EvenOut moves no money, so it adds no limit or fee, and on the free plan its Monthly repeat adds the rent each month. On a $2,400 rent split three ways, each share is $800: an unverified Venmo account has a weekly limit of $299.99, a verified one can send up to $60,000, and Zelle's limit is set by your bank (as of October 2026).

Key points:
- EvenOut moves no money, so no sending limit or fee applies to a rent share. Its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads.
- EvenOut's Monthly repeat adds the rent each month with the same payer and split, and Exact amounts covers rooms that differ.
- An $800 rent share is about 2.7 times Venmo's $299.99 weekly limit for unverified accounts. Verifying needs an SSN or ITIN, and verified accounts can send up to $60,000 a week.
- Zelle's dollar limit comes from your bank or credit union. A Zelle payment to an enrolled user cannot be cancelled, and a Zelle request can only go to an enrolled user.
- Sending $800 from a credit card on Venmo adds 3.00%, which is $24.

## How do Zelle and Venmo compare for rent?

Rent shares are large enough to run into payment limits, and that is where the two apps part ways. An $800 share is over Venmo's weekly limit until the sender has verified, and Zelle needs everyone's bank to offer it and each person to be enrolled. EvenOut moves no money, so no limit or fee applies to it. The examples below use a $2,400 apartment split three ways, which is $800 each. All figures are US dollars as of October 2026.

| For an $800 share | EvenOut | Zelle | Venmo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit | None of its own, since it moves no money | Set by your bank or credit union | $299.99 a week unverified; up to $60,000 a week verified |
| Cost to send | $0, no transfer fees | Typically $0 for consumers | $0 from balance, bank or debit card; $24 from a credit card |
| Splitting and repeating | Equally, exact amounts, percent, shares or by item; Repeat "Monthly" adds the rent each month | No bill-splitting tool described | A charge request to each person, with any amount editable |
| Asking roommates for it | A reminder shared as a message or sent as an email, at most once a day per person | Enrolled Zelle users only | A name, username, phone number or email, several people at once |
| Payment goes to someone with no account | Nothing is sent; a roommate with no account can be added as a guest by name | They have 14 days to enroll, then the money returns to you | They can claim it by opening an account, and unclaimed money returns after 30 days |

## Why does Venmo's weekly limit matter for rent?

An unverified Venmo account can spend $299.99 a week, so an $800 share is about 2.7 times the limit and cannot go through in one week. The limit covers person-to-person and authorized-merchant payments, so, say, a $40 internet payment that week uses part of it too.

Verifying raises the limit. Venmo says a verified personal account can send up to $60,000 a week, though payments can still be declined and Venmo keeps sole discretion over limits. You verify inside the Venmo app, under Me, the Settings gear and Identity Verification. It needs an SSN or ITIN, and without one it cannot be completed. Venmo may also ask you to verify when you send $300 or more in a week.

The rule for a household is simple. Either each roommate who sends a share verifies before the first of the month, or the share that cannot go through Venmo goes through Zelle.

If one roommate collects and then pays the landlord, that person's own limit matters more. Sending the full $2,400 would take just over eight weeks at the unverified limit, since eight weeks of $299.99 adds up to $2,399.92.

## What do they cost on an $800 share?

Both are typically free for a bank-funded payment. Venmo charges $0 to send from a balance, a bank account or a debit card, and 3.00% from a credit card, which is $24 on $800. Zelle says there are typically no fees for consumers. It cites a Q1 2026 survey in which 99.40% of linked consumer accounts charged no fee to send, receive or request, and it adds that you should confirm with your bank.

Cost shows up when the collector moves money out of Venmo to a bank. A standard transfer is $0 and typically takes 1 to 3 business days. An instant transfer is 1.75% with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum, so it costs $14 on $800 and is capped at $25 on $1,600. For rent due on the 1st, start the standard transfer a few business days early.

Zelle sends from a checking or savings account through your bank's app, so the number to check is your bank's send limit. For the dollar limit, Zelle says to contact your bank or credit union.

## How do you request rent from roommates?

Say Ana paid the landlord $2,400 and now collects from Ben and Carl.

- **On Zelle**, Ana enters Ben's email or US mobile number, $800 and a memo such as "November rent", then confirms, and does the same for Carl. Zelle says payment requests can only be sent to enrolled Zelle users, so both must be enrolled before Ana can ask.
- **On Venmo**, Ana taps Pay/Request, picks Ben, taps the plus icon to add Carl, taps Next, enters each amount and a note, and taps Request. Venmo splits a total evenly between the recipients and Ana, so $2,400 comes to $800 each, and she can edit any amount. A charge request must be accepted before money is sent.

