Splitwise daily expense limit: 4 a day, and what to do about it
Quick answer
EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and it imports a Splitwise group's history for free. Splitwise's free plan lets you add up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026. If you stay on Splitwise, wait for the reset, ask a friend to add the rest, combine expenses, or subscribe to Pro, which removes the cap.
Key points
- EvenOut has no daily expense limit on its free plan and no ads. Charts, search and recurring expenses are free, and receipt scanning and the assistant are its only paid features.
- Free Splitwise accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026. Splitwise Pro removes the limit.
- Export one group at a time from Splitwise, then import the file under Account in EvenOut. The import is free.
- If you stay on Splitwise, combining expenses that share a payer and a split uses fewer of the 4 daily expenses.

How many expenses can you add on Splitwise’s free plan?
As of October 2026, free Splitwise accounts can add up to 4 expenses each day. Splitwise describes it as a daily expense limit on its free tier, and its Pro plan removes the cap. Splitwise can change the limit, so check the number in its help article.
What can you do when you hit it?
Splitwise points to three ways through the limit. There is a fourth.
- Wait for the reset. You can add more expenses as soon as the daily limit resets. This works when you are behind by one or two items.
- Ask a friend to add them. Your friend opens the add expense form and taps “you” in the “Paid by you and split equally” line. That records the expense as paid by you.
- Subscribe to Splitwise Pro. It removes the limit right away. Pro also adds receipt scanning and itemizing, charts, expense search, currency conversion, default splits and an ad-free app.
- Combine expenses that share a payer and a split. Three coffee runs that you paid for and the group split equally can be one “Coffee” expense for the total. Do not combine items that different people paid for, or that were split differently, because the balances would come out wrong.
When does 4 a day get in the way?
It depends on how much you log. A household that records groceries and a bill or two a week will rarely reach it. A trip is different.
Say a group of five spends on seven things a day for a week: breakfast, gas, tickets, lunch, drinks, groceries and dinner. That is 49 expenses. If one person logs them all on Splitwise, the free plan covers 28 and the other 21 have to wait for a reset, be added by someone else, or be covered by Pro. Splitting the logging across the group helps, but only if everyone remembers to do it on the day. On EvenOut’s free plan there is no daily expense limit, so one person can log all 49 as they happen.
What does EvenOut’s free plan include?
EvenOut has no daily expense limit on its free plan, and no ads. These are free as well:
- Five ways to split. Equally, by exact amounts, by percent, by shares or by item, chosen for each expense.
- Charts and search. Spending charts for a group or a friend, by category and over time, and search across your expenses, offline too. Splitwise lists both under Pro.
- Recurring expenses. Set an expense to repeat weekly, monthly or yearly, such as rent or a streaming plan.
- Simplify debts. A per-group setting, on by default, that cuts the number of payments needed to settle a group without changing what anyone owes.
- Offline use. Add, edit, delete and restore expenses without a connection. They sync when you are back online.
- Guests. “Add a guest” tracks the share of someone who is not on EvenOut yet, and you can invite them later.
- Currencies. Each expense can be in its own currency, and balances are kept per currency with no conversion.
Receipt scanning and the assistant are the paid features, at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year in the US.
How do you move a Splitwise group to EvenOut?
- Export the group from Splitwise. On the web, open the group from the left sidebar, select the gear icon in the upper right and choose Export Spreadsheet. In the mobile app, open the group, scroll the menu in the group header to the right and tap Export.
- Import it into EvenOut. Go to Account, then Import from Splitwise, and choose the file.
- Check the new group. EvenOut creates one new group with the expenses and payments, keeping each one’s currency and who owes what. It suggests matches for members by name, and you pick which one is you. Anyone left on “Assign later” becomes a guest placeholder.
- Compare the balances. Open the Balances section of the new group and check your balance with each person against what Splitwise showed.
The import is free. It takes one group per file, so repeat the steps for each group. Importing the same file again opens the group you already made instead of creating a copy.
If your group regularly logs more than 4 expenses a day, moving it means there is no daily cap to work around. For a full side-by-side, see EvenOut vs Splitwise. If you are still weighing your options, the roundup of Splitwise alternatives in 2026 covers the other apps too.
