In Splitwise, tap the calendar icon (web: click the date field) when adding or editing an expense and pick weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly. It repeats forever until you stop it: choose "Just this once" on mobile or "Cancel future recurrences" on the web. EvenOut repeats are free, with Pause, Resume and Stop repeating.

Key points:
- EvenOut repeats weekly, monthly or yearly bills for free, with Pause, Resume and Stop repeating on a Repeating expenses screen, and no daily expense limit on the free plan.
- EvenOut shows each repeat's schedule in the app as "Next on Oct 30", "Paused", "Paused · Needs attention" or "Ended", from the group menu, group settings or friend menu.
- Set the Splitwise repeat from the calendar icon on mobile or the date field on the web, when you create or edit an expense.
- Splitwise offers weekly, fortnightly, monthly and yearly, with an optional email reminder. A repeat runs forever until you stop it.
- Only the web app lists all your Splitwise recurring expenses in one place.

## How do you set up a recurring expense in Splitwise?

Add or edit an expense, then tap the calendar icon on mobile or click the date field on the web, and choose how often it repeats.

1. Start a new expense, or edit an existing one, and fill in the amount, who paid and the split.
2. Tap the calendar icon (mobile) or click the date field (web).
3. Choose weekly, fortnightly (every other week), monthly or yearly. You can also set an email reminder before each repeat is posted. It goes to all members on the expense.
4. Save the expense.

As of October 2026, Splitwise says a recurring expense repeats forever unless you stop it or remove an involved member from the group. Say you pay a $1,860 rent on the 1st and split it equally among three roommates. Set it up as monthly, paid by you. Each month the other two owe you $620 each, so you are owed $1,240. Over a year, each roommate's share comes to 12 × $620 = $7,440.

## How do you edit a recurring expense?

Edit the latest expense in the series, in the group or friendship it belongs to. Splitwise says a new amount on that entry applies to all future repeats and does not affect past expenses. The calendar icon on mobile and the date field on the web are there when you edit an expense, not only when you create one. [Editing, deleting and restoring a Splitwise expense](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/edit-delete-restore-splitwise-expense) covers the rest of the edit screen, such as the amount and the split.

## How do you stop a recurring expense in Splitwise?

On mobile, open the latest expense in the series, edit it, tap the calendar icon and change the repeat to "Just this once". On the web, open the latest expense and click "Cancel future recurrences". Earlier expenses stay, and nothing new is added. A repeat that nobody cancels keeps going, so cancel it when the arrangement really ends.

## Where do you see all your recurring expenses?

Only the web app lists all recurring expenses in one place. On the web, click "All Expenses" in the left sidebar, then click the calendar icon. You can also click the calendar icon inside a specific group or friendship. On mobile there is no single list: tapping an expense shows its details, such as "Repeats monthly" and the date of the next one. If you manage several, such as rent, internet and a cleaner, use the web app to review them together.

## How does EvenOut handle repeating expenses?

EvenOut repeats weekly, monthly or yearly bills for free, and manages them from a Repeating expenses screen with Pause, Resume and Stop repeating. The table sets it beside Splitwise as of October 2026.

| Feature | EvenOut | Splitwise (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Not labelled Pro |
| Daily expense limit on the free plan | None | Free accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day |
| Stopping a repeat | "Stop repeating" (expenses already added stay), or "Pause" and "Resume" | "Just this once" on mobile, or "Cancel future recurrences" on the web |
| Where you see them | "Repeating expenses" in the group "…" menu, group settings and friend menu, or the "Repeats monthly" row on an expense | One list in the web app; on mobile, open the expense to see "Repeats monthly" |

- **Set up:** "Repeat" sits inside "Add to this expense", and only when you are adding an expense. Choose "Never", "Weekly", "Monthly" or "Yearly". The app shows a line such as "Next one Nov 5. EvenOut adds it for you." The expense you save is the first one. Setting it up needs a connection.
- **What gets added:** each later one is added automatically as a normal expense, with the same payer and split, around 9:00 in your time zone, as you.
- **What you can do:** "Pause" (nothing new is added until you resume), "Resume" or "Stop repeating" (expenses already added stay). Each repeat shows "Next on Oct 30", "Paused", "Paused · Needs attention" or "Ended".

EvenOut repeats weekly, monthly or yearly, with no fortnightly option, no daily or custom interval and no end date in the app.

## What does a repeat add up to over a year?

The interval changes the yearly total a lot. Say a cleaner costs $90 a visit and three people split it: each person pays $1,560 a year if the bill repeats weekly and $780 if it repeats fortnightly, which means every other week, about 26 times a year.

| Repeat | Charges a year | The $90 bill over a year | Each of 3 pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $4,680 | $1,560 |
| Fortnightly | 26 | $2,340 | $780 |
| Monthly | 12 | $1,080 | $360 |
| Yearly | 1 | $90 | $30 |

Pick the interval that matches how the bill is really charged. A bill that lands every other Friday is fortnightly, and setting it to monthly would record 12 charges instead of about 26.

## What to do next

Decide the interval from how the bill is charged, set it up once, and check the first repeat when it appears. For a weekly, monthly or yearly bill, EvenOut sets it up for free with no daily expense limit on the free plan. ## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need Splitwise Pro for recurring expenses?

No. Splitwise's home page lists recurring expenses among its core features. The Pro list names other things: removal of the daily expense limit, transaction import, currency conversion, receipt scanning and itemization, charts, search, default splits, an ad-free app and early access to new features.

### What happens to an EvenOut repeat if the person who set it up leaves the group?

The server pauses a repeat it can no longer add, for example when its creator has left. The repeat then shows "Paused · Needs attention" on the Repeating expenses screen.

### If I pause an EvenOut repeat, are the skipped bills added later?

No. "Resume" picks up from the next date, and the skipped ones are not added.

### How many repeating expenses can an EvenOut group have?

Up to 50 open repeats per group or friend. Repeats are free, and they only add bills. They do not settle anything.
