EvenOut tracks each expense in its own currency (154 currencies), keeps balances per currency and records a settle-up whichever way you pay, with no daily expense limit on the free plan. As of October 2026, Splitwise supports 100+ currencies but ties sending money, its card and transaction import to regions, and says Pro's price may vary by country.

Key points:
- EvenOut tracks each expense in its own currency (154 currencies), keeps balances per currency and records settle-ups whichever way you pay.
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.
- Splitwise tracks expenses in 100+ currencies, and each expense can carry its own currency. Converting them is a Pro feature.
- Splitwise's money movement is regional: Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal in the US, Pay by Bank in select European countries, and Record a payment elsewhere.
- The Splitwise Card is US-only, and transaction import depends on the country: the Pro page says US only, and the help article says select countries.

## Does Splitwise work outside the US?

Splitwise lists 100+ currencies, but it ties some features to regions. So the useful answer is feature by feature. As of October 2026, the regional rules Splitwise states are about payments, the card, transaction import and the Pro price. EvenOut avoids the payment rules, because Settle up only records a payment, whichever way you paid.

## How do EvenOut and Splitwise compare outside the US?

EvenOut records a payment made by any method and has no daily expense limit on the free plan, while Splitwise's in-app payment options depend on where you live.

| Feature | EvenOut | Splitwise, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Paying a friend back | Settle up records a payment made by any method | US: Splitwise Pay, Venmo, PayPal. Select European countries: Pay by Bank. Elsewhere: Record a payment |
| Currencies | 154, set on each expense, balances kept per currency | 100+, set on each expense, balances kept per currency |
| Free plan | No daily expense limit, no ads | Up to 4 expenses a day |

Two more Splitwise features depend on region. The Splitwise Card is US-only. Transaction import is a Pro feature, and the two sources disagree on where it works: the Pro page says it is "Currently available only in the US", and the Pro help article says "select countries only". Where it is not offered, add the expense by hand.

## How do payments work where Splitwise Pay is not offered?

You pay outside Splitwise and then record it. In the US, Splitwise offers Splitwise Pay plus Venmo and PayPal integrations. Venmo needs a USD balance. In select European countries it offers Pay by Bank, which works with personal checking accounts and does not support cross-currency payments. Everywhere else, Splitwise tells you to settle up outside the app and use "Record a payment".

1. **Pay your friend** by bank transfer, cash or any other method you both use.
2. **Tap "Settle up"** and record a payment made outside Splitwise.
3. **Enter the amount** and save it.

Recording a payment does not transfer any funds. It only updates the balance.

## Which currencies does it support, and does it convert them?

It supports 100+ currencies, and each expense can have its own. To change one, tap the currency symbol next to the amount while you add or edit it. That only changes the label on the expense and does not convert the amount. New expenses default to the last currency used in that group or friendship.

Balances stay separate by currency. A friendship can show "You owe $12.45 and you are owed £8.72" side by side. Converting is a Pro feature: a "Convert to [default currency]" button converts every expense in the group, settled ones included, at the mid-market rate from Open Exchange Rates at that moment. Splitwise's help says reversing it by emailing support "isn't always possible". [How to change currency in Splitwise](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/change-currency-in-splitwise) walks through the steps, and [whether Splitwise converts currency](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/does-splitwise-convert-currency) explains what Pro changes.

## How many languages does it support?

The count depends on the source. Splitwise's home page says "7+ languages", and the store listing names English plus 11 others, 12 in total. If you need a particular language, check it on the store listing before you plan a group around it. EvenOut's interface is in English only.

## What does Pro cost outside the US?

The price depends on where you are and when you subscribe. Splitwise's Terms (last updated February 8th, 2024) say the price "may vary due to date of subscription, country, local taxes and regulations, promotions". The store listing says the price "will vary by plan and country". The Pro page and the sign-up page show no price when you are logged out. [What Splitwise Pro costs](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/splitwise-pro-cost-and-plans) explains where the amount you would pay shows up.

## What should you use outside the US?

For most groups outside the US, EvenOut is the better fit: its free plan handles several currencies in one group, has no daily expense limit and has no ads, and Settle up records a payment whichever method you use, so there are no regional payment rules to check. Each expense can be in its own currency, from 154 currencies, and balances are kept per currency. A new group starts in USD, so tap the currency chip next to the amount to change it on each expense.

EvenOut does not convert currencies or move money. If you want to send money through the app, Splitwise offers that in the regions above.

If you are moving a group from Splitwise, Import from Splitwise is free, and it keeps each expense's currency from the file. The only paid features in EvenOut are receipt scanning and the assistant, so the currency handling above is free.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use Splitwise to pay a friend in another country?

Pay by Bank, offered in select European countries, works with personal checking accounts and does not support cross-currency payments. Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal are for the US. For anything else, pay outside Splitwise and record the payment.

### Do I need a phone number to sign up?

Splitwise's privacy statement says registration asks for your name, email address, phone number and a password, and that an email address is required. It describes a phone number as an extra layer of security.

### How do friends in other countries join my group?

Nobody can join a Splitwise group on their own. A member invites them by email, phone or an invite link, and friends invited by email or phone can be added to expenses before they accept. In EvenOut, Add a guest tracks the share of someone who is not on EvenOut yet, and you can invite them later.

### Does the Splitwise Card work outside the US?

No. The card page describes the Splitwise Card as US-only, rolling out to eligible US users of Splitwise Pay, and Splitwise Pay is for US residents aged 18 or over. Outside the US, pay by any method you both use and record the payment in Splitwise.

### Does EvenOut limit how many expenses I can add while travelling?

The free plan has no daily expense limit, where Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 a day as of October 2026. EvenOut keeps guards against abuse that an ordinary group does not reach, such as 1,000 new expenses and payments a day per account.
