# Why do restaurants charge to split meals? Two kinds of rule and what they cost

A charge to split a meal is a rule the restaurant sets and posts itself, and it covers one of two things: sharing a dish or dividing a check. As of October 2026, Gibraltar Grille's menu adds $2 to a split soup, salad or entrée, and Dinner Party allows up to four split checks per table for large parties. Ask before you order.

Key points:
- Two different things get called splitting: sharing a dish, which changes the plate, and dividing a check, which changes the payment. Each has its own rule.
- Gibraltar Grille's menu lists a $2 split plate charge on any split soup, salad or entrée. On a $9 soup that would be about 22 percent.
- Dinner Party's reservation page allows up to four split checks per table for large parties and asks you to tell your server at the start of the meal.
- When a restaurant allows one check or only a few, one person can pay it and the rest repay their share. In EvenOut the collector splits it equally or by item.

## What does a charge to split a meal cover?

It covers one of two different changes, and a restaurant can write a rule for either. Sharing a dish changes the plate, because one entrée becomes two portions for one price. Dividing a check changes the payment, because one table becomes several payments. A restaurant that charges to split a dish is putting a price on the first change, and one that limits split checks is putting a cap on the second.

Here is one posted example of each, as of October 2026.

| Kind of split | Posted example | Where it is posted |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing a dish | Gibraltar Grille: "There is a $2 Split Plate Charge on any split Soups Salads or Entrees" | The full menu PDF |
| Dividing a check | Dinner Party: up to four split checks per table for large parties | The reservation page |

Dinner Party's page counts a party of 7 or more as a large party. Other restaurants set their own sizes and limits, so one page is a sample and not a rule for every table.

## What does a split plate charge cost per person?

A flat charge is small on an entrée and large on a soup. Take Gibraltar Grille's $2 and say two friends share one dish, either a $24 entrée or a $9 soup.

| Shared dish | Total with the $2 charge | Each of two pays | Two separate orders, each pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| $24 entrée | $26 | $13 | $24 |
| $9 soup | $11 | $5.50 | $9 |

Sharing still costs less than two orders in both rows. The charge adds about 8 percent to the $24 entrée ($2 divided by $24) and about 22 percent to the $9 soup ($2 divided by $9), so it matters most on cheap dishes. Ask when you order whether the $2 applies per dish or per person. If it were per person, the entrée would cost $28 in total, or $14 each.

## What does a limit on split checks mean for your table?

It means you group people into the number of checks allowed and settle inside each group. Dinner Party's page says it is "happy to accommodate up to four split checks per table" for large parties, and asks guests to "let your server know at the start of your meal" if they want to divide the bill.

Say ten guests and a $640 total with tax and tip. With four checks allowed, the table forms groups of 3, 3, 2 and 2, and each check holds what its group ordered.

| Check | People | Total | Each pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3 | $210 | $70 |
| B | 3 | $180 | $60 |
| C | 2 | $150 | $75 |
| D | 2 | $100 | $50 |

The four checks add up to $210 + $180 + $150 + $100 = $640. An even split of the same $640 would be $64 each, so the groups end up above and below that figure depending on what they ordered. Within a group, the person who pays the check collects the rest.

## What can you do when the table has to be one check?

Let one person pay the whole check and have everyone else repay their share. The collector enters the expense once and does not have to add anything up at the table.

1. **Ask first.** When you book or sit down, find out how many checks the table can have and whether sharing a dish costs extra.
2. **Pick the collector.** Choose someone who is happy to front the money and chase it later.
3. **Enter the check once.** Record the total, who paid and how it splits.
4. **Repay the collector.** Each person pays what the split says they owe.

In EvenOut the collector adds the check as an expense they paid. For an even table the equal split works, and tapping a name leaves that person out as "Not in". When orders differ, "By item" takes one line per dish with chips for who had it, and the lines must add up to the check, so tax and tip go in as items. A friend who is not on EvenOut can be added to the group as a guest. EvenOut records payments and does not move money.

## What should you do next?

Ask two things before you order: whether sharing a dish costs extra, per dish or per person, and how many checks the table can split into. Then pick the method for the rest. [Split check meaning](https://www.evenoutapp.com/glossary/split-check) explains the three things people ask for under that phrase, and [how to split a restaurant bill](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-split-a-restaurant-bill) compares the four fair methods. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can a restaurant refuse to split a bill?

A restaurant sets its own check policy, such as a cap on split checks or one check for a large party. Dinner Party's page is one example, with up to four split checks per table for large parties. This page does not cover what local rules allow, so ask the restaurant before you order.

### How do you ask about a split charge politely?

Ask when you order, not when the check comes. Something like: Could we share the salmon, and is there a charge to split it? Then ask whether the charge is per dish or per person, so you know the total before the plates arrive.

### What if only part of the table wants separate checks?

Put the table on one check and let one person pay it. The people who wanted their own check send that person what they ordered, plus a share of tax and tip. In an expense app the collector enters the check once and splits it by item, so nobody redoes the sums.
