Settle up: meaning and what it does in expense apps

3 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

To settle up means to pay someone the money you owe them. In an expense-splitting app, Settle up is the button that records that payment, so the balance between two people drops, and reaches zero when the amount matches. Some apps also send the money. EvenOut only records it, so you pay by cash, transfer or another payment app.

Key points

  • To settle up is to pay someone the money you owe them. Cambridge Dictionary gives that definition.
  • In an expense app, Settle up records a payment so the balance between two people goes down, or to zero when the amount matches.
  • A partial payment leaves the rest owed: owe $64.00, record $25.00, and $39.00 is still owed.
  • EvenOut's Settle up records a payment only. You send the money yourself, then record it.

What does settle up mean?

To settle up means to pay someone the money you owe them. Cambridge Dictionary defines the phrasal verb as “to pay someone the money that you owe them”, and you name the other person after “with”: you settle up with a friend, a roommate or a whole group.

The phrase also covers paying a bill. Cambridge gives “Would you like to settle up now, sir?” as an example, which asks whether the customer is ready to pay.

What does settle up mean in an expense app?

In an expense app, Settle up is the button that records a payment between two people so the balance between them changes. The app keeps a running balance from every shared expense, and a recorded payment cancels part or all of it.

Say you owe Priya $64.00 after a few shared dinners and a grocery run.

  • You pay $64.00 and record it. The balance is $0.00 and you are settled up.
  • You pay $25.00 and record it. $64.00 minus $25.00 leaves $39.00 still owed.

A partial payment is normal. EvenOut’s Settle up screen accepts one and tells you how much will still be owed afterwards.

Does settling up move the money?

That depends on the app. Splitwise’s help center says to “Tap ‘Settle up’ to pay someone back or record that you’ve been paid”, and it also lets you record a payment made outside Splitwise, such as cash or a bank transfer. As of October 2026, it can send money through Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal in the US, and through Pay by Bank in select European countries. Elsewhere the option is “Record a payment”.

EvenOut’s Settle up only records. The screen reads “You paid Priya”, with the amount on a keypad, balance cards such as “You owe Priya” that fill the amount in for you, and a “Record payment” button. It then confirms with “Settled up”. EvenOut has no payment links and does not move money, so you pay however you normally would and record it afterwards. When you owe two or more people, a “Settle everything you owe” shortcut appears. A recorded payment can be deleted and restored, but not edited.

How is it different from simplify debts?

Settle up records a payment. Simplify debts changes who owes whom inside a group so fewer payments are needed, and it never changes what anyone owes in total. An IOU is the note of a debt before it is paid, and settling up is what happens when it is.

For the details and edge cases, see how settling up works. If you recorded a payment by mistake, how to undo a Splitwise settle up shows what can and cannot be cancelled there, and what an IOU is covers the other side of the same debt.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'settle up with someone' mean?

It means paying the person you owe, or being paid by them, until neither of you owes the other. The words after 'with' name the other person. Cambridge Dictionary's example is 'You buy the tickets and I'll settle up with you later', where the speaker will pay what they owe later.

Is settling up the same as paying someone back?

Not always. Paying back is sending the money. In an app like EvenOut, settling up is the record of it, so if you hand over cash and never record it, the balance still shows the debt, and anyone who checks it sees money as owed that you already paid.

Does anyone find out when I record a payment?

EvenOut sends the other person in the payment a push notification, and they can turn that off under Account, Notifications, Settlements. The payment also shows in the Activity tab under the Payments filter.
