| Settle Up | Default member weights | Invite by link or QR code |
| Spliit | Percentage, shares or amount | Anyone with the link, no account |
| KittySplit | Shares, percentage or fixed amounts | Anyone with the link, no account |
| SplitPro | Percentage, share, exact amount or adjustment | They need to sign in |
| Venmo Groups | Equal by default, edit any amount | Venmo friends join at once, others accept an invite |

## EvenOut

EvenOut's Household group type is labelled "Rent and bills". Add rent once with Repeat set to Monthly, and the server adds each later rent as a normal expense around 9:00 in your time zone, with the same payer and split. The free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and reminders are free too.

Pick a split method per expense and mix them in one group. Roommates join from one group link that lasts 30 days, or you add someone as a guest and track their share now. "Only their own" under "Who can edit" keeps people to what they added or paid for, and the Viewer role suits a landlord who wants to follow along.

## Splitwise

Free users can add up to 4 expenses each day, and Pro removes the cap and adds charts, search and currency conversion. Recurring expenses (weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly), simplify debts and offline mode are on its free list. Splitwise says it has no group admins, so anyone in an expense or its group can edit or delete it.

A house with rent, electric, gas, internet, water, a streaming plan and 8 grocery runs has 14 expenses a month, and entering all 14 by hand takes 4 days at 4 a day. The [Splitwise daily limit](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-daily-limit) page lists the ways around it, and [how to split rent in Splitwise](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-split-rent-in-splitwise) covers unequal rooms.

## Splid

Splid says it is free and that no sign-up is required. A group stays on your phone unless you share it online with an access code. It works offline, handles unequal splits and several payers, converts amounts across more than 150 currencies, and says it finds the fewest payments.

Excel export is an in-app purchase. The [EvenOut and Splid comparison](https://www.evenoutapp.com/compare/splid) goes feature by feature.

## Tricount

Tricount's home page reads "Free. No ads. No limits." and its description says "No ads or daily expense cap." A tricount holds up to 50 people, and splits can be by amount or custom shares. Each tricount uses one currency, and expenses in other currencies are converted at the market rate.

Tricount's own comparison page says to add each recurring bill manually, so monthly rent is added by hand each month. bunq B.V. owns Tricount. Premium was discontinued and CSV and PDF export were removed. See [EvenOut vs Tricount](https://www.evenoutapp.com/compare/tricount).

## Settle Up

The free version has ads, and Premium removes them. The free list includes offline use, several payers on one expense, default member weights for rent shares and invites by link or QR code. Its Premium page lists recurring transactions, "Remind friends to pay", charts and Excel export.

On its website, Individual Premium costs $3.49 a month or $18.99 billed yearly. Group Premium covers every member of one group as a one-time purchase, not a subscription: $34.99 for a year or $134.99 for life, about $8.75 each for four roommates over a year. Prices differ by where you buy, so confirm at checkout. See [EvenOut vs Settle Up](https://www.evenoutapp.com/compare/settle-up).

## Spliit

Spliit's home page reads "No ads. No account. Open Source. Forever Free." It splits by percentage, shares or amount, lists recurring expenses (daily, weekly or monthly, marked Beta), and attaches receipt images.

A group is shared by link, and the link is the key. Its author lists the trade-offs: no notifications, no friends feature and no payment integrations, and a new device starts empty until you reopen your links.

## KittySplit

A free Kitty holds up to 9 people with no cap on expenses and no account needed. It splits equally, by shares, by percentage or by fixed amounts, and settles with the fewest transfers.

Super Kitty costs €2.99 once per group, with no subscription. It raises the limit to 100 people and adds currency conversion, preset splits for couples and families, receipt and photo attachments, per-category insights and a read-only link.

## SplitPro

SplitPro is an open source alternative to Splitwise under the MIT license, built for self-hosting with Docker. Recurring expenses need PostgreSQL with the pg_cron extension. Its README says the old community instance at splitpro.app is no longer maintained and stuck at version 1.3.4, so only a roommate who runs a server should consider it.

