Updated: 2026-10-06

As of October 2026, EvenOut holds up to 200 people in a group, has no daily expense limit and records a payment made in any way, with five split methods chosen per expense. Venmo Groups holds up to 30 people and needs a US bank account, and Splitwise's free plan stops at 4 expenses a day. One setup is to keep the balance in EvenOut and pay through Venmo.

Key points:
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and its groups hold up to 200 people. Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day, and Venmo Groups holds 30.
- Using Venmo needs a US bank account. EvenOut and Splitwise record a payment made in any way, so people can pay by bank transfer, cash or Venmo.
- EvenOut offers five split methods chosen for each expense: Equally, Exact amounts, Percent, Shares and By item. Venmo's group pages describe equal splits with editable amounts.
- All three aim for the fewest payments: four friends with 3 shared expenses can settle with 3 payments instead of 9 small debts.
- Venmo charges 3.00% to send with a credit card and 1.75% (minimum $0.25, maximum $25) for Instant Transfer out. EvenOut moves no money, so it has no transfer fees of its own.

## Is Venmo Groups a replacement for Splitwise or EvenOut?

It covers part of the job. EvenOut and Splitwise are ledgers: they keep a running balance of who owes whom, and the payment itself can happen wherever you like. Venmo Groups tracks and splits shared costs, such as a vacation or bills shared with roommates, and members pay each other inside Venmo.

Geography matters first. Venmo's User Agreement says you must be in the United States and have a U.S. bank account. EvenOut records payments and does not move money, so people can pay by bank transfer, cash or Venmo and record it afterwards. Splitwise can send a payment in the US through Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal, offers Pay by Bank in select European countries, and uses "Record a payment" everywhere else. [Does Splitwise connect to Venmo](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/does-splitwise-connect-to-venmo) walks through the US setup.

## How do the three compare at a glance?

EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit, Splitwise's stops at 4 expenses a day, and Venmo Groups holds up to 30 people. As of October 2026, the caps and costs differ most.

| App | Cap and cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | No daily expense limit and no ads; up to 200 people a group. Pro is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year and covers only receipt scanning and the assistant | Most groups: free, no daily limit, no ads, payments recorded however people pay |
| Splitwise | 4 expenses a day on the free plan; Pro removes the cap | Groups that send money through Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal in the US |
| Venmo Groups | Up to 30 people a group; $0.00 to send from a bank, balance or debit card | Groups where everyone is in the US and on Venmo |

## What does Venmo Groups do?

As of October 2026, a Venmo Group splits each expense equally among its members by default. You can change any member's amount or leave someone out, and Venmo works out the amounts so that members settle with the least number of payments.

- **Size.** A group holds up to 30 people.
- **Joining.** Venmo friends are added at once. Anyone else has to accept an invitation, and invitations lapse after 30 days.
- **Settling.** Members tap Pay in the group feed, or mark a payment made outside Venmo as paid.
- **Removing people.** You can remove a member only after they are all paid up, and the owner cannot be removed.

One purchase can be split without a group. Open it under Me, then Transactions, tap Split, pick the people (you are included unless you tap You), add any tip or surcharge, adjust the amounts and send the requests. Each person gets a charge request, and a charge request must be accepted before money moves. [Venmo Groups: how they work](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/venmo-groups) has the full walkthrough.

## What does the fewest payments look like?

Say four friends, Ava, Ben, Cal and Dee, split a ski weekend equally. Ava pays $240 for lift tickets, Ben pays $120 for groceries and Cal pays $60 for gas. Dee pays nothing. The total is $420, so each share is $105.

| Friend | Paid | Share | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ava | $240 | $105 | Owed $135 |
| Ben | $120 | $105 | Owed $15 |
| Cal | $60 | $105 | Owes $45 |
| Dee | $0 | $105 | Owes $105 |

If each expense were settled on its own, the other three friends would each owe the payer a share. That is 3 expenses with 3 debtors each, or 9 small debts. Netting every pair of friends leaves 6. Working from the balances needs only 3 payments, for example Dee pays Ava $105, Cal pays Ava $30 and Cal pays Ben $15. Ava receives $135, Ben receives $15, and Cal and Dee hand over their $45 and $105.

EvenOut's "Simplify debts" setting sits under "Settling up" in group settings, tagged "Recommended" and on by default, and any member who is not a viewer can switch it. It never changes anyone's total. Splitwise's Simplify Debts and Venmo's group math also aim for the fewest payments, and Splitwise says its version never changes anyone's total balance either, with any group member able to toggle it. [How simplify debts works](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-simplify-debts-works) shows more examples.

## What does each one cost?

EvenOut moves no money, so it has no transfer fees of its own, and its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. As of October 2026, Venmo's fees depend on how you send and how you cash out.

- **Sending** from a bank account, Venmo balance or debit card is $0.00. Sending with a credit card is 3.00%, so a $60 share paid by credit card carries a $1.80 fee.
- **Standard transfer** to your bank is $0.00.
- **Instant Transfer** costs 1.75%, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum.

