Expense splitting apps that work offline
Quick answer
In EvenOut you can add, edit, delete and restore expenses, record payments and search without signal, and your changes sync on their own. Splitwise, Tricount, Settle Up, Splid, Splittr and Splitser describe offline use too, so what matters is which actions still need a connection. EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads.
Key points
- In EvenOut you can add, edit, delete, restore and confirm expenses, record payments, comment and search without signal. Changes sync by themselves when you reconnect.
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. As of October 2026, Splitwise's free plan lets you add up to 4 expenses each day.
- Splitwise, Tricount, Settle Up, Splid, Splittr and Splitser describe offline use too, so what separates the apps is which actions still need a connection.
- EvenOut needs a connection for photo upload, repeats, receipt scanning, the assistant, import, invites, Nearby, adding a guest and Mark as complete.
- Do the connection-only steps first: add guests, share invite links and set up repeats before you lose signal.

Which expense splitting apps work offline?
All seven apps below describe offline use, so the phrase tells you little on its own. This is the wording each one uses, as of October 2026.
| App | What it says about offline | Where it says it |
|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | Add, edit, delete, restore and confirm expenses, record payments, comment and search; syncs automatically | In the app |
| Splitwise | “Offline mode” is on its free list, with cloud sync | Home page |
| Tricount | “Add expenses without a signal”, then they sync when you are back online | Offline feature page |
| Settle Up | “Works offline”, with data backed up and synchronized | App listing |
| Splid | “Works on and offline”, with an offline group option | Home page |
| Splittr | “Works offline”, with “No registration needed” | Splittr site |
| Splitser | Lists an “Offline mode” | Splitser site |
Does Splitwise work offline?
Yes. Splitwise’s home page lists offline mode and cloud sync among its free features, so offline use is not what separates it from EvenOut. The free plan is. As of October 2026 Splitwise’s free plan lets you add up to 4 expenses each day, and it lists charts, expense search and an ad-free experience as Pro features. EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and its charts and search are free. Apps with no daily expense limit covers that difference, and EvenOut vs Splitwise compares the two feature by feature.
Either way, what matters is what each app does when the signal drops.
What does “works offline” leave out?
The phrase says an app opens and takes entries without signal. It does not say which actions need a connection, or whether a group lives only on your phone. The apps give different amounts of detail.
- Splid offers “Create an offline group”, or you “activate the sync to enter expenses together”. A group you do not share online is kept only on the device. A shared group uses an access code, and Splid says there is no sign-up.
- Settle Up says it “works offline” with your data “backed up and synchronized”. Its web sign-in dialog says to sign in to allow backup and synchronization of your groups.
- Tricount says you can add expenses without a signal and they sync when you are back online.
- Splittr lists “Works offline” and “No registration needed”. Splitser lists an offline mode.
EvenOut spells the split out task by task, as the next table shows.
What can you do offline in EvenOut?
Everything that edits your own expenses and payments works without signal, and anything that needs EvenOut’s server does not. Here is the full split.
| Task | Without signal | Why or what to do |
|---|---|---|
| Add, edit, delete, restore or confirm an expense | Works | Syncs on its own |
| Record, delete or restore a payment | Works | Syncs on its own |
| Write a comment | Works | Syncs on its own |
| Search expenses | Works | Search runs on the phone |
| Create a group or a friend, edit group details, change members, leave or delete a group | Works | Syncs on its own |
| Add a photo, change a cover or a profile photo | Needs a connection | The picture has to upload |
| Set up, pause, resume or stop a repeat | Needs a connection | The server adds each repeat |
| Invite links, Nearby, Add a guest | Needs a connection | Do these before you leave |
| “Mark as complete” | Needs a connection | Saved online |
| Scan a receipt, Ask EvenOut, Import from Splitwise | Needs a connection | The photo, question or file goes to the server |
Changes made offline sync automatically when your phone reconnects. If some cannot, a banner reads “N changes couldn’t sync” with a “Retry” button. Log out warns about changes that have not synced, so read that warning before you sign out.
What should you set up before you lose signal?
Five steps cover most of what the table says needs a connection.
- Add the people. Add friends, or use “Add a guest” for someone who is not on EvenOut. You can invite them to claim their spot later.
- Share the group’s invite link. One link per group works for several people for 30 days, and it is how anyone who is not your friend joins.
- Set up repeats. A monthly rent or a subscription is a repeat, and it needs a connection to create.
- Move the old history in. Moving a Splitwise group takes one CSV file per group.
- Leave photos and receipts for later. Attach or scan them when you have signal again.
What does three days without signal look like?
Say Ana, Ben and Cleo hike for five days with a friend, Dev, and lose signal for three of them. This is a made-up trip.
On day 1, in town, Ana creates the group, adds Dev as a guest and shares the invite link with Ben and Cleo. On days 2 to 4 each person logs what they paid on their own phone, with every expense split equally four ways:
- Ana pays $64.00 for permits, so each share is $16.00.
- Ben pays $38.00 for supplies, so each share is $9.50.
- Cleo pays $26.00 for stove fuel and food, so each share is $6.50.
The three expenses add up to $128.00, which is $32.00 each. When the phones reconnect on day 5, the entries sync. Ana paid $64.00 against a $32.00 share, so she is owed $32.00. Ben paid $38.00, so he is owed $6.00. Cleo paid $26.00, so she is $6.00 short, and Dev paid nothing, so he is $32.00 short. The fewest payments that settle that are two: Dev pays Ana $32.00 and Cleo pays Ben $6.00. EvenOut’s “Simplify debts” setting, on by default, works that out. Dev is a guest with no inbox, so Ana uses “Share a message” to remind him.
How to choose
- You want offline use with no daily expense limit and no ads. EvenOut: add, edit, delete and restore expenses, record payments and search without signal, on a free plan with no daily expense limit and no ads.
- You use Splitwise and want offline. Splitwise has it too, and its free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day as of October 2026. EvenOut has no daily expense limit on its free plan.
- You are planning a trip with patchy signal. EvenOut: do the connection-only steps first. Apps to split trip expenses compares more of the trip features, and expense splitting apps compared covers the rest.
- You want to add expenses without signal and have them sync later. Tricount, Settle Up, Splitwise and EvenOut all describe that, and the table above lists which EvenOut actions need a connection.
- You want a group that exists only on your phone, with no sign-up. Splid’s offline group stays on the device until you choose to share it. EvenOut vs Splid is the comparison for that.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my changes if I stay offline for days?
In EvenOut they stay on your phone and sync automatically once you reconnect. If some cannot sync, a banner such as "2 changes couldn't sync" appears with a "Retry" button. Log out warns you about unsynced changes, so wait for the sync before you sign out.
Does working offline mean working without an account?
No, they are separate. EvenOut asks you to sign in with Google or email, and then works offline for the tasks the table on this page marks as working without signal. Splid says no sign-up is required, Splittr says no registration is needed, and Settle Up's web sign-in says it is for backup and synchronization of your groups.
Can I import a Splitwise group into EvenOut while offline?
No. The import needs a connection, because EvenOut uploads the CSV file to its server to read it. Export the group from Splitwise first, then run Import from Splitwise under Account when you have signal.
