How to split rent in Splitwise with unequal rooms

6 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

In Splitwise, add the rent as one expense, tap "equally" in the line "Paid by [you] and split [equally]", and choose By shares with each room's square feet as the shares. Then tap the calendar icon or date field and set it to repeat monthly. As of October 2026, free accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day, which roommates who also log groceries can reach.

Key points

  • Splitwise's By shares option takes square feet directly, so a $2,520 rent over rooms of 150, 120 and 90 square feet comes to $1,050, $840 and $630.
  • Set the rent to repeat monthly from the calendar icon (or the date field on the web). It keeps repeating until you stop it.
  • A new rent amount on the latest repeat applies to future months only. Shares are ratios, so 150, 120 and 90 still split a higher rent correctly.
  • Free Splitwise accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day, and combining entries is the free fix. EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit.

How do you split rent unequally in Splitwise?

Add the rent as an expense and change the split from equal to shares, percentages or exact amounts. On mobile it takes seven steps, and the web steps are nearly the same.

  1. Tap “Add expense” (on the web, click “Add an expense” at the top of the screen).
  2. Enter a description such as “Rent” and the amount.
  3. Choose the group and who paid, which is whoever pays the landlord.
  4. Tap “equally” in the phrase “Paid by [you] and split [equally]”. On the web, click it.
  5. On mobile, choose from the options shown or tap “More options” to split unequally. Pick By shares.
  6. Type a number of shares for each roommate.
  7. Save. Everyone’s balance updates when you do.

Splitwise describes shares as assigning “a number of shares to each person”. That is all you need for rent, because the shares can be the size of each room.

Why use shares for rent when the rooms differ?

Shares let you type the square feet and skip the division. Say three roommates share a $2,520 apartment with bedrooms of 150, 120 and 90 square feet. That is 360 square feet in total, so the rent is $2,520 ÷ 360 = $7.00 per square foot. Typing 150, 120 and 90 as shares gives $1,050, $840 and $630, which add back to $2,520.

The other two ways to split by room make you do more work.

Method What you type for the three rooms When the rent goes up
By shares 150, 120, 90 The same numbers still fit
By percentage 41.67, 33.33, 25 The same numbers still fit
By exact amounts $1,050, $840, $630 All three amounts are out of date

Percentages need rounding, because 150 ÷ 360 is 41.666 and so on. Exact amounts mean redoing the math each time the landlord raises the rent.

Say the rent rises to $2,640. With shares unchanged, $2,640 ÷ 360 is about $7.33 a square foot, and the rooms pay $1,100, $880 and $660. The big room pays $50 more, the middle room $40 and the small room $30, and the shares are the same three numbers. For how to measure the rooms and take a common-space share off first, see how to split rent by room size. If incomes drive the split instead, how to split rent based on income gives the formula.

How do you make the rent repeat every month?

Tap the calendar icon on mobile, or click the date field on the web, while you add or edit the expense. Then pick monthly. The other choices are weekly, fortnightly (every other week) and yearly.

Splitwise says a recurring expense posts within the same hour it was originally added and repeats indefinitely unless you stop it or remove an involved member from the group. You can also choose an email notice before each one posts, which goes to every member on the expense.

  • Raise the rent. Edit the latest entry in the group and change the amount. Splitwise says the new amount applies to future repeats and does not affect past expenses.
  • Stop it. On mobile, open the latest entry, tap the calendar icon and switch the repeat to “Just this once”. On the web, open it and click “Cancel future recurrences”.
  • See all of them. Only the web app lists every recurring expense in one place. On mobile, tapping an entry shows lines such as “Repeats monthly” and the next date.

Over a year, the 150 square foot room pays 12 × $1,050 = $12,600. The three rooms together pay 12 × $2,520 = $30,240.

How does the 4 expenses a day limit affect roommates?

As of October 2026, Splitwise says free users can add up to 4 expenses each day. Roommates who log groceries and bills as well as the rent can reach that on a busy day.

Say one person catches up on a Saturday: a $96.30 grocery run, a $27.15 hardware store trip, a $41.80 pizza and the $142.60 electric bill. That is 4 entries, which just fits. Add the $18.20 dish soap and paper towels from a second store and the fifth one is over the cap.

Splitwise names three ways through: wait until the limit resets, ask a friend to add the expense as paid by you, or subscribe to Pro, which removes it. A fourth way costs nothing: combine entries that have the same payer and the same split. The grocery, hardware and dish soap runs can become one “Household run” for $141.65 if you paid for all three and split each equally. Put the pieces in the description, such as “groceries 96.30, hardware 27.15, soap 18.20”, so nobody loses the detail.

Do not combine entries that different people paid for or that were split differently, because the balances would come out wrong. The daily limit guide has the full list of options.

How does EvenOut split the same rent?

EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and its Shares split takes the same square feet.

  1. Make a group of the type Household (“Rent and bills”) and add your roommates.
  2. Add an expense for $2,520.00, tap the “Paid by you” chip if someone else pays the landlord, and open the split chip, which reads “Split equally”, and choose “Shares” in the “How to split” sheet.
  3. Type 150, 120 and 90. The sheet shows each person’s dollar share under their name.
  4. Open “Photo, repeat, pending or note” and choose “Repeat”, then “Monthly”. EvenOut shows the next date, in the form “Next one Nov 5. EvenOut adds it for you.” The expense you save is the first one.

Setting up a repeat needs a connection. EvenOut repeats weekly, monthly or yearly, with no fortnightly option and no end date. Each month’s rent is added as a normal expense with the same payer and split. When the rent changes, open “Repeating expenses” from the group menu, choose “Stop repeating” and add the new one. The old ones stay.

If the rent already lives in Splitwise, the history can come over for free. Moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut explains the import, which rebuilds balances but not the original split method.

What should you do next?

Measure the rooms the same way, write the square feet next to each name, and enter them as shares once. Set the repeat, then check the first month’s posting. If you also log shared groceries and bills, count your busiest day. When it is more than 4, either log them in one entry or look at the best apps to split bills with roommates for a plan without a daily cap. What expenses roommates should split helps you decide which of those bills belong in the group at all.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to a repeating rent expense when a roommate moves out?

Splitwise says a recurring expense repeats until you stop it or remove an involved member from the group. Removing someone needs their balance cleared first, so record a payment, then set up the rent again for the people who remain.

Can one roommate change the rent expense without asking?

Yes. Splitwise says it has no group admins or special permissions, and anyone involved in an expense or its group can edit or delete it. Agree in the group chat before anyone edits the rent, and review Recent Activity (Activity on mobile) if a number looks wrong.

Do all roommates get a reminder before the rent posts?

Only if you turn the reminder on. When you set the repeat you can choose an email notice before each one posts, and it goes to every member on the expense.

Should rent be one expense or two?

One is simpler. Use two if the group takes a share out for common space first: one expense split equally for that part and one By shares expense for the bedroom part, as the room size guide explains.
