Splitwise says Splitwise Pay money is held at its partner bank, Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC, and that it verifies your identity before the wallet turns on. Its terms also say a payment cannot be cancelled once the bank transfer begins, and they warn about scams such as the accidental payment scam. Read what is covered and what is not before you link a bank account.

Key points:
- Splitwise is not a bank. The wallet is held at Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC, and FDIC insurance covers only the failure of an FDIC-insured bank.
- Turning on Splitwise Pay needs a verified phone number, legal name, home address, date of birth and Social Security number.
- Tell Splitwise about unauthorized use within 2 business days and the terms cap your loss at $50. After that it could reach $500.
- A pending payment can be cancelled from the wallet. Deleting the payment record in a group does not stop the bank transfer.
- Splitwise's terms warn that fraudulent transactions may mean lost funds with no recourse, including the accidental payment scam.

## Who holds the money in Splitwise Pay?

Splitwise calls itself "a technology company" that "is not a bank or money transmitter". The banking and payment services come from its partner bank, Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC. In the terms' words, the Splitwise Pay wallet is "a non-interest bearing demand deposit account with balances held at our partner bank".

Splitwise's own Pay page says what the FDIC label does and does not cover: "FDIC insurance only covers the failure of an FDIC-insured bank", and pass-through insurance is available at its partner banks "if certain conditions have been met". The label names the bank, and Splitwise ties insurance to those conditions being met.

## What does Splitwise check before it turns Pay on?

Splitwise asks for a verified phone number, legal name, home address, date of birth and Social Security number. It says federal law requires it and its bank partners to verify customers before they enable Splitwise Pay, and that the check also protects you by making sure it is really you.

Access is subject to approval by Splitwise and Coastal Community Bank, and the account may sit in a pending state for 1 to 2 business days while that happens. You must be at least 18, live in the US or its territories, and have a Splitwise account in good standing. The terms also bar anyone whose Splitwise account was previously closed for violating its terms.

## How does Splitwise Pay connect to your bank account?

Splitwise lists two ways to link a bank account: instantly with your online login credentials, or in 1 to 2 business days with a series of micro deposits. Only an individual checking account in your own name works, and a joint account that includes you is accepted and may need a bank statement. Splitwise's article on account types does not recommend savings accounts, and its funding source article lists them as unsupported.

For the login route, the terms say Splitwise works with third-party services including Plaid Technologies and Astra. They "securely store, pursuant to industry standards and applicable law" the bank credentials or debit card details you provide. Your authorization stays in effect until you tell Splitwise you want to revoke it, and you can change or update your linked accounts at any time from the wallet. Changing an account does not affect payments you already made or received.

## What happens if something goes wrong?

The terms set out a dispute process and a cap on your loss, with deadlines that matter:

- **Report within 60 days.** Tell Splitwise about an error or unauthorized transaction within 60 days of when it first appeared on your statement.
- **Where to report.** Email cardsupport@splitwise.com, call +1-877-775-8085, or tap "Dispute" on the Transaction Details screen. Splitwise says it will give you a status update within 10 business days.
- **How long it can take.** An investigation can run up to 45 calendar days for ACH transactions, and up to 90 for new accounts, point-of-sale and foreign-initiated transactions.
- **Your loss is capped by speed.** Tell Splitwise within 2 business days of learning your wallet credentials were used without permission and you can lose no more than $50. After 2 business days the terms say you could lose as much as $500, if Splitwise can show it could have stopped the use had you told it in time.

Say $800 leaves your wallet without your say-so. Reporting it within 2 business days of finding out limits your loss to $50. Reporting it later could leave you out up to $500. Past 60 days, the terms say you may not get back value lost after that point.

## What cannot be undone?

Splitwise's terms are plain that some things cannot be reversed:

- **A payment that has started processing.** Splitwise says its ability to stop or cancel depends on how the payment was started and whether processing has begun. A pending payment can be cancelled from the wallet by the sender: tap the wallet icon, tap the payment, tap "Cancel payment". If that option is missing, the payment has gone too far to stop.
- **A cancelled payment that already pulled money.** Splitwise starts the bank transfer shortly after you tap send. Cancel outside the grace period and the funds still move, taking up to 3 to 5 business days to transfer and 1 to 3 days to come back.
- **Deleting a record.** Removing a payment record from a group or friendship does not cancel the bank transaction. [Undoing a settle up](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/undo-settle-up-in-splitwise) covers the same point.
- **A misdirected payment.** You are responsible for confirming the email address or phone number you send to. Splitwise is not required to stop, cancel or recover funds from a misdirected payment, and a payment nobody claims within 14 days is cancelled automatically.
- **A scam payment.** The terms warn that fraudulent transactions may result in the loss of funds with no recourse. They name the accidental payment scam, where someone sends you a fraudulent payment, says it was an accident and asks for the money back.

Splitwise can also freeze or delay payments it reviews, and it can recover a failed payment from either the sender or the recipient. If your bank cannot cover a payment, the terms say you may be held liable for it.

## How can you use Splitwise Pay more carefully?

These steps follow from the terms and help articles above:

1. **Check the recipient.** Confirm the email address or phone number before you send, because recovery of a misdirected payment is not promised.
2. **Keep the account funded.** Leave enough in the linked checking account to cover each payment, so a failed transfer does not come back to you.
3. **Cancel in the wallet.** If you change your mind, cancel the pending payment there, not by deleting the record in the group.
4. **Treat an "accidental" payment as a warning.** If someone you did not expect sends money and asks for it back, that matches the scam Splitwise describes.
5. **Report fast.** Unauthorized activity goes to payments.help@splitwise.com or cardsupport@splitwise.com, and the 2 business day mark is the one to beat.

EvenOut does not move money or hold a wallet, so there is no bank account to link and no wallet balance to protect. "Settle up" records a payment you already made some other way, and a recorded payment can be deleted and restored.

## Frequently asked questions

Splitwise's terms say it works with third-party services including Plaid Technologies and Astra, which securely store the bank login or debit card details you provide. As of October 2026, standard electronic transfers and the monthly fee are $0.00. An instant withdrawal costs 1.75% with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum, and a replacement physical card costs $5.00. Splitwise says your own bank may add fees it does not control.
