Airbnb cost split calculator for different stays
Quick answer
Add up everyone's nights to get the total person-nights, divide the total cost by that number, then multiply by each person's nights. A $2,310 house with nights of 5, 5, 3 and 2 is 15 person-nights at $154 each, so the shares are $770, $770, $462 and $308. A hotel room bill works the same way.
Key points
- Price per person-night = total cost ÷ everyone's nights added together. Each person pays their nights × that price.
- In the example, $2,310 over 15 person-nights is $154, so nights of 5, 5, 3 and 2 pay $770, $770, $462 and $308.
- The method matches a night by night split when the same number of people sleep there every night. When headcount swings, the two can differ by tens of dollars.
- Take the cleaning fee out and split it equally, then run the rest by nights, because the fee does not shrink for a short stay.
On this page
Price per person-night $154.00
Total person-nights 15
Person 1 pays (5 nights) $770.00
Person 2 pays (5 nights) $770.00
Person 3 pays (3 nights) $462.00
Person 4 pays (2 nights) $308.00
Person 5 (not used) $0.00
Person 6 (not used) $0.00
Show the formula
- Total person-nights = everyone's nights added together
- Price per person-night = total cost ÷ total person-nights
- Each person's share = their nights × the price per person-night, rounded to the cent so the shares add up to the total exactly
When to split an Airbnb by nights
Split by nights when people stay for different lengths of time. If everyone sleeps there for the whole stay, an equal split gives the same answer. Enter the final total from the booking receipt (rent, cleaning fee, taxes and fees) and the nights each person sleeps there, for up to six people. A slot left at 0 is ignored.
How the calculator works
It prices one person-night and charges each person for the person-nights they used.
- Add everyone’s nights to get the total person-nights.
- Divide the total cost by the total person-nights. That is the price per person-night.
- Multiply each person’s nights by that price.
Shares are rounded to the cent and any leftover cent is handed out, so the shares always add back to the total exactly.
Worked example: a $2,310 house and four guests
Say the booking is $1,950 in rent, a $150 cleaning fee and $210 in taxes, which is $2,310. Persons 1 and 2 stay all 5 nights, Person 3 stays 3 nights and Person 4 stays 2 nights. That is 5 + 5 + 3 + 2 = 15 person-nights, and $2,310 ÷ 15 = $154 per person-night.
| Person | Nights | Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Person 1 | 5 | $770 |
| Person 2 | 5 | $770 |
| Person 3 | 3 | $462 |
| Person 4 | 2 | $308 |
The four shares add up to $2,310. An equal split would be $577.50 each, which charges Person 4 $269.50 more than the nights method does.
Where the method is not exact
A house costs the same whether two or four people are in it, but this method gives every person-night the same price. The two methods agree when the same number of people sleep there each night, and they drift apart when the headcount changes. To keep the arithmetic plain, these examples spread the whole $2,310 over the 5 nights, which is $462 a night.
If Person 3 sleeps the first 3 nights and Person 4 the last 2, three people are in the house every night and the result matches the table above. If Person 3 sleeps nights 1 to 3 and Person 4 nights 1 and 2, four people are there on nights 1 and 2, three on night 3 and two on nights 4 and 5. A night then costs each person $115.50, $154 or $231.
| Person | Nights | By person-nights | Night by night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Person 1 | 5 | $770 | $847 |
| Person 2 | 5 | $770 | $847 |
| Person 3 | 3 | $462 | $385 |
| Person 4 | 2 | $308 | $231 |
The gap is $77 a person, which is 10% of what Persons 1 and 2 pay under the nights method. Night by night makes the people who stay on carry the quiet nights. Neither is wrong, so agree on one before booking. To get night by night from the calculator, run it once for each stretch with the same people and add each person’s results: nights 1 and 2 for $924, night 3 for $462, and nights 4 and 5 for $924.
Cleaning fees and other flat costs
The cleaning fee is charged once, so it does not shrink when someone leaves early. Take it out, split it equally and run the rest by nights. Without the $150 fee the bill is $2,160, or $144 per person-night. Add $37.50 to each share for the fee and the shares are $757.50, $757.50, $469.50 and $325.50, which also add up to $2,310. A refundable deposit is a hold, not a cost, so leave it out of the total.
Using it for a hotel room
Only a total and nights are needed, so a hotel bill works too. Say a $960 room for 4 nights has two people for all 4 nights and a third for 2. That is 10 person-nights at $96, so the shares are $384, $384 and $192. Take any extra-guest charge out first and give it to that person. How to split a hotel room cost covers resort fees and extra-person charges.
Common mistakes
- Counting days instead of nights. A Friday to Monday stay is 3 nights, not 4.
- Leaving out taxes and fees. Enter the final amount charged, not the nightly rate times the nights.

In EvenOut, add the booking as one expense in a Trip group, choose the “By shares” split and type each person’s nights as their shares. The pill shows the total shares and the dollars a share, here 15 shares at $154. Anyone who is not on EvenOut yet can be added as a guest.

Frequently asked questions
How do I count nights for someone who arrives on the 2nd and leaves on the 4th?
Count the nights they sleep in the house, which is 2 here: the 2nd and the 3rd. A person who visits for the day and sleeps elsewhere enters 0 and pays nothing toward the stay. If the group wants a day visitor to chip in for the use of the house, agree a flat amount and log it as its own expense.
What if the nightly rate is higher on weekends?
Run the calculator once for each block of nights and add each person's results. Say 2 weekend nights cost $800 and 3 weekday nights cost $750. Persons 1 and 2 stay all 5 nights and Person 3 only the 3 weekday nights. The weekend block is $800 over nights of 2 and 2, so $400 each. The weekday block is $750 over nights of 3, 3 and 3, so $250 each. Persons 1 and 2 pay $650 each and Person 3 pays $250, which adds to $1,550.
Does the person who booked pay a share too?
Yes. They enter their own nights like everyone else. They are only the person who fronted the money. In the example, if Person 1 puts the $2,310 on a card, the other three owe Person 1 $770 + $462 + $308 = $1,540 between them, and Person 1 keeps their own $770.