## Venmo Groups

A Venmo group holds up to 30 people. Expenses split equally by default, you can edit any amount or exclude a member, and Venmo works out the fewest payments.

Venmo itself requires you to be in the United States with a US bank account. Money moves through Venmo, so its weekly sending limits apply to rent. [Zelle vs Venmo for rent](https://www.evenoutapp.com/alternatives/zelle-vs-venmo-for-rent) compares how requests and limits work.

## Do budgeting apps split bills?

YNAB's guide "Splitwise and YNAB" says YNAB records the money and the splitting app tracks who owes whom, using a "Splitting" category. YNAB costs $109 a year or $14.99 a month, and up to six people share one subscription, but "all budgets are always shared with the Group Manager."

Monarch's Core plan is $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month. Its household sharing shows partners all accounts and transactions, and it says it does not offer a way to budget separately and apart. For roommates, the question is who owes whom, which is what a splitter records.

## Which app for 2, 4 or 8 roommates?

Pick by house size: repeating rent and a running balance matter from 2, and permissions matter at 8.

- **2 roommates.** EvenOut, if you want rent to repeat and a running balance between the two of you without making a group. Splid or Spliit if neither wants an account.
- **4 roommates.** EvenOut repeats monthly bills, has no daily expense limit on its free plan and no ads, and has a Viewer role for a landlord. Splitwise also repeats monthly bills, with 4 expenses a day on its free plan. Settle Up Group Premium works out to about $8.75 each for a year at its website price.
- **8 roommates.** EvenOut holds up to 200 people, and with "Only their own" 8 people can edit only what they added or paid for. In Splitwise, any of the 8 can edit or delete any expense. KittySplit's free Kitty fits 9, Venmo Groups holds 30 and Tricount 50.

Whichever app you pick, agree first on [what expenses roommates should split](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/what-expenses-should-roommates-split), and write the shares into a [roommate expense tracker](https://www.evenoutapp.com/templates/roommate-expense-tracker-template) or the [roommate expense calculator](https://www.evenoutapp.com/tools/roommate-expense-calculator).

## What EvenOut does not do

If you need to export the house ledger, convert currencies or send money through the app, EvenOut does none of those. It has no data export, each expense keeps its own currency with balances kept per currency, and Settle up records a payment without moving money. The app is English only, every roommate needs an account unless you add them as a guest, and setting up a repeat needs a connection.

To move a house over from Splitwise, [EvenOut](https://www.evenoutapp.com/) brings in a group for free from Splitwise's spreadsheet export.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Venmo enough to split rent with roommates?

Venmo Groups tracks the split and Venmo moves the money, so it can work if everyone is in the US with a US bank account. The limit to check is the weekly one. As of October 2026, an unverified personal account can spend $299.99 a week, and a verified one up to $60,000 a week, though Venmo can still decline a payment and can change limits. Sending from a balance, bank account or debit card costs $0.00, and a credit card adds 3.00%.

### How should roommates split rent when the bedrooms are different sizes?

Agree on shares first, then enter them as shares or percent. Say rent is $2,700 and three rooms get 4, 3 and 2 shares. That is 9 shares at $300 each, so the rooms pay $1,200, $900 and $600. In EvenOut, pick By shares on the rent expense and set it to repeat monthly, and each new rent expense keeps the same payer and split.

### What happens when a roommate who is a guest finally joins?

In EvenOut, only the person who added the guest can make the claim link. The link works once and lasts 7 days, and a new link replaces the old one. When the roommate opens it and taps Merge into my account, their shares move to the real account. The merge cannot be undone, so check the name on the guest first.

### Is a Spliit group private?

A Spliit group is as private as its link, because anyone who has the link can read the group and change it. Spliit's privacy policy also says a group cannot be deleted from the server inside the app, and you have to email hello@spliit.app. Share the link only with people who live in the house.
