Best budget apps for couples in 2027

6 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

EvenOut is not a budget or bank-sync app. It works out who owes whom, free, with no daily expense limit and no ads. As of October 2026, Monarch Core costs $99.99 a year and YNAB $109 a year, each covering both partners, and Honeydue is free and lets each owner choose what a partner sees.

Key points

  • EvenOut is free with no daily expense limit and no ads. It shows your partner only the expenses you add together, and it links no bank accounts.
  • On $1,860 of rent split 55/45, EvenOut's Percent split shows $1,023.00 and $837.00, and it nets rent against groceries into one payment.
  • As of October 2026, one Monarch Core subscription is $99.99 a year and one YNAB subscription is $109 a year, and each covers both partners. Honeydue is free.
  • Honeydue sets sharing per account and can hide single transactions. In Monarch both partners see everything, and in YNAB the Group Manager sees every budget.

How does each app share money between two people?

EvenOut shows your partner only the expenses you add together and links no bank accounts. Honeydue lets the owner of each account choose what a partner sees, Monarch shows both partners everything, and YNAB shows every budget to whoever manages the group. As of October 2026:

App What your partner sees Who is covered
EvenOut Only the expenses you add together. No bank accounts are linked Each partner has an account, or one joins a group as a guest
Honeydue Per account: “Share both balances and transactions”, “Share balances only” or “Nothing at all”. Single transactions can be hidden Couples, free
Monarch All accounts and transactions. Shared Views label items mine, theirs or ours Household members under one subscription
YNAB Each member has a login, and “all budgets are always shared with the Group Manager” Up to six people, one subscription

Say Sam shares a joint account fully and then buys a $240 birthday gift on it. In Honeydue, Sam can hide that one transaction, and can set a savings account to “Share balances only” or “Nothing at all”. In Monarch, Sam’s partner sees all accounts and transactions in the shared household, gift included, and Shared Views add mine, theirs and ours labels on top. If part of your money should stay private, that is the line to check first.

What does each cost a couple per year?

EvenOut and Honeydue are free, and one Monarch Core or YNAB subscription covers both partners for about $50.00 and $54.50 each a year. As of October 2026:

App Per year Each of two partners Billed monthly instead
EvenOut Free, no ads Free Free
Honeydue Free; its listing shows “Contains ads” Free Free
Monarch Core $99.99 About $50.00 $14.99 a month, $179.88 a year
YNAB $109 $54.50 $14.99 a month, $179.88 a year

Over two years Monarch Core comes to $199.98 and YNAB to $218.00. Monarch also shows a Plus plan at $199.99 a year. YNAB prices are in US dollars, plus tax where applicable. EvenOut’s Pro plan ($9.99 a month or $79.99 a year) covers only receipt scanning and the assistant, so splitting itself never needs it.

EvenOut

EvenOut is not a budget app and does not link to bank accounts. It does one job: it keeps the running count of who owes whom for the things you split. You connect with your partner by code or link, and every expense between you lives on one friend page (“Dan owes you $X”), with no group to create.

Each expense takes its own split: Equally, Exact amounts, Percent, Shares or By item. A monthly repeat adds rent for you, and the friend’s charts show where your shared money goes. The free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads.

Say one month has $1,860 of rent that Alex paid, split 55/45, and $412.60 of groceries that Sam paid, split equally. Choose Percent at 55 and 45 and each person’s dollar share shows under the name: $1,023.00 for Alex and $837.00 for Sam. Groceries are $206.30 each.

Alex paid $1,860 and carries $1,229.30 of shares, so Alex is owed $630.70. Sam paid $412.60 and carries $1,043.30, so Sam owes $630.70. One recorded payment in Settle up clears the month, instead of two transfers.

Honeydue

Honeydue’s site says “Honeydue is a free mobile app.” Its how-it-works page lists connections to “over 20,000 financial institutions across 5 countries”. The app description mentions dividing up expenses (“Divvy up expenses, and square up with your partner when the time is right”), bill reminders, category spending limits and partner chat.

Its app listing carries a “Contains ads” label. Joint Cash is described on a waitlist page that says “Reserve your cards and join the waitlist.”

Monarch

Monarch Core is $99.99 a year (shown as $8.33 a month) or $14.99 a month. You can invite “one or more members of your household” under a single subscription, each with their own login, and “It costs nothing to add other members to your household.”

Both partners see all accounts and transactions. Shared Views, announced on October 22, 2025, label accounts and transactions as mine, theirs or ours and filter by owner, and Monarch says “We don’t currently offer a way to budget separately and apart.” For a head-to-head with Honeydue, see Honeydue against Monarch.

YNAB

YNAB costs $109 a year (shown as $9.08 a month) or $14.99 a month. Up to six people share one subscription, each with a login. The Group Manager is the one billed, can invite and remove members, and sees every budget in the group.

For a couple, that makes one of you the manager and the other a member whose budget the manager can see. YNAB’s own help guide pairs it with a separate splitting app for working out who owes whom.

How should a couple choose?

Start from what you need to do, then what each partner needs to see.

  • You split rent, groceries and trips and want one balance. EvenOut keeps each shared expense with Equally, Exact amounts, Percent, Shares or By item, adds rent on a monthly repeat, and is free with no daily expense limit and no ads. It has no budgets and no bank sync, so it runs beside any app below.
  • You want to see every account together. Monarch shows both partners all accounts and transactions under one subscription.
  • You want to control what each partner sees. Honeydue sets sharing per account, and can hide single transactions.
  • You follow a budgeting method and one of you will run it. YNAB covers up to six people, and the manager sees every budget.

A budget app tracks your money, and a splitter tracks what you owe each other. Budget app or expense splitter for couples explains when you need which, and the best expense splitting apps for couples compares the splitters. Whether to pool your money at all is a separate question, covered in joint account vs separate accounts. Pairing a budget app with EvenOut keeps each job in one place.

Frequently asked questions

How long are the Monarch and YNAB trials?

As of October 2026, Monarch offers a free 7-day trial, then $99.99 a year, and asks for a payment method up front. YNAB offers a 34-day trial with no credit card when you sign up directly, and nothing is charged unless you subscribe.

How much does yearly billing save over paying monthly?

Both Monarch Core and YNAB charge $14.99 a month, which is $179.88 over twelve months. Yearly billing saves $79.89 on Monarch Core ($99.99 a year) and $70.88 on YNAB ($109 a year). YNAB adds tax where applicable.

How does YNAB work with a bill-splitting app?

YNAB's help guide says its options work with all bill-splitting apps, including Venmo Groups. You use a category named Splitting and split transactions, YNAB records the money, and the splitting app tracks who owes whom.

Does my partner need an EvenOut account?

For the one-on-one friend page, yes: you connect by scanning each other's code or opening an invite link. In a group you can add your partner as a guest by name, track their share now and send a claim link later, so their shares move to their own account.
