A household bills spreadsheet is a 12-month grid with one column per bill and one row per month, plus a yearly total row and an average a month row. Flag each bill as fixed or variable and note who fronts it. For a bill that changes, the average is the amount to use in a monthly repeat.

Key points:
- Use one column per bill and one row per month, with a Year total row and an Average a month row under the grid.
- Fixed bills such as rent and internet repeat the same amount. Variable bills such as electric take the average of the last 12 months.
- In the example, electric of $1,104 over 12 months averages $92.00 a month, or $30.67 each for three people (one pays $30.66).
- In Excel, AVERAGE skips empty cells but counts zeros, so leave a month empty when no bill came.

## How to use this template

Print the tables below or copy them into Excel or Google Sheets. The bill list is filled in once. The two grids get one row per month, filled in as each bill arrives.

1. **Fill in the bill list.** For each bill, write the day it is due, whether it is fixed or variable, who fronts it and how it is split. Rent, internet and a phone plan are usually fixed. Electric, gas and water move with use.
2. **Enter each amount in the month's row** when the bill arrives, and leave the cell empty until then. Say the twelve months sit in rows 2 to 13 and the header is in row 1.
3. **Total the year.** Under a column, `=SUM(B2:B13)` gives the Year total. The row below it, `=ROUND(AVERAGE(B2:B13),2)`, gives the Average a month. In Excel, AVERAGE skips empty cells and counts zeros, so leave a month empty when no bill came and type 0 only for a bill of $0.
4. **Mark the month settled.** The last column of Grid B reads yes once everyone has paid whoever fronted that month's bills.
5. **Add the averages.** Once a full year is in, the seven Average a month cells added together are what the household's bills cost in a typical month.

## A worked example with one variable bill

Say three roommates paid these electric bills from January to December: $96, $88, $79, $71, $64, $82, $118, $131, $104, $76, $85 and $110. The Year total is $1,104 and the Average a month is $92.00.

The average earns its place in summer. July at $118 is $26 over it, August at $131 is $39 over, and May at $64 is $28 under. Split three ways, $92.00 is $30.67, $30.67 and $30.66, so one person pays a cent less. Using that one number every month makes the payment predictable, and the grid shows how far each real bill landed from it.

## What to agree on

### Who fronts what

The "Fronted by" column shows who is carrying money at any moment. One person fronting all seven bills is out more cash than three people each fronting two or three, so spread them if one person's card is the limit.

### Which average to use

Use the last 12 months, not the last 3. A spring average of March to May in the example is $71.33, against $92.00 for the year, so a repeat set in spring would run low all summer.

### What counts as settled

Mark a month yes only when every share is paid. A month with one share still open stays no, and that balance becomes the first line of the next month.

## The same setup in EvenOut

EvenOut has no data export, so the app and the sheet do not feed each other. Choose one as the record. In the app, the grid becomes a group.

1. Create a group, choose "Household" ("Rent and bills") and add your roommates.
2. Add each bill as an expense with "Paid by" set to whoever fronts it. EvenOut guesses the category from the description, such as Utilities, Internet, Phone or Subscriptions, and Home is the closest fit for rent. Check the guess.
3. For a fixed bill, open "Photo, repeat, pending or note", tap "Repeat" and choose "Monthly". For a variable bill, enter the average as the amount and repeat it monthly, then edit that month's expense to the real figure when the bill arrives.
4. Open "Repeating expenses" from the group's "…" menu to see each repeat with its "Next on" date. "Charts" shows a "By category" donut and "Over time" bars with a "spent a month, on average" figure.

Each repeat adds a normal expense with the same payer and split. "Settle up" records the payment, and the money still moves however you usually pay.

For bills that change every month, [how to track recurring bills](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/track-recurring-bills) goes further. [How to split utilities](https://www.evenoutapp.com/guides/how-to-split-utilities) compares four methods on one bill, and the [utility bill split by usage calculator](https://www.evenoutapp.com/tools/utilities-split-by-usage-calculator) works out each person's share when use differs.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you change a repeat when the average changes?

In EvenOut, open "Repeating expenses", tap the repeat and choose "Stop repeating". Expenses already added stay. Then add the bill again at the new average with Repeat set to Monthly. Do this once a year, after the twelfth month of figures is in.

### Should one person front every bill?

It works, but that person carries the money until the others pay. If Ana fronts the $92.00 electric bill for three people, Ben and Cy owe her about $61 between them until they settle. Splitting the fronting, say rent with one person and utilities with another, keeps each person's balance smaller.

### What time of day does a repeat add the bill?

Around 9:00 in your time zone on the schedule's date, as a normal expense with the same payer and split. Setting up a repeat needs a connection, so create it before you travel. A group or friend can hold up to 50 open repeats, which is more than a household has bills.
