Paying back and requests

How to politely remind a friend to pay you back

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

Remind them once your date has passed. Send a light nudge after a few days, a specific reminder with the amount and a new date about a week later, and a clear last message a week after that. Then stop. EvenOut's free Remind button works from the balance itself, so you need no open payment request first.

Key points

  • EvenOut's Remind button is free and works from the balance, so you do not need to have sent a payment request first.
  • EvenOut reminders go as a message you share or an email, at most one a day per person per group or friend, and the shared message also works for a guest who is not on the app.
  • Use three messages at most: a light nudge after a few days, a specific reminder about a week later, then a clear last message.
  • From the second message on, repeat the amount, the reason and a date, so the friend does not have to ask.
  • Venmo and PayPal reminders start from the request you already sent. After the last message, stop reminding and decide what to do about the amount.

Should you remind a friend who owes you money?

Yes. Once the date you gave has passed, a reminder is a normal part of being paid back. A short message that repeats the amount and the reason costs the friendship less than waiting and getting quietly annoyed. What matters is how many messages you send and what each one says.

What does a three-step reminder ladder look like?

Count from the date in your first ask. Say a friend, Dana, owes you $68 for concert tickets you bought.

  1. Day 3: a light nudge. It assumes the friend forgot and asks for nothing sharp.

Hi Dana, no rush, just keeping my list straight. I still show the $68 for the concert tickets as open.

  2. About day 10: a specific reminder. It holds the amount, the reason, a new date and the way to pay.

Hi Dana, following up on the $68 for the concert tickets. Could you send it by Friday? Venmo or cash both work.

  3. About day 17: a clear last message. It says this is the last reminder, gives one date and leaves a door open.

Dana, this is my last reminder about the $68 for the tickets. I would like it settled by Sunday. If that is a problem, tell me and we can work out a plan.

Each message is two or three sentences, goes to the friend privately and uses the same channel as your first ask. The tone gets firmer because the information gets more specific, not because the wording gets sharper.

When do you stop reminding?

Stop after the third message. A fourth reminder is no longer a reminder, and it makes the friend defend themselves instead of paying you. After the last message, wait for the date you gave, and if nothing arrives, the next step is a decision about the money, not another message. What to do when a friend owes you money and won’t pay covers that step.

Never send two reminders on the same day, and never send one in front of other people.

What does each tool’s reminder do?

EvenOut, Venmo and PayPal each have a remind action. As of October 2026, EvenOut’s is free and works from the balance, while Venmo’s and PayPal’s work on a request you have already sent.

Tool Where it is What it does
EvenOut “Remind {name}” from a “{name} owes you” row, the group menu or the friend page “Share a message” or “Email via EvenOut”, each with a settle-up link. Free. One per person per group or friend per day
Venmo Me > Transactions > Pending Lists unfulfilled requests. Remind sends the person a new notification. You can also delete the request. Venmo describes this for requests created with Split
PayPal Activity, open the request, Remind, Send a reminder Sends a reminder. The help page caps manual invoice reminders at 2 per invoice within 24 hours

A tool’s reminder does not replace your own message. If you want the friend to see the reason and a date, send your own line as well.

How does EvenOut’s reminder work?

EvenOut’s “Remind {name}” opens a sheet that reads “{name} owes you in {group}”. You pick one of two ways to send it.

  • Share a message opens your phone’s share sheet with a prefilled message and a settle-up link, so you can send it in the chat you already use.
  • Email via EvenOut sends a friendly email with the amount and a settle-up link.

You can reach it from the “{name} owes you” row, from the group menu under “Send a reminder”, or from the friend page. Reminders are free, and the amount comes from the balance EvenOut already keeps, so there is no request to create first. EvenOut allows one reminder per person per group or friend each day (“One nudge a day keeps it friendly”). The email also stops if the person has turned off reminders in their notification settings.

“Share a message” also works for a guest, someone you added to the group who is not on EvenOut yet and has no inbox for the email. A reminder from EvenOut is an email or a message you share, not a push notification. EvenOut does not move money, so the friend pays through their own app or in cash, and you record it with “Settle up”.

What to do next

Look at what you are owed today and send the message that matches how long it has been: the nudge, the specific reminder or the last message. If the amount is already in EvenOut, “Remind {name}” starts the message from the balance, and “Settle up” records the payment when it arrives. For the very first ask, see how to ask a friend for money back, and for wording you can paste, the text message templates have a version of each step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remind a friend in a group chat?

Send reminders privately. A group chat shows everyone who has not paid, which puts one friend on the spot. If the amount came from a group expense, one neutral message with the total and each person's share, sent before anyone pays, is the exception.

What if the friend replies but still does not pay?

Write down the day they promised and count from it. A promise missed once gets the specific reminder. A promise missed twice gets the last message.

How should I word a reminder for a small amount like $12?

Skip the nudge and send the specific one: the amount, the reason and a day. For $12 that can be one line, such as 'Quick one, I still have you down for $12 for the parking, could you send it by Friday.'
