Receipt splitter apps compared (2027)
Quick answer
A receipt splitter turns a bill into items so each person pays for what they ordered, with tax and tip shared in proportion. EvenOut's By item split is free, its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and Pro adds receipt scanning. As of October 2026, Tab is listed free, Splitty gives 3 free scans and Splitkaro 3 a month.
Key points
- EvenOut's By item split is free, and its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, and its receipt scan and itemize are Pro.

What does a receipt splitter do?
A receipt splitter does three jobs: it gets the items off a bill, lets each person claim theirs, and shares tax and tip in proportion to what each person claimed (how to split a bill with tax and tip covers the arithmetic). The apps differ most on the first job. Some read a photo of the receipt, some make you type every dish, and some keep the photo with the expense.
How do the seven apps compare?
As of October 2026, EvenOut, Splitwise, Splitty and Tab read the items off a receipt photo for you to assign. Splitkaro lists receipt scanning, Spliit lists an AI receipt scan in Beta, and Plates starts from dishes you type.

|---|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | Yes, in Pro: store, date, currency, items, tax, tip, total | By item split, no daily expense limit, no ads | Pro: $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year (US, August 2026) |
| Splitwise | Yes, scan and itemize are Pro | Up to 4 expenses a day | Pro, price varies by country and date |

What does the free plan include next to the scan?
As of October 2026, EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit, no ads, and search and charts at no cost. Splitwise lists search and charts under Pro, and Splitkaro lists search and analytics under Premium.
| App | Free plan limit | Ads | Search and charts |