The minimum and maximum bend the math at both ends, so the fee is not a flat 1.75%.

| Amount moved out with Instant Transfer | Fee |
|---|---|
| $10 | $0.25 (1.75% would be $0.18, so the minimum applies) |
| $40 | $0.70 |
| $500 | $8.75 |
| $2,000 | $25.00 (1.75% would be $35.00, so the maximum applies) |

The minimum applies below about $14.29 and the maximum above about $1,428.57. Splitwise Pay, which is for US residents aged 18 and over, uses the same 1.75% (minimum $0.25, maximum $25) for instant withdrawal to a debit card or eligible bank.

The ledger apps differ in what the free plan allows. EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and its paid Pro plan covers only receipt scanning and the assistant. Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day, and Pro removes the cap. On a day with gas, breakfast, lift tickets, lunch and dinner, the fifth expense hits the limit, and [the Splitwise daily limit](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-daily-limit) covers the workarounds.

## How do the split methods compare?

EvenOut offers five split methods, chosen for each expense: Equally, Exact amounts, Percent, Shares and By item. Venmo's group pages describe equal splits with editable amounts. Splitwise and EvenOut both offer exact amount, percentage, share and itemized splits.

Say three friends share an $840 rental and stay different numbers of nights: Lee 3, Mo 2 and Ned 2. That is 7 nights, so one share is $120, and the amounts are $360, $240 and $240. With a shares split in EvenOut you enter 3, 2 and 2 and the app does the division, showing each person's dollar share under their name. With editable amounts you do that division first and type the results.

EvenOut also splits to the cent and shares out the leftover cents, so $100 among three people comes to two shares of $33.33 and one of $33.34.

## What if a friend has not joined Splitwise or EvenOut?

Both let you track a friend's share before they join. EvenOut's "Add a guest" tracks a person's share right away, and only the person who created the guest can send the link that lets them claim it later. EvenOut groups hold up to 200 people, and a group invite link works for several people for 30 days. Splitwise lets you add a friend by email or phone and use them in expenses before they accept, and it sends one invite and one reminder and then leaves them alone. In Venmo, a person whose phone number or email is not linked to a Venmo account can claim the payment or fulfill the request by opening one.

## How do you pay with Venmo and still keep a running balance?

Pay in Venmo and record the payment in the ledger, so the balance reaches zero.

1. **Add each expense when it happens.** Enter the amount, who paid and how it is split.
2. **Open the group's balances when you are ready to settle.** EvenOut's group page lists your balance with each person ("You owe Sarah", "Noam owes you"), and tapping one starts a settle up or a reminder.
3. **Pay the person in Venmo.** Send a payment, or answer their request.
4. **Record it.** In EvenOut, tap "Settle up" and then "Record payment"; a partial payment leaves the rest owed. In Splitwise, Settle up records a payment made outside Splitwise, or sends one through Venmo in the US for USD balances.
5. **Fix a wrong amount by deleting the payment and recording it again.** EvenOut payments can be deleted and restored but not edited.

To nudge someone, EvenOut's "Remind {name}" offers "Share a message" (prefilled text with a settle-up link) or "Email via EvenOut", at most once per person per group a day. It does not send a push notification.

## Which one should you use?

For most groups, EvenOut is the one to use, with Venmo or any other way of paying on the side. Pick by the group.

- **Your group pays in different ways.** EvenOut records a payment however it was made, and its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads.
- **The group has more than 30 people.** A Venmo Group stops at 30, while an EvenOut group holds up to 200.
- **Someone is outside the US or has no US bank account.** Venmo is not an option for them, so they pay by bank transfer or cash and the payment is recorded in EvenOut.
- **Your shares are uneven.** EvenOut's Percent, Shares and By item splits do the division for you.
- **You keep reaching 4 expenses a day on Splitwise.** EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit, and moving a group takes one export and one import.

If everyone is in the US and on Venmo and you want to pay inside the same app, a Venmo Group does that and EvenOut does not move money. In the US you can also combine them: Venmo moves the money, and EvenOut keeps the balance for each group and each friend. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a weekly limit on what you can send on Venmo?

Yes. As of October 2026, an unverified personal profile has a weekly spending limit of $299.99, so a single $350 payment for a share of a cabin would exceed it. Verified profiles can send up to $60,000 a week, though payments can still be declined and Venmo can change its limits. Verification needs an SSN or ITIN. EvenOut moves no money, so it has no sending limits of its own.

### Can a friend who is not on Venmo still pay a charge request?

In EvenOut a friend can be a guest in the group, so their share is tracked before they sign up and they can pay you however you both prefer. Venmo's User Agreement says that if the phone number or email you used is not linked to a Venmo account, the person can claim the payment or fulfill the request by opening one. Money that is sent and left unclaimed for 30 days is cancelled and returned.

### Who can see Venmo payments and group activity?

Venmo has three privacy settings: Public (anyone on the internet may see it), Friends only and Private. Group activity is visible to group members whichever one you pick, and every participant sees the amount, note, names and timestamp. Past payments can only be made more private, never less. Splitwise shows an expense only to the people in it or in its group. In EvenOut, people appear by name, photo and @username, and it never shows or sends another person's email address.

### How do you move a Splitwise group to EvenOut?

Export the group from Splitwise as a spreadsheet, then open Account, Data, Import from Splitwise in EvenOut and choose the file. You get one new group per file. People are matched by name, and anyone left on Assign later becomes a guest placeholder. EvenOut rebuilds each expense so the balances match, but the original split methods and notes are not recovered. The import is free.
