To split the difference is to agree on the amount exactly halfway between two numbers: add them and divide by 2. Cambridge Dictionary defines it this way. A seller asking $1,200 and a buyer offering $1,000 settle on $1,100, so each side moves $100. This page covers the money meaning only.

Key points:
- Split the difference means agreeing on the amount halfway between two numbers: add them and divide by 2.
- Asking $1,200 against an offer of $1,000 settles at $1,100, so each side moves $100.
- A 50/50 split divides a total between people. Splitting the difference divides the gap between two positions, so a $60 dinner can land on $25 and $35.
- The midpoint rewards whoever opens with the more extreme number, so for a cost that repeats, agree a method first.
- In EvenOut, enter the agreed amounts under 'Exact amounts'. The status pill reads 'All assigned' when they add up to the total.

## What does split the difference mean?

To split the difference is to agree on the amount exactly halfway between two numbers. Cambridge Dictionary defines it as agreeing "on a number or amount that is exactly in the middle of the difference between two other numbers or amounts". Its example is a table: the seller wanted £50, the buyer offered £30, and they agreed to split the difference.

Dictionary.com words it as a compromise between two close figures, with the remainder divided equally: a car at $5,000 against an offer of $4,000 ends at $4,500.

## How do you work out the amount?

Add the two numbers and divide by 2. Each side moves the same distance, half the gap, toward the other.

- **A $200 gap.** Asking $1,200 against an offer of $1,000 gives ($1,200 + $1,000) ÷ 2 = $1,100. The gap is $200, and each side moves $100.
- **A $500 gap.** Each side gives up $250, whatever the two starting numbers are.

## How is it different from splitting a bill 50/50?

A 50/50 split divides one total between people, and splitting the difference divides the gap between two positions. On the same dinner they can give different answers. For the plain version of dividing a total, see [what it means to split the bill](https://www.evenoutapp.com/glossary/split-the-bill).

Say Sam paid a $60 dinner for two and wants Pat to pay half, which is $30. Pat says their share is $20, because they only had a salad. Splitting the difference between $30 and $20 gives $25. Pat pays $25 and Sam covers the remaining $35. A 50/50 split would have been $30 each.

## What happens with the cents?

When the midpoint falls between two cents, one side has to round. Say the two numbers are $1,000.00 and $1,000.01. The midpoint is $1,000.005, which cannot be paid.

Rounding up to $1,000.01 means the side that started at $1,000.00 moves a full cent and the other side moves none. Rounding down reverses it. Agree who rounds before you work out the number.

## When is splitting the difference not fair?

It rewards whoever opens with the more extreme number, because the midpoint moves with it. Say a buyer offers $1,000. A seller who opens at $1,500 lands on $1,250, and a seller who opens at $1,100 lands on $1,050. The same $1,000 offer ends $200 apart, only because of the seller's opening number.

For a cost that repeats, such as rent or a utility bill, agree a method first (by percent, by shares or by room size) and haggle once at most. A [proportional split](https://www.evenoutapp.com/glossary/proportional-split) shows the arithmetic, and the [formulas for splitting bills](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/formula-for-splitting-bills) list each method. When orders differ at a meal, see [how to split a bill unevenly](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/split-bill-unevenly).

## How do you record the agreed amounts in EvenOut?

Enter the amounts that were agreed, not the rule. On the Add expense page, tap the split chip, choose "Exact amounts" and type $35 for Sam and $25 for Pat. Until they match the $60 total, the status pill reads "$X left to assign" or "$X over the total". Once they add up it reads "All assigned".

## Frequently asked questions

### What does split the difference of 500 mean?

If 500 is the gap between the two positions, each side moves 250 toward the other. If 500 is one of the two numbers, you need the other one. Between 500 and 800 the midpoint is 650, because (500 + 800) ÷ 2 = 650. The gap is 300, so each side moves 150.

### Can you split the difference between three numbers?

The definition covers two numbers. With three positions you take an average instead, which is a different calculation. Positions of $20, $30 and $45 add up to $95, and $95 ÷ 3 rounds to $31.67.

### Does splitting the difference work when the two numbers are far apart?

Dictionary.com defines it for two close figures. The arithmetic still works on any two numbers, but the midpoint between $3,000 and $500 is $1,750, which is $1,250 from each starting point and may suit neither side.
