How to change currency in Splitwise: per expense and default
Quick answer
In Splitwise, tap the currency symbol next to the amount on an expense or payment and pick a currency. That changes only the label, not the amount. Your account default is separate: Account, Edit on mobile, or Your account on the web. EvenOut tracks each expense in its own currency, with balances kept per currency.
Key points
- A trip means many expenses. EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.
- EvenOut's spending charts are free and show a chip for each currency a group uses. Search is free too. Splitwise lists charts and search as Pro, as of October 2026.
- EvenOut tracks each expense in its own currency, from a list of 154, and keeps balances per currency. It has no group currency setting and no conversion.
- In Splitwise, changing an expense's currency relabels it. An $84.00 dinner becomes 84.00 in the new currency, not a converted amount.
- Your Splitwise default currency is a separate setting, and existing expenses keep their currency. Converting amounts is a Pro button, as of October 2026.

How do you change the currency on one Splitwise expense?
Tap the currency symbol next to the amount and pick a currency from the list. You can do it when you add an expense or payment, and when you edit one.
- Start a new expense or payment, or open the one you want to fix.
- Tap the currency symbol next to the amount.
- Select the currency from the list and save the expense as usual.
This only changes the currency label on the expense. It does not convert the amount. Say three friends split an $84.00 dinner in Lisbon and it was saved in dollars because the group’s last expense was in dollars. Edit the expense to euros and it reads 84.00 in euros, with each of the three shares still at 28.00. If you want the euro amount the restaurant actually charged, type that amount yourself.
How do you change your default currency in Splitwise?
Your default currency is an account setting, separate from the currency on any single expense.
- Mobile: open the “Account” tab, tap “Edit”, pick your currency and tap “Save changes”.
- Web: click your name, then “Your account”, pick your currency and click “Save”.
Expenses you already added keep the currency they have. The default is also the currency Splitwise Pro’s convert button converts into, as described below.
How do you change the currency for a whole group?
Pick the new currency on your next expense, and the expense after it starts in that currency, because a new expense in a group or friendship starts in the last currency used there. Nobody has to touch the older expenses.
Those older expenses stay as they were. A group that has both $84.00 and €60.00 expenses keeps both, and balances stay separate per currency. You see them as separate lines, for example “You owe $12.45 and you are owed £8.72”. Simplify Debts works within each currency separately, so it never nets dollars against euros.
How do you convert amounts instead of relabeling them?
Conversion is a Splitwise Pro feature. As of October 2026, Pro adds a “Convert to” button that converts every expense in a group or friendship into your default currency, settled ones included. Three things to know before you tap it:
- It uses the mid-market rate from Open Exchange Rates at the moment you convert.
- Converting settled expenses can change other people’s balances.
- Later expenses need another tap, and Splitwise says reversing a conversion by emailing support “isn’t always possible”.
Say your default currency is euros and the rate is 0.92 euros per dollar. Relabeling the $84.00 dinner gives 84.00 in euros. Converting it gives 84.00 × 0.92 = 77.28 euros. The two are different amounts, which is why relabeling an old expense that was entered in the wrong currency is not the same fix as converting it. What Pro’s conversion does and does not do goes through the details.
What is a clean setup for a trip abroad?
Because each new expense starts in the last currency used, a trip needs only a few deliberate changes:
- Leave your account default on your home currency.
- On the first expense in the new country, change the currency to the local one. Every later expense in that group then starts in it.
- When you pay for something in your home currency mid-trip, change the currency for that one expense. The next expense starts in your home currency too, so switch it back.
- At the end, read each currency’s balance on its own. Say the group ends with “You owe €48.50 and you are owed $12.00”. Those are two separate balances, and only Pro’s convert button turns them into one currency.
How does EvenOut handle currency?
EvenOut tracks each expense in its own currency and keeps balances per currency. It has no group currency setting and does not convert, so you pick the currency on each expense.
- No daily limit: the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise’s free plan allows up to 4 expenses each day, as of October 2026.
- Charts and search: both are free. The spending charts, per group or per friend, show a currency chip when more than one currency is in use. Splitwise lists charts and search as Pro, as of October 2026.
- On the expense: tap the currency chip next to the amount, for example “USD”, and choose from 154 currencies, 16 of them pinned.
- Balances: balances, settle up and simplify debts are kept per currency, as separate lines under “Balances”.
- New groups: a group made in the app starts in USD, and there is no setting to change a group’s currency.
- Default currency: Account, then “Default currency”, is your profile default, and it is used to start expenses with a friend.
For most trips, log each expense in the currency you paid. EvenOut keeps a balance per currency on the free plan, with no daily expense limit. If you need every balance converted into one currency, that is a Splitwise Pro button and EvenOut does not convert. How to split expenses in two currencies without converting shows how that works out when the trip ends.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my Splitwise balances show two currencies?
Balances stay separate per currency, so you can see a line such as "You owe $12.45 and you are owed £8.72". Simplify Debts also works within each currency separately and does not combine or convert them.
Why does a new Splitwise expense open in the wrong currency?
New expenses default to the last currency used in that group or friendship. Pick the right currency on the next expense you save, and the expense after that starts there.
Does EvenOut convert currencies?
No. EvenOut tracks each expense in its own currency and keeps balances per currency, with 154 currencies to pick from. If you need everything converted into one currency, Splitwise Pro has a convert button.
Which currency do imported Splitwise expenses have in EvenOut?
Each imported expense and payment keeps its own date and currency from the Splitwise file, so a group that mixed dollars and euros stays mixed.
