# Is Splitwise free? What you get and where the cap is

Yes, with a cap. As of October 2026, free Splitwise accounts can add up to 4 expenses each day, and Splitwise Pro removes the limit. EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and it includes charts and search, which Splitwise lists as Pro.

Key points:
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.
- Charts and search are free in EvenOut. Splitwise lists both, with currency conversion and default splits, on its Pro list.
- EvenOut's only paid features are receipt scanning and the assistant. Splitwise's Pro page lists ten items, from limit removal to early access.
- A Splitwise group moves to EvenOut for free: export it as a spreadsheet, then use Import from Splitwise.
- Splitwise's free plan covers groups, friends, unequal splits, recurring expenses and offline mode, with up to 4 expenses a day.

## Is Splitwise still free?

Yes. Splitwise still has a free plan, and its home page still describes the app as free. What changed is that Splitwise introduced a daily expense limit for its free tier: as of October 2026, free users can add up to 4 expenses each day, and a Pro subscription removes the limit.

So "not free anymore" is half right. The core features on its home page are free, and the number of expenses you can log in a day now has a ceiling.

## What does the free plan include?

Splitwise's home page lists 14 core features. Grouped by what you use them for:

- **Splitting:** equal or unequal splits, percentages or shares, splitting expenses and recording debts, and simplify debts.
- **People:** groups and friends, and total balances.
- **Always available:** offline mode, cloud sync and recurring expenses.
- **Tracking:** spending totals and categories.
- **Reach:** 7+ languages, 100+ currencies and payment integrations.

## What needs Pro?

Splitwise's Pro page has ten items: removing the daily limit, transaction import (listed as currently US only), currency conversion, receipt scanning, itemization, charts and graphs, expense search, default splits, an ad-free experience and early access to new features. Only Pro subscribers can convert currency or scan and itemize receipts, but everyone in the group sees the result. The yearly plans also include one annual Trip Pass. Applied to a trip group, it grants Pro features to the group's members for 30 days.

A JSON backup of your account is Pro as well. [The full Pro feature breakdown](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-pro-features) shows which Splitwise page labels each item.

## Which features are not labelled Pro?

Three features that sound like extras carry no Pro label in Splitwise's help center:

- **Spreadsheet export.** Exporting a friend or a group works on web and mobile and carries no Pro label ([how to export a Splitwise group](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/export-splitwise-data) has the steps).
- **Recurring expenses.** Weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly, with an optional email reminder, and no Pro label. [Setting up Splitwise recurring expenses](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-recurring-expenses) has the steps.
- **Balance reminders.** The "Remind..." option for a friend is documented without a Pro label.

Charts and search go the other way: Splitwise lists both as Pro, and EvenOut includes both on its free plan.

## When does the 4 a day cap actually matter?

Only on days when you log a lot. The cap is per day, so what counts is your busiest day, not your monthly total. Here are three hypothetical groups:

| Situation | Expenses on the busiest day | EvenOut free plan | Splitwise free plan, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roommates log rent, power and internet on the 1st | 3 | All 3 added | All 3 added |
| A couple logs groceries, two coffee runs, dinner and a taxi on a city day | 5 | All 5 added, no daily limit | 4 added, 1 over the cap |
| Five friends away for a weekend log 9 expenses on Saturday | 9 | All 9 added, no daily limit | 4 added, 5 over the cap |

A weekend with 5 expenses on Friday, 9 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday is over Splitwise's cap on two days: 1 over on Friday and 5 over on Saturday, 6 expenses in all. In EvenOut all 17 go in on the day they happen. On Splitwise you can add those 6 after the reset, ask a friend to add them as paid by you, or subscribe. [The daily limit guide](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-daily-limit) lists the workarounds in detail.

## What does Splitwise charge for?

Splitwise's paid plan is Splitwise Pro. It comes as an annual plan for one person, an annual plan for two, or a monthly plan, and the price varies by country, date and promotion, so check [what Splitwise Pro costs](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-pro-cost-and-plans) before you pay.

## How does EvenOut's free plan compare?

EvenOut has no daily expense limit on its free plan and no ads, and it includes charts and search, which Splitwise lists as Pro.

| What you get | EvenOut free plan | Splitwise free plan, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Daily expense limit | None | Up to 4 expenses a day |
| Ads | No ads | Ad-free experience is on the Pro list |
| Spending charts | Free, per group or friend, by category and over time | On the Pro list |
| Expense search | Free, works offline | On the Pro list |
| Recurring expenses | Free, added automatically | Free |
| Paid features | Receipt scanning and the assistant | Ten items on the Pro list, from limit removal to early access |

EvenOut also imports a Splitwise CSV export into a new group for free, so [moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/move-splitwise-group-to-evenout) takes one export file. EvenOut does not convert currencies or export data, so if you need either, that is outside what it does. The [comparison with Splitwise](https://www.evenoutapp.com/compare/splitwise) shows the rest.

## What should you do next?

Count how many expenses you log on your busiest day. If it is more than 4, EvenOut's free plan has no daily limit to hit, and the import brings the group's expenses and payments with it. If it is 4 or fewer, no ads, charts and search are what separate the two free plans, and EvenOut includes all three. For a typical group of roommates, friends or a couple, that makes EvenOut's free plan the one to start with.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a way to lift the cap without paying for Pro?

Splitwise lists three routes. Wait until the daily limit resets, ask a friend to add the expense as paid by you, or subscribe. The US-only Splitwise Card also says it removes the expense cap with no Pro subscription required.

### Is there a free month of Splitwise Pro?

Splitwise runs a separate promotion that gives new Pro subscribers one free month through an influencer's link or code, valid for 90 days from the post. Its terms say that if you have not cancelled, you are charged the standard recurring fee starting at the end of the free month.

### Why did Splitwise add a limit to the free plan?

Splitwise says it avoids "selling data to marketers, or blanketing our apps with spammy ads" and relies on subscriptions to stay "financially sustainable". Its help article presents the daily expense limit as part of that.

### Does Splitwise Pro remove ads?

Splitwise's Pro page says 'No limits and no ads'. Its Terms say Pro 'may include... reduced advertisements'. EvenOut shows no ads on any plan.
