Updated: 2026-10-06

EvenOut is hosted, so there is nothing to run, and its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. As of October 2026 the open source options are Spliit (MIT license, no accounts), SplitPro (MIT, built for self-hosting, sign-in required) and Cospend (AGPL-3.0, inside Nextcloud). Self-hosting means you handle the server, updates and backups.

Key points:
- EvenOut is a hosted app you sign in to with Google or email, so there is nothing to run. Its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads.
- EvenOut's Splitwise CSV import is free and brings over expenses and payments. SplitPro's README says expenses are not imported yet, as of October 2026.
- Spliit is MIT licensed and free on its own site with no accounts, so anyone who has a group's link can read and change that group.
- SplitPro is built for self-hosting. Its README says the old hosted copy at splitpro.app is no longer maintained and is stuck at version 1.3.4.
- Cospend runs inside a Nextcloud server under AGPL-3.0 and imports and exports CSV files that are compatible with Splitwise.

## Which open source Splitwise alternatives are there?

Three open source projects stand in for Splitwise: Spliit, SplitPro and Cospend. They share a label and little else. One needs no sign-in, one exists to be self-hosted, and one lives inside Nextcloud. As of October 2026, Spliit and SplitPro are MIT licensed and Cospend is AGPL-3.0.

Of the three, Spliit is the one that works without a server of your own, because spliit.app is free to use. SplitPro needs a server of yours and Cospend needs a Nextcloud server. EvenOut is hosted, so it needs neither.

| App and license | Where it runs | Sign-in |
|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | Hosted, nothing to run. Free plan: no daily expense limit, no ads | Google or email |
| Spliit (MIT) | spliit.app, or your own Vercel or Docker deployment | None. The group link is the key |
| SplitPro (MIT) | Your own server, with Docker | Required: email link, Google or OIDC |
| Cospend (AGPL-3.0) | Inside a Nextcloud server | A Nextcloud login, plus public links for everyone else |

## What does self-hosting ask of you?

The software is free and everything around it is yours. Three chores come with that.

- **Updates.** A self-hosted copy only improves when you update it. SplitPro's README says its old hosted copy "is stuck at version 1.3.4", while the latest release is v2.1.5 (1 August 2026). Cospend's README says it usually supports "the 2 or 3 last major versions of Nextcloud", so the server underneath has to stay current too.
- **Backups.** The database and any uploaded receipts sit on your machine. SplitPro's README says receipts are stored on local disk and tells you to make sure the uploads volume is persistent.
- **Extra setup for extra features.** In SplitPro, recurring expenses need a PostgreSQL database with the pg_cron extension, and push notifications need additional configuration. In Spliit, the AI features need an OpenAI-compatible provider.

A hosted app such as EvenOut leaves all three to someone else, while self-hosting gives you the database and the say over who can reach it.

## EvenOut: hosted, so there is nothing to run

EvenOut is a hosted app you sign in to with Google or email, so there is no server to run or update. The free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. It also covers five split methods (equally, exact amounts, percent, shares and by item), spending charts, search that works offline, repeating expenses and guests who are not on the app yet. Pro adds receipt scanning and the assistant, at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year (US prices, last verified August 2026).

Bringing a Splitwise group over is free. The import reads one group per file and brings expenses and payments with their dates and currencies, and [how to move a Splitwise group to EvenOut](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/move-splitwise-group-to-evenout) walks through it. EvenOut has no data export and does not convert currencies (each expense keeps its own currency, and balances stay per currency). If either matters most, SplitPro lists both, and Cospend exports CSV files.

## Spliit: no accounts, hosted at spliit.app

Spliit's README calls it "a free and open source alternative to Splitwise", and you can use the official instance at spliit.app or deploy your own, so hosting is optional here. On 6 October 2026 the repository showed 2,978 GitHub stars and 507 forks. The homepage lists no ads and no account. Donations, shown on a public Open Collective ledger, pay for the hosting, the database and receipt scanning.

It covers groups, categories, receipt images, balances, reimbursements and splits by percentage, shares or amount. The homepage also lists recurring expenses (daily, weekly or monthly) and an AI receipt scan, both marked Beta. The README lists importing from Splitwise under "Possible incoming features".

With no accounts, the link is the only key. Spliit's privacy policy says "Anyone who has the link, though, can read the group and change it." The author's own list of trade-offs adds that a new device starts empty until you reopen your links, and that there are "No notifications, no 'friends' feature, no payment integrations". On spliit.app a group cannot be deleted from inside the app, and the privacy policy says to email hello@spliit.app.

