# EvenOut vs SplitPro: hosted app or self-hosted

Canonical URL: https://www.evenoutapp.com/compare/splitpro
Updated: 2026-10-06

EvenOut is hosted, so there is no server to run, and its free Splitwise import brings in expenses and payments. As of October 2026, SplitPro is open source software you host yourself: its README says the old community instance at splitpro.app is no longer maintained and is stuck at version 1.3.4, though that homepage still says free.

Key points:
- EvenOut is hosted: sign in with Google or email and add the first expense. Running SplitPro takes Docker Compose, an env file and a sign-in provider (as of October 2026).
- EvenOut's free CSV import brings in expenses and payments with dates and currencies. SplitPro's README says its import covers friends and groups, and expenses are not imported yet.
- Repeating expenses are free in EvenOut and ready to use, weekly, monthly or yearly. In SplitPro they need PostgreSQL with the pg_cron extension.
- SplitPro's README says splitpro.app is no longer maintained and stuck at version 1.3.4, though its homepage still says free. Treat SplitPro as self-hosted software.

## Is splitpro.app a hosted app you can sign up for?

Not a maintained one, so treat SplitPro as software you host yourself. Its README says "SplitPro is for self hosting" and that the old community instance at splitpro.app "is no longer maintained and is stuck at version 1.3.4". The splitpro.app homepage still says "Split Expenses with your friends for free" and shows no pricing, so it reads like a live service. Go by the README. EvenOut is the hosted option: you sign in with Google or email and add the first expense.

## What is SplitPro today?

SplitPro is open source under the MIT license and describes itself as an alternative to Splitwise. As of October 6, 2026 it has 1,465 GitHub stars and 199 forks, and the latest release is v2.1.5 from August 1, 2026. The README lists:

- **Splits.** Equal, percentage, share, exact, adjustment and settlement, plus negative expenses for refunds and corrections.
- **Balances.** Optional group debt simplification and detailed balances per person and per group.

## What does it take to run SplitPro?

Running it means hosting it. The README quick start has three steps.

1. Use the Docker Compose file at docker/prod/compose.yml.
2. Copy .env.example to .env and configure auth, the database and uploads.
3. Start the stack and log in to create the first account.

Setting up auth means configuring at least one sign-in provider, because username and password login is not supported. Two other details matter. Repeating expenses need PostgreSQL with the pg_cron extension, and the project publishes a prebuilt Postgres image that includes it. Receipts are kept on the server's local disk, so the uploads volume has to persist. EvenOut needs none of these steps, because it is hosted.

## How do the Splitwise imports compare?

EvenOut's import takes one Splitwise CSV per group and brings in the expenses and payments with their dates and currencies. You mark which person is you, then match the others to your friends or leave them as guest placeholders. SplitPro's import is partial. Its README says the import "supports friends and groups (partial import)" and adds "Expenses themselves are not imported yet."

Say your Splitwise group has 86 expenses and 12 payments. In EvenOut that file has 98 expense and payment rows, far under the 20,000 row limit, and the new group opens with the balances rebuilt from them. SplitPro's import covers friends and groups only in part, so you would add the 86 expenses yourself. EvenOut rebuilds each split as exact amounts that give the same balances, so the original split method, percentages and notes do not come across. [How to move a Splitwise group to EvenOut](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/move-splitwise-group-to-evenout) has the steps.

## Which one fits?

Pick EvenOut when you want to sign in and start, with no server to look after. Search, charts and repeating expenses are free, and the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. If you want to own the server and the data, or need currency conversion, data export, Plaid bank import or an activity feed that shows edits, those are outside what EvenOut does, and SplitPro's README lists them. [How to split expenses in two currencies without converting](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/split-expenses-in-multiple-currencies) shows the EvenOut routine for more than one currency.

[Open source Splitwise alternatives you can self-host](https://www.evenoutapp.com/alternatives/open-source-splitwise-alternatives) compares SplitPro with the other self-hosted options, and [apps for splitting monthly bills that repeat](https://www.evenoutapp.com/alternatives/apps-for-splitting-monthly-bills) covers the rent and subscription case.

- Repeating expenses work out of the box in EvenOut, weekly, monthly or yearly. SplitPro's need PostgreSQL with the pg_cron extension.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the limits of EvenOut's Splitwise import?

The CSV can be up to 2 MB in UTF-8, with up to 20,000 rows and 100 members. One file makes one new group, so repeat the steps for each Splitwise group. Importing the same file twice shows Already imported and opens the group you already made. Anyone you leave on Assign later becomes a guest placeholder.

### Does SplitPro send push notifications?

Its README says it supports push notifications for new expenses and updates, but delivery needs additional configuration. EvenOut sends push for new expenses, payments and comments, and you choose which kinds you get under Account, then Notifications. Quiet hours, first set to 22:00 to 08:00, hold pushes until the window ends.

### How do you sign in to SplitPro?

SplitPro always needs a sign-in. Self-hosted setups can use Google, an email magic link (which needs SMTP settings), Authentik or OIDC, and at least one provider must be configured. Its authentication notes say username and password login is not supported. EvenOut offers Google or email sign-in.

### Does EvenOut convert currencies the way SplitPro does?

No. Each EvenOut expense carries its own currency, picked from 154 currencies, and balances are kept as separate lines per currency. Nothing is converted, so each line is settled in its own currency. A group that wants every amount converted into one currency needs an app that does the conversion.