EvenOut: scan in Pro, by item for free
EvenOut’s By item split is free, and so are search, charts and repeating expenses. Add a line per dish with a name, a price and chips for who had it, and each line splits evenly among the people chosen. The lines have to add up to the expense total, so tax and tip go in as lines of their own. EvenOut does not show per-person totals while you build the split, and the saved expense lists each person’s amount rather than the items.
In Pro, Scan receipt takes a photo or one from your library and reads the store, date, currency, line items, subtotal, tax, tip and total. Every item starts out split equally. Tap an item to choose who shared it and how: equally, by exact amounts, by percent or by shares. Tax and tip are shared in proportion to each person’s items. Scanned items cannot be edited, and scanning needs a connection. Scanning and the assistant share a usage budget under Pro. A photo of the receipt can be attached to an expense for free when you add it, and the balance with each group or friend keeps running after the dinner.
Splitwise: scanning and itemizing are Pro
Splitwise’s Pro page lists receipt scanning and itemization, and its help center says only Pro subscribers can scan and itemize receipts, but every group member sees the results. The split guide describes an itemized split with items, tax, tip and discounts, and says Pro users can itemize by scanning a receipt. The free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, and an itemized dinner is one expense.
Splitty: three free scans, then $9.99 a year
Splitty’s FAQ describes it as an app for one-time splits rather than recurring expenses. You scan a receipt, assign items to each person and send payment requests through Venmo, Cash App or PayPal. You get 3 free receipt scans, typing a bill in by hand is always free, and after the free scans it costs $9.99 a year or $24.99 lifetime. No account is needed, friends do not need the app and scanning needs internet. It supports receipts in 180 or more currencies without converting between them, and it has no direct percentage split.
Tab: tap the items you ate
Tab describes itself as “Snap a pic of the receipt and tap your items to claim them. Tax and tip are calculated for you.” Others who have Tab join the bill, pick their own items and see changes in real time. It is listed free with no in-app purchase, its latest version is dated June 2026, and you settle through its integrated Venmo or by recording a cash payment.
Plates by Splitwise: type each dish
Plates calls itself “a FREE app to help you split the dinner bill, figure out tax and tip”. You enter each dish, split shared items and cover up to 10 people. Its latest version, 1.4, dates from 7 December 2020.
Spliit: a free AI scan in Beta
Spliit is free and needs no account. Its homepage lists an AI receipt scan (Beta), and its privacy policy says a scanned receipt picture is sent to OpenAI. Splits go by percentage, shares or amount, and receipt images can be attached to expenses.
Splitkaro: 3 scans a month on the free plan
Splitkaro’s Premium FAQ lists receipt scanning under Premium and says Free covers 3 a month. Premium costs $4 a month or $15 a year on its US pricing page, and ₹149 a month or ₹450 a year on its India page. Splits can be equal, by shares, exact amounts, percentage or by item.
What do Settle Up and Tricount do with a receipt?
Both keep a receipt photo with the expense. Settle Up lists “Add receipt photos” on its Premium page, and Tricount lets photos attach to an expense and shows them in a Photos tab.
Where does the receipt photo go?
The apps that read a photo send it somewhere, and what each says about it differs.
- EvenOut. The photo goes to EvenOut’s server, which sends it to Google’s Gemini to be read after removing its location metadata. The receipt image is not kept.
- Spliit. Its privacy policy says a scanned receipt picture goes to OpenAI.
- Splitty. Its FAQ says “we don’t store your receipts”. Its Terms say images “are uploaded to our servers … and stored”. The two pages disagree.
- Splitwise. Its privacy statement, updated 26 May 2026, says a receipt-scanning vendor “may improve the OCR quality… by training an algorithm on receipts you provide”.
How should tax and tip be shared?
In proportion to what each person ordered. Say Ana, Ben and Cy share a $75.00 bill before tax and tip. The pizza ($24.00) went to Ana and Ben, the salad ($12.00) to Ana, the pasta ($18.00) to Ben, the wings ($15.00) to all three and the soda ($6.00) to Cy. Tax is 9% ($6.75) and the tip is 15% of the pre-tax bill ($11.25), so the bill comes to $93.00.
- Add up each person’s items. Ana has $12.00 + $12.00 + $5.00 = $29.00. Ben has $12.00 + $18.00 + $5.00 = $35.00. Cy has $5.00 + $6.00 = $11.00. Together that is $75.00.
- Find the multiplier. Tax and tip together are $6.75 + $11.25 = $18.00, which is 24% of $75.00, so each person pays their items times 1.24.
- Multiply. Ana pays $29.00 × 1.24 = $35.96, Ben $35.00 × 1.24 = $43.40 and Cy $11.00 × 1.24 = $13.64. They add up to $93.00.
An even split would be $31.00 each, so Cy would overpay by $17.36 and Ben would underpay by $12.40. In EvenOut’s free By item split, tax and tip entered as one line shared by all three add $6.00 each, giving Ana $35.00, Ben $41.00 and Cy $17.00, which is $3.36 more for Cy than the proportional split. Adding one line per person for their own share of tax and tip ($6.96 for Ana, $8.40 for Ben and $2.64 for Cy, each 24% of their items) gives the proportional totals. The split bill by item calculator does the same sums with your own items.
How do you choose?
- The dinner is one of many shared costs. EvenOut keeps a running balance for each group and friend, with By item free, scanning in Pro, no daily expense limit and no ads.
- No scanning, but items. Type them in EvenOut’s By item split, Plates or Splitty, all free.
- One scan, no cost. Tab, or the 3 free scans on Splitty.
- A few scans a month. Splitkaro’s free plan covers 3 a month, and Splitty’s yearly plan is $9.99.
If you only need a check split at the table, the apps that split a restaurant bill also cover payment requests. For how scanning works step by step, see how to scan a receipt to split a bill.
Frequently asked questions
Does receipt scanning work without an internet connection?
In EvenOut, adding an expense works offline, and receipt scanning needs a connection. Splitty's FAQ also says scanning needs internet.
What if a scan reads a line wrong?
In EvenOut, check the Items, Tax, Tip and Total review before you save, because scanned items cannot be edited. A wrong scan can be deleted like any expense and entered again by hand with the By item split.
Can a receipt splitter handle a receipt in another currency?
EvenOut's scan reads the currency from the receipt, each expense keeps its own currency and balances are kept per currency, with no conversion. Splitty supports receipts in 180 or more currencies and does not convert between them. Splitwise Pro converts currencies, and its help center says only Pro subscribers can.
