# How to split a bill on Venmo with Split and Groups

Updated: 2026-10-06

On Venmo you can split a bill three ways. Open a purchase under Me, Transactions, tap Split, choose the people and send requests. Or send one request to several people, which divides the total evenly with you. Or use Venmo Groups, which hold up to 30 people. In each case you can edit the amounts by hand.

Key points:
- Split starts from a purchase in Me, Transactions. You are included unless you tap You, and Send Requests sends a charge request to each person.
- A multi-person request divides the total evenly between the recipients and you, and the same note shows to everyone.
- Venmo Groups hold up to 30 people, split equally by default, and work out settling with the least number of payments.
- To split unevenly on Venmo, you work out each person's amount yourself and type it in, whether you use Split, a multi-person request or a Group.

## What are the ways to split a bill on Venmo?

There are three, and each starts in a different place. As of October 2026, Venmo offers all three.

| Route | Where you start | How the amounts are set |
|---|---|---|
| Split | A purchase under Me, Transactions | You adjust the amounts, then Venmo sends the requests |
| Multi-person request | Pay/Request, then the plus icon | Divided evenly between the recipients and you, editable |
| Venmo Groups | A group of up to 30 people | Equal by default, editable, settled with the least number of payments |

## How do you use the Split button?

Split works on a purchase that is already in your transactions, and it sends a charge request to each person you pick.

1. **Open Me, then Transactions.**
2. **Pick the purchase** you paid for.
3. **Tap Split.**
4. **Choose the people.** You are included in the split unless you tap You.
5. **Add tips or surcharges** if the purchase needs them. This step is optional.
6. **Adjust the amounts,** then tap Next.
7. **Enter a note,** then tap Review Requests.
8. **Check the details and tap Send Requests.**

Say you paid a $96 dinner for four people. Evenly, that is $24 each. Jo ordered an extra $12 appetizer, so take it out first. The shared part is $96 minus $12, which is $84, and $84 divided by 4 is $21. Jo owes $21 plus $12, which is $33.

In the adjust step, set Jo to $33 and the other two friends to $21. Your own $21 is not requested. Check the total: $33 plus $21 plus $21 plus $21 is $96.

## How do you split with a multi-person request?

Use this when there is no purchase to split from, for example cash you handed over. Tap Pay/Request, pick the first person, tap the plus icon and add the others. Enter each person's amount and a note, then tap Request.

The total is divided evenly between the recipients and you, the same note shows to everyone, and you can edit amounts or remove people before you send. [How to request money on Venmo](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-request-money-on-venmo) has the full steps and what happens after.

## How do Venmo Groups split bills?

Groups are for costs that keep coming, such as a vacation with friends or bills shared with roommates. A Group holds up to 30 people. Members add expenses, which split into equal amounts by default, and you can adjust any member's amount or exclude someone.

Venmo says it does the math automatically so each member can settle up what they owe with the least number of payments. Venmo friends are added right away. Anyone else has to accept, and their invite expires after 30 days. You can remove only members who are all paid up, and never the owner.

To settle, tap Pay in the group feed, or mark a payment you made outside Venmo as paid. [Venmo Groups](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/venmo-groups) covers the rules in more detail.

## What is Amex Send & Split?

It is a separate way to split a card charge. Eligible U.S. Basic Consumer Card Members can split a charge with up to 20 contacts who have Venmo accounts, and there is no fee to split. It is limited to those cardholders, so most people will use one of the three routes above.

## What if the split is not equal?

In Split, in a multi-person request and in a Group, you adjust amounts by hand. For anything other than equal shares, such as a percentage, shares or items, you can work out each person's amount yourself and type it in. That is what the $33 and $21 above were.

EvenOut sets the split for each expense: Equally, Exact amounts, Percent, Shares or By item. For the dinner above, By item lets you add the $12 appetizer with a chip for Jo and the shared $84 with a chip for everyone, and it checks that the items add up to the $96 total. EvenOut records the settle-up and does not move money, so you can still pay through Venmo. [Venmo vs Splitwise vs EvenOut](https://www.evenoutapp.com/alternatives/venmo-vs-splitwise-vs-evenout) compares paying with tracking.

Once the requests are out, each person has to accept before money moves. [Venmo fees](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/venmo-fees) covers what getting paid costs.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I split a bill with someone who is not on Venmo?

For a plain request, yes. If the phone number or email is not linked to a Venmo account, the recipient can fulfill the request by opening one. Amex Send & Split works only with contacts who have Venmo accounts.

### Does splitting a bill on Venmo cost anything?

As of October 2026, sending is $0.00 from a balance, debit card or bank account, and 3.00% from a credit card. Receiving a personal payment is $0.00, or 2.99% if the sender marks it as goods and services. Amex Send & Split charges no fee to split.

### What if a friend pays me in cash instead?

In a Venmo Group you can mark a payment as settled outside Venmo. For a single charge request, you can delete it from Me, Transactions, Pending, which is the same list where you can remind someone who has not paid.

### Does EvenOut split the bill through Venmo?

No. EvenOut does not move money and does not link to Venmo. It works out each person's share and keeps the balance, you pay through Venmo or any other way, then you record the payment under Settle up.
