What is a bill splitting app?

4 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

A bill splitting app records shared costs, works out each person's share and keeps a running balance of who owes whom. It differs from a payment app, which moves money, and from a budget app, which tracks your own spending. EvenOut is one, with five split methods, no daily expense limit on its free plan and no ads.

Key points

  • A bill splitting app records who paid, who shares each cost and how, then keeps one running balance per person.
  • It tracks debts. A payment app moves money, and a budget app tracks your own spending.
  • EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and it splits five ways: Equally, Exact amounts, Percent, Shares and By item.
  • A guest who is not on EvenOut can be counted in from the first expense, and simplify debts cuts payments without changing totals.

What does a bill splitting app do?

It records each shared cost and works out who owes whom. For every expense you enter the amount, who paid and who shares it, and the app keeps one running balance per person.

Say Dana pays $90 for groceries and splits it equally with housemates Ben and Cy, so Ben and Cy each owe Dana $30. Later Ben pays $45 for a pizza night, also split three ways, so Dana and Cy each owe Ben $15. The app nets the two: Ben owes Dana $15, Cy owes Dana $30, and Cy owes Ben $15.

What are the five ways to split a cost?

EvenOut offers five methods, chosen for each expense:

  • Equally. $84 of takeout for 4 people is $21.00 each.
  • Exact amounts. A $100 phone bill where Ana’s line is $62 and Joe’s is $38. Type both and the app shows “All assigned”.
  • Percent. A $200 electric bill at 60% and 40% is $120 and $80.
  • Shares. A $240 cabin where one person takes 2 shares and another takes 1 is 3 shares at $80 a share, so $160 and $80.
  • By item. A $54 order: a $14 wrap, an $18 bowl and a $22 starter shared by both. The wrap eater pays $14 plus $11 and the bowl eater pays $18 plus $11, so $25 and $29. Items must add up to the total, so tax and tip go in as items.

What does simplify debts do?

Simplify debts cuts the number of payments without changing what anyone owes in total. In the housemates example, Ben owes Dana $15 and is owed $15 by Cy, so he nets to zero. Instead of three payments, Cy pays Dana $45 once.

In EvenOut it is a group setting under “Settling up”, on by default. The longer explanation is in what simplify debts means.

How is it different from a payment app or a budget app?

A payment app moves money, and a bill splitting app records who owes it. Some do both. EvenOut only records payments and does not move money. You pay by cash, transfer or another app, then record it with “Settle up” and the balance drops. It has no payment links.

As of October 2026, Venmo Groups splits an added expense into equal amounts you can edit, works out the least number of payments, and allows up to 30 people per group, where an EvenOut group takes up to 200. Splitwise Pay sends money from inside Splitwise for US residents aged 18 and over.

A budget app tracks your own income and spending. YNAB’s help guide says its options work with all bill-splitting apps, including Venmo Groups: the budget records the money, and the splitting app tracks who owes whom. For couples choosing between the two, see budget app or expense splitter for couples.

What if someone is not on the app?

You can still count them in. In EvenOut, “Add a guest” in a group takes just a name, such as “Cousin Sam”, and tracks their share from the first expense. The guest shows as “Guest · invite to claim”.

Whoever added the guest can later make a claim link, which works once and lasts 7 days. When the guest claims it, their shares move into their own account. A guest has no inbox, so a reminder goes out as a shared message instead of an email.

How do free plans compare?

Free plans differ between apps. As of October 2026, Splitwise’s free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, and its Pro plan lists charts and search. EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit, and its charts, search, repeating expenses and Splitwise CSV import are free.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bill splitting app work for just two people?

Yes. In EvenOut an expense belongs to a group or to a friendship, so two people can split costs one-on-one from the Friends tab without making a group. The friend page shows a single line, such as "Dan owes you $25.00", and the same Settle up button as a group.

Does a bill splitting app work without a connection?

In EvenOut you can add, edit, delete and restore expenses and record payments offline, and they sync when you are back online. Photo uploads, repeating expenses, receipt scanning and invites need a connection.

How does an app handle cents that do not divide evenly?

EvenOut shares the leftover cents out so the shares always add up to the total. A $50.00 expense split three ways comes out as $16.67, $16.67 and $16.66, not three amounts that add up to $50.01 or $49.99.

How much does a bill splitting app cost?

It depends on the app. EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and charts, search and repeating expenses are free. Its two paid features, receipt scanning and the assistant, cost $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year.
