# Is Splitwise good for couples? Limits, Duo plan, setup

Splitwise works for couples, with one limit to know. As of October 2026, free accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day, which a couple logging groceries, coffee and fuel can reach quickly. Pro removes the cap, and the Duo + Trip Pass covers two people. EvenOut has no daily expense limit on its free plan.

Key points:
- Free Splitwise accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day. The Duo + Trip Pass is an annual plan for two people, and the buyer adds the second person.
- Simplify Debts has nothing to rearrange between two people. It starts to matter from three.
- A spreadsheet export of a friend's expenses is not labelled Pro. Currency conversion and receipt scanning are on the Pro list.
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit, and charts, search and recurring expenses are free.

## Is Splitwise good for couples?

Yes for keeping track of who paid what, with one catch: as of October 2026, free accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day. The free tier covers what a couple needs most: equal and unequal splits, percentages and shares, recurring expenses, offline mode, categories and balances that update the moment you save an expense. The daily cap and the Pro list decide the rest.

## How does the 4 expenses a day limit affect a couple?

A couple that logs small, frequent purchases can reach the cap in a single day. Say one of you logs a Saturday of groceries, a coffee run, lunch, fuel and a pharmacy trip. That is 5 expenses, one more than the free plan allows.

Splitwise names three ways through. You can add more "as soon as the daily limit resets", ask a friend to add the expense as paid by you, or subscribe to Pro. For two people the second option is natural, because your partner can add the purchase as paid by you. The [daily limit guide](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-daily-limit) covers all of the options.

## What does the Duo plan cover?

Splitwise's Duo + Trip Pass is billed once a year and can be used by two people. After you subscribe, you add the second person, and both of you get Pro features. The other two plans, Individual + Trip Pass and the Monthly subscription, are each for one person, and every plan includes all Pro features.

Splitwise's Terms say the price "may vary due to date of subscription, country, local taxes and regulations, promotions", so the amount on the purchase screen is the one that counts. [The Splitwise Pro plans guide](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-pro-cost-and-plans) covers how to compare them.

Two details help a couple decide. Each yearly plan includes one annual Trip Pass, which can go to any trip group and gives its members Pro features for 30 days, useful for a holiday with friends. And because the results of scanning and currency conversion are visible to everyone in the group, one subscriber can cover what both of you see.

## Should a couple use a friend ledger or a two-person group?

Either works. Splitwise has both: expenses with one friend sit between the two of you, and a group has its own member list. A group is the better pick if you will add a third person or want a Trip Pass applied, since a pass goes to a trip group.

Simplify Debts matters less for two. It restructures who owes whom to cut the number of payments, and it never changes anyone's total. Between two people there is a single balance, so there is nothing to rearrange. It starts to matter at three, such as a couple and a roommate sharing a house.

## How do you set up Splitwise as a couple?

1. **Add your partner as a friend.** Invite them by email or phone.
2. **Add the first expense.** Tap "Add expense", enter a description and the amount, and choose who paid. The split is equal by default.
3. **Change the split when incomes differ.** Tap "equally" in the line "Paid by [you] and split [equally]", then "More options". The choices include exact amounts, percentages and shares.
4. **Repeat the fixed costs.** When you create the expense, tap the calendar icon or the date field and choose weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly. It repeats until you stop it. Recurring expenses are on Splitwise's free list.
5. **Settle up.** Tap "Settle up" to pay your partner back or record that you were paid.
6. **Export a record.** A spreadsheet of a friend's expenses is available on web and mobile and is not labelled Pro. On the web, open the friend, select the gear icon and choose "Export Spreadsheet". A JSON backup of the whole account is for Pro subscribers only.

## What about a joint account?

Splitwise tracks who paid and who owes. If the rent and utilities already leave a joint account, there is nothing between the two of you to split on those, so you log only the shared costs one of you pays from a personal account. [Joint account versus separate accounts](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/joint-account-vs-separate-accounts) goes through when each setup fits, and [whether couples should split bills 50/50](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/should-couples-split-bills-50-50) covers the ratio.

## What changes if you use EvenOut?

EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, so the 5 expenses on a Saturday are not a problem. These parts of a couple's setup are free in EvenOut, and Splitwise lists the first under Pro:

- **Charts and search.** Spending charts for a friend or group, by category and over time, and search by name, category or amount. Splitwise lists both under Pro.
- **Recurring expenses.** Weekly, monthly or yearly, from "Repeat" in "Photo, repeat, pending or note".
- **A percent split.** "By percent" is chosen per expense, so a 60/40 share and a 50/50 dinner can sit in the same ledger.
- **A running balance with each friend.** The friend page shows "Where it comes from" when a balance is built from more than one place.

Receipt scanning and the assistant are EvenOut's only paid features, at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Splitwise is ahead on currency conversion (a Pro feature) and on exporting a friend's expenses as a spreadsheet, and EvenOut has neither. In the US, Splitwise can also send the payment through Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal, while EvenOut's "Settle up" only records a payment and never moves money.

If your history is already in Splitwise, "Import from Splitwise" under Account, then Data, builds a new EvenOut group from the spreadsheet export of a Splitwise group, for free. The import keeps each expense's currency and rebuilds the balances, but it does not recover the original split methods, percentages or notes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can my partner be on Splitwise without an account?

Yes. A friend invited by email or phone can be added to expenses before accepting, with no time limit, and Splitwise sends one invite and one reminder and then leaves them alone. From the web app you can also add a name-only placeholder friend and attach an email or phone number later.

### Can either of us edit or delete the other's expenses?

Yes. Splitwise says it has no group admins or special permissions, and anyone involved in an expense or its group can view, edit or delete it. For most couples that is fine, and it means neither of you can lock the other out of changing an entry.

### Do both partners need Pro to scan receipts?

No. Splitwise says only Pro subscribers can convert currency or scan and itemize receipts, but everyone in the group sees the results. One subscriber who scans the receipts covers what both of you see.

### Does Splitwise move the money between us?

It can, in some places. In the US, Settle up can use Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal. In select European countries it offers Pay by Bank. Elsewhere you use Record a payment, which only notes that you paid.
