Splitwise alternatives when friends won't sign up
Quick answer
A friend can be a guest in EvenOut, tracked by name until they claim their spot, and its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. You sign in with Google or email. As of October 2026, Splitwise needs an account from you and its free plan allows 4 expenses a day. Spliit, Splid and KittySplit ask nobody to register.
Key points
- A friend can be a guest in EvenOut with only a name, and the guest's creator can send a single-use claim link that lasts 7 days. You sign in with Google or email.
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.
- In EvenOut the owner picks who can edit, Everyone or Only their own, and a Viewer can see everything and comment without changing expenses.
- Splitwise registration asks for a name, email, phone number and password, but a friend invited by email or phone can be added to expenses before accepting.
- Spliit, Splid, KittySplit and Splitty need no account. On Spliit, anyone who has the link can read and change the group.

Do you need an account, or do your friends?
“No account” can mean two different things. One is whether you must sign up to start. The other is whether each friend must sign up before their share can be recorded. Apps answer the two separately. Splitwise needs an account from you but lets you record shares for friends who have not accepted an invite. Spliit, Splid and KittySplit ask nobody to register, and the link or code is what lets someone in. EvenOut sits between: you sign in, and a friend can be a name in the group until they decide to join.
As of October 2026, this is where each app stands.
| App | Account for you? | Account for your friends? | Free plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| EvenOut | Yes: sign in with Google or email | Not for a guest, who is a name in a group. Joining for real needs an account | No daily expense limit, no ads |
| Splitwise | Yes: registration asks for a name, email, phone number and password | Not to be added to expenses once invited. They cannot join a group on their own | 4 expenses a day |
| Spliit | No | No. Anyone with the link can read and change the group | Free, no ads |
| Splid | No sign-up | No. A group shared online uses an access code | Free download, with in-app purchases |
| KittySplit | No, not to create, use or upgrade a Kitty | No | A free Kitty takes up to 9 people |
| Splittr | “No registration needed” | “Syncs with friends”, per its site | Free download, with in-app purchases |
| Splitty | No | No. Friends do not need the app | 3 free receipt scans, then a paid plan |
| Tricount | Home page: “Try tricount without signing up” | Join by tapping a link | Home page: no ads, no daily expense cap |
EvenOut: you sign in, your friends can be guests
EvenOut asks you to sign in with Google or email, and a friend does not have to. In a group’s settings, open Members, then Add people, and choose “Add a guest”. A guest is “Someone who isn’t on EvenOut yet”, added by name, and the point is to “Track their share now and invite them later.” Guests work in groups only, not in one-on-one expenses with a friend, and adding one needs a connection.
Later, the person who added the guest can open “Invite to claim”, which makes a link and a QR code that work once and last 7 days. A new link replaces the old one. When the guest opens it and taps “Merge into my account”, their shares move to the real account, and the merge can’t be undone. A guest has no inbox, so reminders go as a shared message rather than an email.
Say six people share a weekend cabin: $660 for the cabin and $144 for groceries, both paid by you. Three friends will not install anything, so you add them as guests. Split equally, each share is $134.00 ($804 ÷ 6). You are owed $670.00 (5 × $134.00), because the two other members and the three guests each owe $134.00. The guests’ shares show in the balances from the first expense. None of this needs a paid plan: the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads.
Splitwise: your account is required, your friends’ are not
Splitwise’s privacy statement says you “will need to create an account”, and registration asks for a name, email, phone number and password. Email is required, and a phone number adds a security layer. You cannot join a group on your own: a member invites you by email, phone or “Invite via link”.
For friends who have not responded, Splitwise’s help center says people invited by email or phone can be added to expenses before they accept, indefinitely, and that Splitwise sends “one invite, one reminder, and then leave them alone”. Name-only placeholder friends can be added from Splitwise’s web app. The steps are in how to add a friend to Splitwise without their email or phone.
Which apps need no account at all?
Spliit, Splid, KittySplit, Splittr and Splitty all let you start without signing up. What each puts in place of an account is different.
- Spliit. The group link is the key. You create a group and share the link, and anyone who has it can open the group.
