EvenOut adds your friends and guests straight from the group's settings, and a guest can be added by name alone. On Splitwise you cannot join a group on your own: a member invites you by email, phone or an invite link, from Add people to group on mobile or Add a person on the web, as of October 2026.

Key points:
- EvenOut adds your own friends and guests directly from the group's settings, and one invite link per group, good for 30 days, lets everyone else join.
- A guest who is not on EvenOut yet is added by name with no email or phone, their share is tracked now, and you can invite them to claim it later.
- Splitwise says you cannot join a group on your own. A member invites you by email, phone or an Invite via link, as of October 2026.
- On Splitwise mobile the path is Groups tab, the group, the gear icon, Add people to group. On the web it is the gear icon, Edit group settings, Add a person.
- A Splitwise friend invited by email or phone can be added to expenses before they accept, and Splitwise keeps allowing it.

## Can you join a Splitwise group on your own?

No. As of October 2026, Splitwise's help center says you cannot join a group on your own. Someone who is already in the group has to invite you by email, by phone, or with an "Invite via link". If you are the one waiting to get in, ask a member to send the invite, and have an account of your own ready, since registration asks for a name, an email, a phone number and a password.

## How do you add someone to a Splitwise group?

Open the group's settings and use the add-person option. The labels differ between mobile and web.

On mobile:

1. Go to the Groups tab and tap the group.
2. Tap the gear icon, which opens the group's settings.
3. Tap "Add people to group" and add the person.

On the web:

1. Pick the group in the left-hand sidebar.
2. Click the gear icon at the top of the page and choose "Edit group settings".
3. Click "Add a person".

## What can you do before the person accepts?

You can start adding them to expenses right away. For a friend invited by email or phone, Splitwise lets you include them in expenses before they accept, and it keeps letting you do so for as long as you like. Splitwise sends one invite and one reminder, then leaves them alone.

Say four of you share a cabin weekend and you add a fifth person, Dana, by email on Friday. On Saturday you buy $90 of supplies and split it five ways, so Dana owes $18 before she has opened the invite. If she never opens it, the $18 stays on her line until someone records a payment.

## Who can see the group once someone is added?

Everyone in it, including the new member. Splitwise says you see an expense if you are in it or in its group, and that anyone involved in an expense or its group can view, edit or delete it. It also says it has no group admins or special permissions.

So add people you are comfortable showing the group's expenses to. In EvenOut the owner can choose who edits ("Everyone" or "Only their own") and can make a person a Viewer, who sees everything and can comment but cannot add or change expenses. On Splitwise, an expense outside any group is visible only to the people involved in it, so a one-off cost with a single friend stays between the two of you.

## How does EvenOut handle adding people?

EvenOut adds people you already know directly and lets anyone else start as a guest. Your own friends and guests are added from the group's settings (Members, then Add people). Everyone else joins through one link for the whole group, and a person with no email or phone can be added by name right away.

| | EvenOut | Splitwise, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| From the group's settings | Members, then "Add people": your own friends or guests, added directly | "Add people to group" (mobile) or "Add a person" (web), with their email or phone |
| By link | "Invite with a link": one link per group, works for several people, lasts 30 days | "Invite via link" |
| Someone with no email or phone | "Add a guest": a name is enough | A name-only placeholder friend can be added from the web app |
| Before they join | A guest's share is tracked now, and the guest can claim it later with a single-use link | Invited people can be added to expenses before they accept |
| Who can change expenses | The owner picks "Everyone" or "Only their own", and a Viewer can follow and comment only | No group admins or special permissions; anyone involved can edit or delete an expense |

The EvenOut link stops working when the owner removes someone from the group, and a group holds up to 200 people. Invites need a connection. For a friend with no account who you only want to track by name, EvenOut's version is "Add a guest", and the [Splitwise guide to adding a friend without their email](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/add-a-friend-to-splitwise-without-email) covers the placeholder route on Splitwise.

## What to do next

If you are setting up a group from scratch, EvenOut has one invite link for the whole group, and anyone who has not signed up yet can be added as a guest by name, so nobody needs an email or phone to be included. A group already on Splitwise can move over with [the free CSV import](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/move-splitwise-group-to-evenout), and EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit, where Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.

If you are staying on Splitwise, start from the group's settings and invite by email or phone so the person can be included in expenses at once. If a member needs to leave or be removed, [how to remove someone from a Splitwise group](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/remove-someone-from-a-splitwise-group) covers what blocks it, and [how Splitwise works](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-does-splitwise-work) walks through a group from the first expense to settling up.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a Splitwise account to be added to a group?

To use the group yourself, yes. Splitwise says you will need to create an account, and registration asks for a name, an email, a phone number and a password, with email required. Someone else can add you to expenses by email or phone before you have one.

### What if a friend I invited never accepts?

Their share is still tracked, because Splitwise keeps letting you add an invited friend to expenses. Splitwise sends one invite and one reminder and then leaves them alone, so tell them their running amount yourself now and then, and record the payment when they pay you. In EvenOut, a guest's share is tracked from the first expense, and the guest can claim it later with a single-use link that lasts 7 days.

### How many people can an EvenOut group hold?

Up to 200 people. Viewers can follow along and comment but cannot add people or share the invite link.
