To request money on Venmo, tap Pay/Request, search for the person by name, username, phone number or email, enter an amount and a note, and tap Request. To ask several people at once, tap the plus icon and add each one. The total splits evenly between them and you, and you can edit the amounts. Charge requests must be accepted before money moves.

Key points:
- Tap Pay/Request, find the person by name, username, phone or email, add an amount and a note, then tap Request. On the web, use Pay or Request in the sidebar.
- For several people, tap the plus icon to add each one. The total splits evenly between them and you, the same note shows to everyone, and amounts can be edited.
- A charge request must be accepted before money is sent. Requests nobody has paid yet sit under Me, Transactions, Pending, where you can remind the person.
- As of October 2026, receiving a personal payment from a Venmo user costs $0. It costs 2.99% if the sender marks the payment as goods and services.

## How do you request money on Venmo from one person?

Venmo calls it a charge request, and you can send one to anyone you can find by name, Venmo username, phone number or email.

1. **Open Pay/Request.** On the web, click Pay or Request in the sidebar.
2. **Find the person.** Search by name, Venmo username, phone number or email.
3. **Enter the amount and a note.** Say what it was for, such as "Theater tickets, Friday".
4. **Tap Request.** The person gets the request and chooses whether to pay it.

The same Pay/Request screen can send money as well as ask for it, so check that the button you tap says Request.

Say you bought two theater tickets for $64 and your friend owes you half. You request $32 with the note "Theater tickets, Friday". The note is what they read when they decide to pay, so put the reason and the day in it. Who else can see the payment depends on your privacy setting, which [how to make Venmo private](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-make-venmo-private) covers.

## How do you request money from several people at once?

Add every person to the same request and Venmo divides the total evenly between them and you. Say you paid $186 for a rental car that four people shared. Evenly, that is $46.50 each.

1. Tap Pay/Request and pick the first person.
2. Tap the plus icon and add the others.
3. Tap Next.
4. Enter each person's amount and a note. The same note shows to everyone.
5. Tap Request.

You can edit any amount or remove someone before you send. If one friend only rode for part of the trip, the requests could be $55, $55 and $30. That is $140 in requests, and the other $46 is your own share, which brings the total back to $186. Add the amounts up before you tap Request, because Venmo cannot know what a fair split is for your trip.

Venmo also has a Split button that starts from a purchase already in your transactions, and Groups for costs that keep coming. [How to split a bill on Venmo](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-split-a-bill-on-venmo) covers both.

## What happens after you send the request?

The person has to accept before any money moves. Venmo's User Agreement says, "Charge requests must be accepted before money is sent." If the phone number or email you used is not linked to a Venmo account, the recipient "can claim the payment or fulfill the request by opening a Venmo account." A friend who has never used Venmo can still pay you, but they open an account first.

Requests nobody has paid yet sit under Me, Transactions, Pending. From that list you can delete a request or remind the person, and a reminder sends them a new notification. It is where to look when you want to know who still owes you.

## Do you use Pay or Request to settle a shared bill?

It depends on who covered it. If you paid the bill, you request. If someone else paid, you pay them.

Say Maya covered $90 of groceries for the three of you, so your share is $30. You send Maya $30 with Pay, and you request nothing. If you had covered the groceries, you would send Maya and the third person a request for $30 each instead.

## What does it cost to get paid this way?

As of October 2026, Venmo's fee page lists receiving a personal payment from a Venmo user at $0.00. If the sender marks the payment as goods and services, the fee is 2.99%, which is $2.99 on $100. Account setup and monthly fees are $0.00.

Moving the money from your Venmo balance to your bank is a separate step. A standard transfer to a linked bank costs $0.00 and typically takes 1 to 3 business days. [Venmo fees](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/venmo-fees) lists the rest, including instant transfers.

## When is a request the wrong tool?

A request covers one amount at a time. If you and a friend trade small costs all month, you would send a new request for each one, and your friend has to accept each separately.

EvenOut keeps a running balance with each friend, so you log each cost as it happens and send a single Venmo request for the net amount at the end. Say you spend $26, $38.50 and $15 on shared things and split each equally. Your friend owes $39.75 in total, and that is one request instead of three. EvenOut records the settle-up and does not move money, so the payment itself still goes through Venmo.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I request more than $299.99 on Venmo?

As of October 2026, $299.99 is the weekly spending limit on an unverified personal account, and it covers person-to-person payments. That makes it a limit for the person paying, so a friend paying a larger request from an unverified account may run into it. A verified account can send up to $60,000 a week, though payments can still be declined and Venmo keeps sole discretion to apply and change limits.

### Do you need a US bank account to request money on Venmo?

Yes. Venmo's User Agreement, effective August 24, 2026, says you must be in the United States and have a US bank account to use Venmo. That applies to the person asking and, to pay in Venmo, to the person paying.

### Who can see the payment after someone pays my request?

Both people see the amount, note, names and time. Who else sees it depends on the privacy setting: Public (anyone on the internet), Friends only (your friends and the other person's friends) or Private (only your Me tab feed and the other person). You can change the setting under Me, Settings, Privacy, and past payments can only be made more private.

### Does EvenOut send a Venmo request for me?

No. EvenOut does not move money and does not link to Venmo. You work out who owes what in EvenOut, send the request in Venmo, then record the payment under Settle up so the balance goes down.