If the rooms differ, edit the amounts, for example $1,000, $850 and $550, which still add up to $2,400. How to pick those numbers is covered in [how to split rent by room size](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-split-rent-by-room-size). On Venmo, requests nobody has paid sit under Me, Transactions, Pending, where Ana can delete one or send a reminder.

## What happens if you send rent to the wrong person?

A Zelle payment to an enrolled user cannot be cancelled, and Zelle's answer to whether you can reverse one is no. A single wrong digit in a phone number on an $800 payment is an $800 mistake if that number belongs to an enrolled user. Zelle's advice is to send only to people you know and trust and to double-check the email or mobile number before you confirm. The details are in [can you cancel a Zelle payment](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/can-you-cancel-a-zelle-payment).

On Venmo, a charge request must be accepted before money is sent. When you pay a roommate directly, confirm the name and username before you send.

EvenOut moves no money, so nothing sent from it can reach the wrong person, and a recorded payment can be deleted and restored.

## Who should collect, one roommate or everyone?

There are two common setups, and the money mechanics differ.

- **Everyone pays the landlord $800.** Each payment counts against that person's own limit, and nobody fronts anything. The landlord has to accept that method, so ask which one they take.
- **One roommate collects.** That person sends $2,400 and waits for Ben and Carl's $1,600 to arrive. On Zelle, their bank's limit has to cover $2,400. On Venmo, they have to be verified.

Which setup your lease allows is a question for the lease and the landlord, and this page covers only how the money moves.

## Where does EvenOut fit?

EvenOut moves no money, so it works next to either app. It keeps the record of who fronted the rent each month and who has paid back.

1. Ana adds "Rent" for $2,400, paid by her, split equally. Ben and Carl each owe $800. For rooms that differ, choose "Exact amounts" and type each share.
2. Under "Repeat", Ana picks "Monthly". EvenOut adds each later one automatically as a normal expense with the same payer and split, around 9:00 in her time zone. Setting it up needs a connection.
3. When Ben pays by Zelle or Venmo, Ana records it under "Settle up" and his $800 drops off the balance.
4. If Carl is late, "Remind Carl" shares a prefilled message or sends a friendly email. It is not a push notification, and there is at most one a day.

Percent and Shares also work for rooms that differ, and a roommate who is not on EvenOut yet can be added as a guest by name. The free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. For a message to send when rent is late, see [how to remind a roommate to pay rent](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-remind-a-roommate-to-pay-rent).

## Which should your household use?

Use EvenOut for the record of who paid the rent and who owes what, and Zelle or Venmo to carry the money. To choose between those two for the payment itself, work through these in order. The first no usually decides it.

1. **Is every roommate's bank on Zelle, and is each person enrolled?** If not, Zelle cannot carry their share or a request to them.
2. **Has each roommate verified on Venmo?** Anyone without an SSN or ITIN cannot verify, which leaves Zelle or another method for their share.
3. **Does the collector's limit cover $2,400?** Check the Zelle limit with the bank, and check Venmo verification.
4. **Does the landlord take Zelle or Venmo?** The landlord's choice settles it for the payment itself, and the roommates can still collect from each other any way they like.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does EvenOut collect or send the rent?

No. EvenOut does not move money. It records who paid the rent, who owes what and when someone has paid back, while Zelle, Venmo or a bank transfer carries the payment.

### Does the roommate who collects rent pay a fee to receive it?

Venmo charges nothing to receive a personal payment from a Venmo user. If the sender marks the payment goods and services, the receiver pays 2.99%, which is $23.92 on $800. Zelle says there are typically no fees for consumers to send or receive, and it tells you to confirm with your bank.

### What if a roommate has no Venmo account?

Money sent to a phone number or email that is not linked to a Venmo account can be claimed by opening one. If it is still unclaimed after 30 days, the payment is cancelled and returned. A request can be fulfilled the same way, by opening an account.

### What happens if I send Zelle rent to someone who has not enrolled?

They get an email or text. You can cancel the payment until they enroll, and if they do not enroll within 14 days it expires and the money returns to you. A rent due on the 1st can slip past its date that way, so check that the landlord or roommate is enrolled first.