## SplitPro: built to be self-hosted

SplitPro describes itself as "An open source alternative to Splitwise". It is MIT licensed, had 1,465 stars and 199 forks on 6 October 2026, and its latest release is v2.1.5 (1 August 2026). The README says "SplitPro is for self hosting" and that the old community instance at splitpro.app "is no longer maintained". The splitpro.app homepage still reads "Split Expenses with your friends for free", so run your own copy rather than signing up there.

Its README lists these features: equal, percentage, share, exact, adjustment and settlement splits, optional group debt simplification, an activity feed with edits and deletions, currency conversion, recurring expenses, Plaid bank import and data export. Sign-in is required, through an email link, Google or OIDC (Authentik, Keycloak or your own), and username and password login is not supported. You can lock an instance down by disabling signups and invites.

Splitwise import is partial. It brings friends and groups, and the README says "Expenses themselves are not imported yet." [EvenOut vs SplitPro](https://www.evenoutapp.com/compare/splitpro) sets the hosted and self-hosted routes side by side.

## Cospend: an app inside Nextcloud

Cospend is "a group/shared budget manager" for housemates, trips or any shared expenses, built as a Nextcloud app under AGPL-3.0. Its latest release is v4.1.3, published 2 September 2026. It has no price, the maintainer asks for donations, and the README says the app is under development.

A project holds members and bills, and each member has a balance. You can ask for a settlement plan, have reimbursement bills created from it, add recurring bills by day, week, month or year, set a custom amount per member and link a photo of a receipt to a bill. Deleted bills go to a trash first, and old projects can be archived. Projects can be shared with Nextcloud users, or with people outside Nextcloud through public links that can be password protected.

Import and export use CSV files compatible with IHateMoney and Splitwise. Mobile clients are separate third-party apps.

## How do they compare on repeating bills, import and notifications?

As of October 2026, repeating bills and Splitwise import separate the projects more than anything else, and notifications follow close behind.

| App | Repeating bills | Splitwise import | Notifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | Weekly, monthly or yearly, free, with pause, resume and stop | Free CSV import of expenses and payments | Push for new expenses, payments and comments |
| Spliit | Daily, weekly or monthly (Beta) | Listed as a possible future feature | None, says the author |
| SplitPro | Yes, needs PostgreSQL with pg_cron | Friends and groups, not expenses | Push, with extra setup |
| Cospend | Day, week, month or year | CSV, compatible with Splitwise files | Nextcloud notifications and activity stream |

## How do you choose?

- **You want nothing to run.** EvenOut is hosted, and its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. The other apps in [Splitwise alternatives with no daily expense limit](https://www.evenoutapp.com/alternatives/splitwise-alternatives-with-no-expense-limit) need no server of yours either.
- **You want your Splitwise expenses carried over.** EvenOut's import is free and brings expenses and payments. Cospend reads Splitwise CSV files too, and SplitPro brings friends and groups but not expenses.
- **No sign-in and no server.** Use spliit.app, and remember that the link is the key.
- **You will run a server.** SplitPro with Docker and PostgreSQL (plus pg_cron if you want recurring expenses), or Cospend if you already run Nextcloud.

Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day as of October 2026. Before leaving, export each group you want to keep by following [how to export a Splitwise group to a spreadsheet](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/export-splitwise-data). If your friends will not create accounts, [Splitwise alternatives when friends won't sign up](https://www.evenoutapp.com/alternatives/splitwise-alternatives-no-account) compares the hosted options that need none.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I keep a self-hosted SplitPro closed to outsiders?

SplitPro's authentication guide says to set DISABLE_EMAIL_SIGNUP=true to stop email signups and ENABLE_SENDING_INVITES=false to block invite emails. You can still allow access through trusted OAuth or OIDC providers, and username and password login is not supported.

### What happens to a receipt scanned in Spliit?

On spliit.app the picture is sent to OpenAI, which reads the total, the date and a title from it. Spliit's privacy policy says OpenAI processes it on Spliit's behalf and that, under OpenAI's API terms, what is sent is not used to train its models. Titles you type are also sent to OpenAI to suggest a category. On a self-hosted copy the AI features need an OpenAI-compatible provider, so the picture goes to whichever provider you set up.

### Can I add a login to Spliit?

Not on spliit.app, where the group link is the only key. The author's blog says a self-hosted copy can sit behind a reverse proxy with OIDC, which gives you a login screen without changing the app, and that because Spliit is MIT licensed, forks exist that add full user accounts.

### How hard is each setup?

Spliit's README offers a Deploy with Vercel button, a Docker Compose file and local run steps, with PostgreSQL behind it. SplitPro uses Docker Compose and an .env file where you configure sign-in, the database and uploads. Cospend installs as an app on a Nextcloud server you already run, and its README recommends nightly builds only for test servers. EvenOut needs no setup beyond signing in with Google or email.
