Does Splitwise convert currency? What Pro changes

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

Not on the free plan. As of October 2026, Splitwise keeps each currency as its own balance, and changing an expense's currency only changes the label. Converting everything into one currency is a Splitwise Pro button that applies the market rate at that moment to every expense in the group, settled ones included. EvenOut does not convert either.

Key points

  • As of October 2026, Splitwise keeps balances in each currency separate by default. Changing an expense's currency only changes the label.
  • Converting a group to one currency is a Splitwise Pro button. It converts every expense, settled ones included, and cannot always be reversed.
  • On a trip, you can log each expense in the currency paid and settle each currency, or agree one rate and net the balances with a single payment.
  • EvenOut does not convert currencies. Each expense has its own currency and balances are kept per currency.

Does Splitwise convert currency on the free plan?

No. As of October 2026, Splitwise keeps balances in each currency separate by default. Its help center gives the example “You owe $12.45 and you are owed £8.72”. Splitwise’s home page lists 100+ currencies among its core features.

Changing an expense’s currency does not convert it. You tap the currency symbol next to the amount when you add or edit an expense or payment, and Splitwise says that “only changes the currency label on the expense.” A $50.00 expense switched to euros reads €50.00. New expenses start in the last currency used in that group or friendship.

Simplify Debts follows the same rule. It works within each currency separately and does not combine or convert, so a group with two currencies gets a simplified set of payments in each.

What does the Pro Convert button do?

Splitwise Pro adds a “Convert to [your default currency]” button, and only Pro subscribers can use it. As of October 2026, Splitwise’s help center says it behaves like this:

  • It shows up when needed. The button appears when the group or friendship holds expenses or balances in a currency other than your default.
  • It converts everything. Every expense in the group or friendship is converted at the current market exchange rate, settled ones included.
  • It can change other people’s balances. Everyone who shares those expenses sees the result, whether or not they have Pro.
  • It does not cover later expenses. An expense added afterward in another currency stays as it is until someone taps the button again.
  • It may not be reversible. Emailing support may undo it, but Splitwise says that is not always possible.

The rate is the mid-market rate from Open Exchange Rates at the moment you tap. Splitwise suggests using the button only when the group is ready to settle up, after checking that the default currency is the one you want. A yearly plan’s Trip Pass grants Pro features to a trip group’s members for 30 days, which is covered in what the Splitwise Trip Pass includes.

What can a trip do about two currencies?

You have three options, and only the third needs Pro.

Say you owe Jo €120.00 for hotel nights Jo paid, and Jo owes you $45.00 for airport rides you paid at home. Splitwise keeps them as two separate balances.

  1. Log in the currency paid and settle each currency. You pay Jo €120.00 and Jo pays you $45.00, and each is recorded as a payment in its own currency. That is two transfers.
  2. Agree one rate and net the balances. Pick the rate once, from one named source on the day you settle, and write it down. At €1 = $1.10, your €120.00 is $132.00. Subtract the $45.00 Jo owes you and you send Jo $87.00. Record a €120.00 payment from you and a $45.00 payment from Jo, so both lines clear, while only the $87.00 moves.
  3. Have a Pro member convert the group. That uses Splitwise’s market rate at the moment of the tap instead of a rate you chose.

The one-source rule matters. If one of you used a rate of $1.12, your €120.00 would be $134.40 and the payment $89.40, which is $2.40 more than at $1.10. Splitwise’s in-app payments also have currency limits: as of October 2026, the PayPal and Venmo integrations in the US use USD balances, and Pay by Bank in select European countries does not support cross-currency payments.

Does EvenOut convert currency?

No. EvenOut does not convert currencies anywhere. Each expense can be in its own currency: tap the currency chip next to the amount. Balances, settle up and simplify debts are kept per currency, and the Balances block shows a separate line for each one.

A group made in EvenOut starts in USD and has no group-level currency setting, so you pick the currency on each expense instead. The headline totals on the Groups list add different currencies together as plain numbers, so on a two-currency trip read the separate lines under Balances. A Splitwise import takes each currency from the file.

If you need everything converted into one currency, Splitwise Pro does that and EvenOut does not. As of October 2026, Splitser also lists real-time currency conversion. The first two options above work the same way in EvenOut: log each expense in the currency paid, and record a payment in each currency when you settle, using the currency chip on the Settle up screen. Split expenses in two currencies without converting walks through the per-currency approach in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Splitwise exchange rate the same as my bank's rate?

Splitwise uses the mid-market rate from Open Exchange Rates, the rate banks charge each other. Banks add their own fees on top, so card or ATM rates abroad can differ a little. Because rates move, converted amounts may also differ slightly from what you paid, and Splitwise says converting several times during a trip can keep them closer.

What should I do if I converted a group by mistake?

Email support@splitwise.com right away. Splitwise says support may be able to revert the conversion, but that is not always possible, especially after more than one conversion. Because the button also changes settled expenses and other people's balances, tell the group before you tap it.

Can I set my own exchange rate in Splitwise?

Not with the Convert button, which uses the mid-market rate at the moment you tap it. If your group agreed on a different rate, log the expenses yourselves in one currency using that rate, and put the original amount and the rate in the description so anyone can check the math later.

Does EvenOut keep the currencies when I import a Splitwise group?

Yes. The import reads each expense's and payment's currency from the Splitwise file, and balances stay per currency in the new group. The original split methods, percentages and notes are not recovered, and categories only map in part.
