How to split a hotel room cost between friends

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

A hotel rate is per room per night, so work out what each room costs, then decide whether rooms pay their own way or everyone pays equally. For 2 rooms, 3 nights and 5 people on a $1,452 bill, an equal split is $290.40 each, while paying by room is $275.00 in the 3 person room and $313.50 in the 2 person room.

Key points

  • Hotel rates are quoted per room per night. Resort fees and taxes follow the room. An extra-person charge follows the guest who triggers it.
  • Two clean ways to split: equal per head across all rooms, or by room, where each room's cost is shared by the people in it.
  • Charge an extra-person fee to whoever creates it. In the example it is $60 plus 10% tax, or $66, for the third person in one room.
  • A card hold for incidentals is not a cost. Track it as pending and confirm the final charge at checkout.

Why is a hotel room different from splitting a meal or a rental?

The rate belongs to the room, not to a person. Up to the room’s occupancy, it costs the same whether one person or two sleep in it. Four lines matter:

  • The room rate. Quoted per room per night.
  • An extra-person charge. Some hotels charge for each guest above a set number in a room, so check the occupancy on your booking.
  • A resort or facility fee. Charged on top of the rate. The FTC’s own guidance gives a $199 nightly rate with a mandatory resort fee of $39 per day as an example.
  • Taxes. They vary by place, so take the figure from your confirmation.

Read the confirmation for how each line is charged: per room, per guest or per night. Splitting the cost is easy once you know which it is.

What does a worked example look like?

Say five friends book 2 rooms for 3 nights, and three of them share the larger room. Taxes are 10% of everything in this example.

  • Room A, 3 guests. $200 × 3 nights = $600, plus a $20 a night extra-person charge ($60) and a $30 a night resort fee ($90). That is $750.
  • Room B, 2 guests. $160 × 3 nights = $480, plus the $90 resort fee. That is $570.
  • Total. $750 + $570 = $1,320, plus $132 tax, comes to $1,452. Room A costs $825 with tax and Room B costs $627.

When each room covers its own cost, the 3 person room pays $275.00 a head and the 2 person room pays $313.50, against $290.40 for everyone under an equal split.

Method Room A, each of 3 Room B, each of 2
Equal per head across both rooms $290.40 $290.40
Each room pays its own cost $275.00 $313.50

An equal split makes the 3 person room pay $871.20 for a room that costs $825.00, and the 2 person room pays $580.80 for one that costs $627.00. That is a $46.20 shift from one room to the other. Equal per head is fair when everyone swaps beds or the rooms are alike. Paying by room is fairer when the rooms differ in size or price, because the people who share a room share its cost.

Who pays the extra-person fee, and what if everyone has a separate room?

Charge the extra-person fee to the person who creates it. Room A’s $60 fee with tax is $66. The third guest pays $66 on top of their one third of the rest: ($825 − $66) ÷ 3 = $253 each, so the third guest pays $253 + $66 = $319 and the other two pay $253 each.

A couple who share a bed pay a room’s cost between them, which is $627 for a couple in Room B. If couples and solo travelers are in the same group, decide before booking whether rooms pay their own way or everyone pays equally, and write it in the message. How the two partners divide their own room is a separate choice, and how do couples split travel expenses covers it.

If everyone has their own room, there is nothing to split. Each person pays for their room, and you only share things such as parking.

Who puts the card down, and what is the incidentals hold?

One person’s card goes on the room, and everyone else repays them. Ask at check-in whether the bill can be split across cards, because hotels differ and you should not guess at the desk. Can you split payments at hotels looks at that question.

As of October 2026, Airbnb’s help center notes that hotels booked through it may ask for a card at check-in to cover incidentals or a deposit, that the deposit minus any charges is usually released at checkout, and that the accepted forms of card hold vary by hotel policy. A hold is not a cost, so nobody owes a share of it until it turns into a real charge.

How do you track the room, the hold and the final bill in EvenOut?

Use a Trip group and keep the room and the hold as two separate entries.

  1. Tap “Add expense”, type $1,452 and choose the Hotel category. Set “Paid by” to the person whose card is on the room.
  2. For an equal split, choose “Split equally”. For a by-room split, choose “Exact amounts” and type $275.00 three times and $313.50 twice. The pill reads “All assigned” when they add to $1,452. To charge the extra person, type $253, $253 and $319 for Room A.
  3. Add the incidentals hold as a second expense with the “Pending payment” row, described as “A deposit or hold, not a final charge”, and the reason “Incidentals hold”. It stays out of the balances and shows as “on hold”.
  4. At checkout, open the hold. If it became a real charge, tap “Confirm expense” and type the final amount, and everyone’s share re-splits to match. If it was released with no charge, delete it.

If only two people ran up room service, add that as its own expense and tap Not in for everyone else, so the cost lands on the people who had it. When people arrive on different nights, the Airbnb nights calculator shows the days method, and how to split a vacation rental covers a whole house.

Frequently asked questions

Can each person pay the hotel their own share at checkout?

That depends on the hotel's policy, so ask at check-in, before anything is charged. If the answer is no, the person whose card is on the room pays the bill and everyone else repays them through the group. Record what each person owes the moment the bill is final.

What if one person leaves a night early?

The room costs the same, so the shares shift. In the 3 person room at $825 for 3 nights, each night is $275. The first 2 nights are shared by all three: 2 × $275 ÷ 3 = $183.33 each. On the third night the two who stay share $275, which is $137.50 each. The one who leaves pays $183.33, and each person who stays pays $183.33 + $137.50 = $320.83. The cents are shared out so the three add to $825.00.

Does a resort fee change the split?

It belongs in the room's cost, because it is charged on top of the rate. Read your confirmation for whether it is per room or per guest. A per room fee follows the room, and a per guest fee follows the head count. In the example, $30 a night for each of 2 rooms over 3 nights is $180 before tax.
