How to request money on Zelle and who can receive it
Quick answer
To request money on Zelle, open Zelle in your bank or credit union's app, choose to request money, enter the person's email or U.S. mobile number, an amount and a memo, then confirm. Requests can only be sent to people who are already enrolled in Zelle. If a friend is not enrolled, you can send money to them, but you cannot request it.
Key points
- Zelle lives inside your bank or credit union's app or online banking. Both people need an eligible checking or savings account.
- Enter the person's email or U.S. mobile number, an amount and a memo, then confirm. Choose request, not send, when you are the one owed.
- Requests can only go to enrolled Zelle users. A payment you send to someone who is not enrolled expires after 14 days.
- Your bank or credit union sets the sending and receiving limits, so ask them. Zelle says there are typically no fees for consumers.

How do you request money on Zelle?
Zelle works through your bank or credit union’s app or online banking, and Zelle says it is in over 2,400 of them. Both people need an eligible checking or savings account. The steps are below.
- Open your bank or credit union’s app or online banking and find Zelle.
- Choose to request money.
- Enter the person’s email address or U.S. mobile number.
- Enter the amount and a memo that says what it is for.
- Review the details and confirm.
Zelle says you can “send, request, or receive money” with the same service, so check that the screen says request before you confirm. A payment sent by mistake is a different problem, and whether you can cancel a Zelle payment depends on whether the other person is enrolled.
Who can you request money from?
Only people who are already enrolled in Zelle. Zelle’s homepage says, “Payment requests can only be sent to enrolled Zelle users.”
That rule has a catch for the person who is owed money. If your friend has not enrolled, you can send money to their email or mobile number, but that moves your money to them, which is the opposite of what you want. The person gets an email or text, and if they do not enroll within 14 days the payment expires and the money comes back to you. None of that gets you paid. Ask your friend to enroll through their bank, or use another way to ask.
For a comparison with an app that can request anyone by name, username, phone or email, see Zelle vs Venmo.
What does it cost, and how much can you ask for?
As of October 2026, Zelle says there are typically no fees for consumers to send or receive money, and it recommends confirming with your bank or credit union. For sending and receiving limits, Zelle tells you to contact your bank or credit union directly, so the limit is the one your bank sets.
That matters when the amount is large. Before you ask a roommate for a month of rent through Zelle, check the limit with your bank, and ask your roommate to check theirs. Zelle vs Venmo for rent goes through that case.
How do you split a bill with Zelle requests?
You work out each share first, then send a request to each person. Zelle’s homepage gives splitting the cost of late-night study break pizza as an example of what to use it for.
Say you paid $135 for a surprise party order shared by three people. Each share is $135 divided by 3, which is $45. You send a request for $45 to each of the two friends, with the memo “Party order, your share $45”. Your own $45 stays with you. If one friend is not enrolled, that request cannot be sent, and the other friend’s can.
What happens if a request goes unpaid?
The 14 days Zelle gives are for money you send to someone who has not enrolled yet. They are not a deadline for a request, so do not read them as one.
Follow up yourself. Put the amount and the reason in the memo, and send a short message if a few days pass. How to politely remind a friend to pay you back has wording that does not sound like a demand.
Where does EvenOut fit?
A Zelle request needs your friend to be enrolled. In EvenOut, “Add a guest” tracks the share of someone who is not on EvenOut yet, and you invite them later, so you can log the $45 now and settle it when they are ready.
EvenOut records the payment and does not move money, so you still collect through your bank’s Zelle, then record it under Settle up to bring the balance down.
Frequently asked questions
How do I avoid sending money when I meant to request it?
Read the screen title and the button before you confirm, and check that both say request. A payment to an enrolled user goes straight to their bank account and cannot be canceled. For a new recipient, Zelle advises reviewing the displayed name before sending money.
Does Zelle ever charge a fee?
Typically not for consumers. As of October 2026, Zelle cites a Q1 2026 survey in which 99.40% of linked consumer accounts charged no fee to send, receive or request. That leaves some accounts that do, so confirm with your bank or credit union before you rely on it.
What if my friend's bank does not offer Zelle?
Zelle says its network of participating banks and credit unions is always growing and points people to its Get Started page for the full list. Both people need an eligible checking or savings account, and Zelle works through a participating bank or credit union. If your friend's bank is not on the list yet, pick another way for them to pay you.
Does EvenOut send Zelle requests?
No. EvenOut does not move money and does not link to Zelle or your bank. It keeps the record of who owes what, you ask for the money through your bank's Zelle, and you record the payment under Settle up.
