How to track recurring bills that change every month

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

Sort each bill as fixed or variable. A fixed bill such as rent or internet can repeat on its own in EvenOut, Weekly, Monthly or Yearly, with the same payer and split. A variable bill such as electric or water is added by hand each month, starting from Duplicate expense on last month's entry. Both are free.

Key points

  • Fixed bills (rent, internet, a shared subscription) repeat Weekly, Monthly or Yearly. Variable bills (electric, water, a usage-based phone plan) are added by hand.
  • For a variable bill, open last month's expense, tap Duplicate expense, change the amount and save. It takes a few taps.
  • Annual bills are a Yearly repeat, and a utility deposit is a Pending payment, which stays out of balances until you confirm the final charge.
  • EvenOut repeats have limits: no daily or custom interval, no end date, a connection to set up, and a repeat whose creator left shows Paused · Needs attention.

Which recurring bills can repeat on their own?

The ones that cost the same each time. Sort every bill into fixed or variable, then pick the method that matches. Examples of recurring payments in a shared home include rent, internet, a phone plan, streaming and cloud subscriptions, renters insurance, a parking space, a storage unit and a cleaning service.

Bill The amount How to track it
Rent Same every month Monthly repeat
Internet Same every month Monthly repeat
Shared subscription Same each billing period Monthly repeat, or Yearly if billed yearly
Renters insurance Same once a year Yearly repeat
Electric and gas Moves with the season Add by hand each month
Water Moves with who is home Add by hand each month
Phone plan with usage charges Moves with usage Add by hand each month

Say three roommates pay $2,100 rent, a $63 internet plan and an $18 streaming plan. Those three fixed bills come to $2,181 a month, which is $727 each. Once they repeat, nobody enters them again.

How do you set up a repeating bill in EvenOut?

Set it up once, on the first bill. The expense you save is the first one, and EvenOut adds every later one for you.

  1. Add the expense. Tap “Add expense”, enter the amount and a description such as “Rent”, then choose the group, who paid and the split.
  2. Open the extras. Tap “Photo, repeat, pending or note”, which opens the “Add to this expense” sheet, and choose “Repeat”.
  3. Pick Weekly, Monthly or Yearly. The sheet shows when the next one lands, for example “Next one Nov 5. EvenOut adds it for you.”
  4. Save. Tap “Save”, and the first bill is added.

Each later one is added as a normal expense, with the same payer and split, around 9:00 in your time zone, and it is added as you. Setting it up needs a connection. The Repeat option appears when you add an expense, not when you edit one.

How do you track a bill that changes every month?

Add it by hand each month, and start from last month’s entry. A repeat adds the expense you saved again, so it fits bills that stay the same. Electric, water and usage-based phone bills arrive with a new number, so each is its own expense.

  1. Open last month’s expense for that bill.
  2. Tap “Duplicate expense”. The Duplicate expense page opens filled in from that bill.
  3. Change the amount and check the date. The date is under “When was this?”.
  4. Check the payer and the split, then tap “Save”.

Say the electric bill is $142.60 in January, $131.20 in February and $97.85 in March. That is three expenses, each from a duplicate of the one before. If the split changes with who is home, change the shares each time, as splitting a water bill by who is home shows. How to split electric and gas bills covers the energy side.

What is a monthly due-date checklist?

Five habits cover a household. Do them on the same dates each month, and nobody has to chase anyone.

  1. Before the first of the month, open “Repeating expenses” and check that each repeat shows “Next on” with the date you expect.
  2. When a variable bill arrives, duplicate last month’s entry, change the amount and save it the same day.
  3. When a price changes, such as internet going from $63 to $70, stop the old repeat, then add the bill with the new amount and a new repeat from the month the price changes. Expenses already added stay.
  4. When someone moves in or out, do the same, because a repeat keeps the split it was saved with.
  5. Once a month, settle up. A repeat only adds bills. It does not settle them.

For a spreadsheet version of the same routine, see the household bills template, and for subscriptions with renewal dates, see how to track shared subscriptions.

How do you handle annual bills and deposits?

An annual bill is a Yearly repeat, and a utility deposit is a Pending payment.

Say renters insurance is $216 a year. Save it once with Repeat set to “Yearly”, split equally among three people. Each person is charged $72, once a year, and the group does not have to remember it.

A utility deposit is money held, not a final charge. Add it with “Pending payment” in the “Add to this expense” sheet. It shows under a “Pending” card marked “Not counted in balances”, with its row tagged “on hold”. When the final amount is known, open the expense and tap “Confirm expense”, then type the final charge. Everyone’s share re-splits to match.

What can a repeat not do?

Know the limits before you rely on one.

  • Intervals. Only Weekly, Monthly and Yearly. There is no daily or custom interval and no end date. When a lease or a payment plan ends, open the repeat and tap “Stop repeating”.
  • A connection. Setting up, pausing, resuming and stopping a repeat all need one.
  • A creator who left. If EvenOut cannot add a repeat, for example because the person who set it up left the group, it shows “Paused · Needs attention”. Stop it, and have a current member save the bill again with a new repeat.
  • Who can change it. Viewers cannot. In a group set to “Only their own”, only the person who added or paid the expense can, plus the owner.

How to split utilities compares methods across the household bills, and how to split an internet bill covers the flat bill that suits a repeat best.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bill repeat every two weeks or every three months?

No. EvenOut offers Never, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly, with no daily or custom interval. For a bill every two weeks or every three months, open the last one, tap Duplicate expense and add each one by hand. As of October 2026, Splitwise's recurring expenses include a fortnightly option, meaning every other week.

What happens to the months I skip while a repeat is paused?

Nothing new is added while it is paused. Resume picks up from the next date, and skipped dates are not added afterward. If you need the missed month, add it by hand with Duplicate expense.

Where do I see everything that repeats?

Open the group's menu and choose Repeating expenses, or go to group settings, then More. The friend's menu has the same screen, and so does the Repeats monthly row on an expense that a repeat added. Each repeat shows its schedule and Next on, Paused, Paused · Needs attention or Ended.

Is the recurring bill tracker free?

Yes. Setting up and managing repeats is free in EvenOut, and so is everything else except receipt scanning and the assistant. A group or a friend can have up to 50 open repeats.
