Name a Splitwise group for what the money is for plus a place or a date: Lisbon May 2027, 14 Maple St Bills, Date Nights or Friday Poker Pot. Short names are easy to tell apart in a list, and a year keeps this summer's trip from blending into last summer's. Funny names work if every member still knows which group is which.

Key points:
- A good name says what the money is for and, for trips and events, adds a place or a date, such as Lisbon May 2027.
- Roommate groups work best named for the address or the bill type, such as 14 Maple St Bills or Apt 4B Rent.
- Add the year to anything that repeats, so Cabin Weekend 2026 and Cabin Weekend 2027 stay separate.
- Test a funny name by asking whether a new member could tell what the group is for from the name alone.

## How should you name a Splitwise group?

Name it for what the money is for, then add a place or a date. A group is created from the Groups tab on mobile, where a button at the bottom of the screen or in the top right corner adds a new one, or on the web by clicking your name in the upper right-hand corner and then "Create a group". The name you type is what every member sees, so it has to make sense to someone who was not in the room when you made it.

Four habits cover most cases. Say what the money is for. Add a place or a date to a group that has an end. Keep it short enough to read at a glance. Leave out the list of people, since members change.

| Situation | Pattern | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Trip | Place and month | Lisbon May 2027, Tahoe Ski Week |
| Weekend away | Where and the year | Cabin Weekend 2027 |
| Shared home | Address or unit, then the bill | 14 Maple St Bills, Apt 4B Rent |
| Couple | What the money is for | Date Nights, Household |
| Friends | The activity and how often | Friday Dinner Club |
| Gift | Whose gift and the occasion | Dana's 30th Gift |

## What are good names for trips and events?

Put the place first, because it is the part people recognise. Beyond the table, these work:

- Road trip: Route 66 Road Trip, Coast Drive July
- Beach or cabin: Outer Banks Week, Lake House June
- Big events: Sam and Priya Wedding, Reunion 2027
- Bachelor or bachelorette parties: Nashville Bach Trip, Miami Weekend
- Day trips: Zoo Day, Concert Night

A date helps when the same group of friends travels every year. Cabin Weekend 2026 and Cabin Weekend 2027 can then sit side by side without anyone adding to the wrong one.

## What are good names for roommates and households?

Use the address, the unit or the bill, because the group lasts as long as the lease. Run separate groups when the people differ.

- One home: 14 Maple St, Apt 4B, The Flat
- Rent and bills in one group: Rent and Bills, House Costs
- Separate groups: Groceries Fund, Utilities, Internet and Streaming
- A group for moving in: Move-In Costs, New Place Setup

The rent, the groceries and the one-off couch are usually better as separate groups when the same people are not in all three. A group called House Stuff tends to attract everything, which makes it hard to audit later.

## What are good names for couples?

Plain names such as Household or Our Place last longest, because a couple's shared costs run for years and a name you outgrow gets awkward.

- Plain: Household, Our Place, Home Base
- By purpose: Date Nights, Groceries, Shared Bills
- For a project: Wedding Fund, Move Fund

## What are good names for friends, clubs and gifts?

Name it for the activity, since the group is the activity's money.

- Regular nights: Friday Dinner Club, Poker Night Pot, Trivia Tuesdays
- Clubs and teams: Book Club Dues, Pickup Soccer Fees
- Gifts: Dana's 30th Gift, Teacher Gift, Office Farewell

For a surprise gift, keep the recipient out of the group and pick a name they would not mind seeing, such as Office Farewell.

## Are funny group names a good idea?

They are fine when every member still understands the name. A joke that only the founder gets turns into a mystery on the member list a month later.

- Owe Club, The Debt Collectors, Pay Up Please
- Receipts and Regrets, Split Happens, Even Steven
- Who Paid Last Time, The Settling Committee

Test a funny name by asking whether a new member could tell what the group is for. If not, add the purpose after the joke, like Even Steven Groceries.

## How does naming work in EvenOut?

EvenOut asks for a group type (Trip, Household, Event or Other), and its name field shows "Tahoe Trip, Apartment, …" as a hint. Trips and events can have dates, so the name does not have to carry them, and each type gets its own default cover. Any member who is not a viewer can rename a group later. [How to move a Splitwise group to EvenOut](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/move-splitwise-group-to-evenout) lets you pick a new name during the import.

## What should you do next?

Pick the pattern for your situation, name the group, and add the people. [How Splitwise works](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-does-splitwise-work) covers the first expense, and [adding someone to a Splitwise group](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/add-someone-to-a-splitwise-group) covers the invite. For shared homes, a [roommate agreement template](https://www.evenoutapp.com/templates/roommate-agreement-template) is a good place to write down the rules the group name cannot hold.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should a group name include the people in it?

Usually not, because members come and go. Two people who share costs do not need a group at all. In Splitwise an expense outside a group is visible only to the people involved in it. Use a person's name for a one-person purpose, such as Dana's 30th Gift.

### How many groups should you make?

One for each set of people and purpose. Say three roommates share rent and bills, then split the cost of a party with 5 friends. Keep the party in its own group, so the friends' balances never sit next to the household's. Settle a group before you start the next one with the same people.

### Can you rename a group in EvenOut?

Yes. Any member who is not a viewer can rename, retype or redate a group in group settings. If you move a Splitwise group over with the CSV import, you type a new name for it under "Group name" during the import.

### What belongs in a group description?

The rules that settle arguments: the due date for rent, who holds each account and how each bill is split. EvenOut lets you add a description in group settings, so a rule like "Rent on the 1st, internet split equally" sits where everyone sees it.