- Splid. Its site says “there’s no sign-up required”. You choose, group by group, whether to share online with an access code, and a group you do not share stays on your device. Splid’s version history says join codes grew from six to nine characters in March 2023.
- KittySplit. Its pricing page asks “Do I need an account?” and answers “No. Not to create a Kitty, use one, or upgrade it.” A free Kitty takes up to 9 people. Super Kitty costs €2.99 once per group, takes up to 100 people and is not a subscription. EvenOut vs KittySplit sets its caps beside EvenOut’s.
- Splittr. Its site lists “No registration needed” and “Syncs with friends”, and says everybody can enter expenses from their own device. The same site says Splittr is coming back, with new apps in the works.
- Splitty. No account is needed and friends do not need the app. It is built for one-time restaurant splits rather than recurring expenses.
Tricount: “Try tricount without signing up”, and what its sign-up asks for
Tricount’s home page says “Try tricount without signing up.” Its help center lists the Free Credit Card sign-up as personal details, a phone confirmation code, a Security Code, a Tax Identification Number and identity verification, and says newly registered users “will also get a bunq account automatically upon signup”. Existing users who skip the card enter expenses by hand.
For your friends, a person joins a tricount by tapping a link, and release notes dated 5 October 2026 say you can share what friends outside Tricount owe you without them being on the app. A tricount takes up to 50 people, including you. The two sign-up statements sit on different pages, so test the first screen a friend sees before you rely on either.
What do you give up when nobody has an account?
Accounts do some jobs quietly, and a link or code does not.
- Who can change the group. In EvenOut the owner chooses under “Who can edit” between “Everyone” and “Only their own”, and a Viewer can follow along without changing expenses. On Spliit, anyone who has the link can read the group and change it. On Splid, the data of a shared group is provided to Splid so others can view and edit it. Splitwise states it has no group admins or special permissions, so anyone involved in an expense or its group can view, edit or delete it.
- Notifications and reminders. EvenOut sends a push notification for a new expense, a payment or a comment, and a reminder goes by email or a shared message. Spliit’s author lists “No notifications, no ‘friends’ feature, no payment integrations” among the trade-offs.
- Deleting a group. On spliit.app a group cannot be deleted from inside the app, and the privacy policy says to email hello@spliit.app.
- A new device. On Spliit, a new device starts empty until you open your links again.
How do you choose?
- A group that keeps running, where some people will sign up and some will not. EvenOut. Guests are tracked by name from the first expense, and the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise invites can also be added to expenses before they are accepted, and its free plan allows 4 expenses a day.
- Reminders, notifications and edit rights matter. EvenOut, where people sign in and “Who can edit” can limit people to what they added or paid for. Spliit’s author lists no notifications, and anyone with a Spliit link can change the group.
- One trip, everyone present, and nobody will install anything. EvenOut, with everyone else added as a guest, or Spliit, Splid or KittySplit if you do not want to sign in yourself. A free Kitty takes up to 9 people.
- One restaurant bill. Splitty, because friends do not need the app.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Spliit group private if I only share the link with friends?
It is as private as the link. Spliit's privacy policy says a group is reachable through its link and nothing else: there is no directory, no search across groups and no way to list the groups on the server. Anyone who has the link can read the group and change it, so treat the link like a key and share it only with the people in the group.
Where does a Splid group live if I never share it online?
A group that is not shared online is kept only on your device, and you delete it by deleting it from the device. Sharing is a choice you make for each group, and it uses an access code. Deleting a whole shared group means emailing privacy@splid.app, and it removes the group for everyone who has access.
Do I need an account to upgrade a KittySplit group?
No. KittySplit's pricing page says you do not need an account to create a Kitty, use one or upgrade it. One person pays the upgrade, which is €2.99 once per group, and the cost is added to the Kitty as an expense that gets split like any other. It is not a subscription.
Can I invite someone to an EvenOut group with only their email address?
Not by email. Friends connect by scanning your EvenOut code or opening your invite link, and a group has an Invite with a link option that works for several people for 30 days. EvenOut never shows or sends another person's email address. Someone who is not ready to join can be a guest instead.
