How to undo a Splitwise settle up (and what it can't cancel)

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

To undo a Splitwise settle up recorded with Record a cash payment, open the payment record and tap the trash can icon (on the web, hover over it in Recent Activity and click the red trash can). The balance goes back. Deleting does not cancel a Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal transfer. EvenOut never moves money, and a deleted payment there can be restored.

Key points

  • A payment recorded with Record a cash payment is undone by deleting its record. The balance returns to what it was before.
  • EvenOut never moves money, so deleting a payment there leaves no transfer behind, and a deleted payment comes back with Restore.
  • Deleting the record does not cancel a Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal transfer. Cancel it through the provider, or ask the person to send the money back.
  • EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.
  • Keep the record and the money in step: if the transfer stands, leave the payment record in place. A wrong deletion is fixed by recording the payment again from Settle up.

How do you undo a payment you recorded in Splitwise?

Delete the payment record, and Splitwise takes the payment out of the balance. This covers a payment you logged with Record a cash payment, meaning money that changed hands outside Splitwise, such as cash or a bank transfer.

On mobile:

  1. Open the Activity tab, or open the group or friendship that holds the payment.
  2. Tap the payment record.
  3. Tap the trash can icon at the top right.

On the web (splitwise.com):

  1. Open Recent Activity, or open the group or friendship.
  2. Hover over the payment record.
  3. Click the red trash can icon.

Say you owed Dana $45.00 for a group dinner, and you tapped Settle up and recorded a $45.00 cash payment before you had actually handed over the cash. Your balance read $0.00. After you delete the record, it reads “you owe Dana $45.00” again, which is where you started.

What does deleting the record not cancel?

It does not cancel a transfer that already happened. As of October 2026, Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal are the in-app payment options in the US (how the Venmo link works), and Splitwise’s help article says that deleting the record of a payment made through them “will not cancel the funds transfer”. The money has been sent, and the record is only Splitwise’s note of it.

To stop or reverse the transfer itself, you go through the service that sent it. Splitwise’s article links to Venmo’s guide, Cancel a Venmo payment, and to PayPal’s guide, Cancel a PayPal payment, and gives no separate cancel steps for Splitwise Pay. Where those options are not available, Splitwise says to settle up outside the app and use the Record a payment option to update the balance, which moves no money.

If the money cannot be pulled back, ask the person to send it back, and record that payment in Splitwise when they do.

Should you delete the record if the money stands?

No. Keep the record and the money in step: if the transfer stands, the payment record should stand too.

Suppose you owed Dana $40.00, but you sent $60.00 through Venmo. Splitwise now shows Dana owing you $20.00. Deleting the record would make Splitwise say you still owe her $40.00 while she holds $60.00 of your money, which is wrong in the other direction. Leave the record, ask Dana to send back $20.00, and record that payment when she does. After that, the balance reads $0.00.

What happens to the balance afterwards, and how do you check it?

Splitwise recalculates the balance as soon as the record is gone. Open Balances in the group header, or the friend’s page, and read the line for that person.

If the number is not what you expected, two things are worth a look:

  • Simplify Debts. When it is on in a group, who owes whom can look different from what you paid, because it rearranges payments between members. It never changes anyone’s total.
  • Other changes. Anyone involved in an expense or in its group can edit or delete it, because Splitwise has no group admins. The Activity tab lists the changes, and the balance audit walks through five checks in order.

Splitwise also says Activity cannot be cleared, because it is a record of changes for the people you share expenses with, and a deletion should leave a record. Tell the other person before you delete a payment, since their balance moves too.

What if you delete the wrong payment?

Record it again from Settle up, with the same amount and the same people. Restoring a deleted expense is a separate case that Splitwise documents, and the steps for that are in edit, delete and restore an expense in Splitwise.

How does EvenOut handle a payment you recorded by mistake?

EvenOut records payments only and never moves money, so deleting one can never leave a transfer behind. A recorded payment can be deleted (“Delete this payment?”), and its page then reads “This payment was deleted” with a “Restore” button, so a payment deleted by mistake can be brought back from its own page. It cannot be edited, so a wrong amount means deleting the payment and recording a new one.

Who can edit expenses is a group setting. The owner picks “Who can edit”: “Everyone” or “Only their own”, where people change only what they added or paid for. Splitwise has no group admins or special permissions.

EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise’s free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.

What to do next

Delete the record if the money did not move, and leave it if the money did. Check Balances once, and tell the other person what you changed. For the meaning of the button itself, see settle up. To bring a Splitwise group over with its history, move a Splitwise group to EvenOut with the CSV import, which is free.

Frequently asked questions

What if I settled up with the wrong person?

If you only recorded the payment (cash, or a transfer made outside Splitwise), delete that record so the wrong person's balance goes back, then record the payment to the right person from Settle up. If the money already moved through Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal, ask them to send it back and record their payment to you, then pay the right person.

Will the other person see that I deleted a payment record?

Splitwise says Activity cannot be cleared, because it is a record of changes that provides transparency for the people you share expenses with, and a deletion should leave a record. Their balance moves too, so tell them before you delete it.

Does deleting a Venmo payment record cancel the Venmo payment?

No. Splitwise says deleting the record will not cancel the transfer. Its article points to Venmo's own guide, Cancel a Venmo payment, and to PayPal's guide, Cancel a PayPal payment. For Splitwise Pay it gives no separate cancel steps.
