Which group expense tracker holds a group your size?

EvenOut holds the largest group in this table, 200 people. A group of 12 is already too big for a free KittySplit (9 people) and Plates (10). As of October 2026, these are the member limits the apps state for one group.

App People in one group Cost
EvenOut 200 Free plan: no daily expense limit, no ads. One invite link works for several people for 30 days
Splitser 150 per list “Almost entirely free”; €0.35 per in-app payment
Tricount 50, including you Free
Venmo Groups (US) 30 $0.00 to send from a bank, balance or debit card; 3.00% by credit card
Plates by Splitwise 10 Free; splits one dinner bill
KittySplit 9 free, 100 with Super Kitty Super Kitty is €2.99 once per group

Splitwise and Settle Up are in the next table, which compares control instead of size.

Who can edit expenses, and what do charts cost?

In EvenOut the owner chooses who can edit, the charts are free and there is no daily expense limit, while Splitwise says it has no group admins and lists charts under Pro. As of October 2026, here is how the four apps that describe group controls compare.

App Who can change expenses Charts Free plan limit and ads
EvenOut Owner picks “Everyone” or “Only their own”. A “Viewer” role can follow along and comment Free. By category, person and month, for one group No daily expense limit, no ads
Splitwise Anyone involved in the expense or its group. No group admins or special permissions Pro. “Broken down by category” 4 expenses a day
Settle Up Lists read-only access as a feature Premium page lists “Charts” Free version has ads
KittySplit Read-only link with Super Kitty Per-category insights with Super Kitty No limit on expenses

“Everyone” lets any member add, edit or delete any expense. “Only their own” limits people to what they added or paid for.

EvenOut: 200 people, owner-set editing and free charts

A group in EvenOut holds up to 200 people, its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and the owner sets who can edit. Add your own friends and guests directly, or share one invite link (“Invite with a link”) that works for several people for 30 days. A guest is someone who is not on EvenOut yet: add them by name, track their share now and send a claim link later.

Five split methods are free (equally, exact amounts, percent, shares and by item), chosen per expense. So are the spending charts, search, repeating expenses and the Splitwise import. Receipt scanning and the assistant are the only paid features, at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year.

EvenOut does not convert currencies. Each expense keeps the currency you log it in, and balances are kept per currency.

Splitwise: no admins, and 4 expenses a day on the free plan

Splitwise states that a group has no admins or special permissions, so anyone involved in an expense or its group can view, edit or delete it. Free accounts can add up to 4 expenses each day and Pro removes the limit, which the Splitwise daily limit guide covers in full. Charts are Pro and “broken down by category”.

You “cannot join a group on your own”. A member invites you by email, phone or “Invite via link”. The yearly plans include one annual Trip Pass, which “can be applied to any trip group of your choosing and grants Pro features to group members for 30 days”.

Tricount: 50 people, free, owned by bunq

A tricount holds up to 50 people including you, and people join by tapping a link. The core app is free, and its terms say bunq B.V. owns and operates it. The website offers “Try tricount without signing up”, and its help center says newly registered users also get a bunq account automatically.

Its help center describes a category pie chart per tricount and says “we’re bringing the tricount insights feature back”. See EvenOut vs Tricount for the full feature grid.

Settle Up: read-only access and a per-group Premium

Settle Up groups are shared by link or QR code, and the app lists read-only access for people who should only look. Friends can view a group in a browser without downloading anything.

Group Premium covers “every member in one group”. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it is “transferable if the group is closed”. As of October 2026, a year costs $34.99 on Settle Up’s website and $39.99 in its US app listing. Split across 12 people that is about $2.92 or $3.33 each, and Settle Up’s tips page suggests adding the purchase as a group expense. The free version has ads, and Premium removes them.

Splitser: 150 people per list

Splitser, called WieBetaaltWat in the Netherlands and Flanders, allows up to 150 members per list. It splits by share or specific amount, handles recurring expenses and offline use, and shows realtime currency conversion across 150+ currencies. It exports CSV or PDF and imports Splitwise CSV files. Using it is “almost entirely free”, and in-app payments carry a €0.35 service fee per transaction.

KittySplit, Venmo Groups and Plates for smaller groups

KittySplit’s free Kitty holds up to 9 people, has no limit on expenses and needs no account to create or use. Super Kitty costs €2.99 once per group, is not a subscription, and raises the size to 100 people. It also adds multiple currencies with conversion, a read-only link and per-category insights.

Venmo Groups, in the US, holds up to 30 people. Each expense splits into equal amounts due from the other members, and amounts can be edited or members left out. Venmo works out “the least number of payments”, and members can mark payments made outside Venmo as paid.

Plates by Splitwise splits one dinner bill, with tax and tip, for up to 10 people. It is a single-bill tool rather than a running tracker for a group.

A 12-person cabin with 4 guests

Say 12 people rent a cabin for 6 nights at $3,600. Eight stay all 6 nights. Four are guests, not on the app yet, who stay for 3 nights.

  1. Check the size. Twelve people rules out a free KittySplit (9) and Plates (10). Tricount (50), Venmo Groups (30), Splitser (150) and EvenOut (200) all hold the group.
  2. Price by nights. An equal split gives everyone $300 ($3,600 ÷ 12), which charges the guests as much as people who stayed twice as long. Use one share per night instead: 8 × 6 + 4 × 3 = 60 shares, so $3,600 ÷ 60 = $60 a share. Full-stay people pay $360 and guests pay $180. Check: 8 × $360 + 4 × $180 = $2,880 + $720 = $3,600.
  3. Add the guests. In EvenOut, add each of the 4 by name as a guest and their shares count straight away. In Splitwise, friends invited by email or phone can be added to expenses before they accept. The alternatives for friends who will not sign up go further on this.
  4. Limit editing. In EvenOut the owner sets “Who can edit” to “Only their own” and gives anyone who only wants to follow along the Viewer role.

How to choose

EvenOut fits most groups: it holds up to 200 people, its free plan has no daily expense limit or ads, and the owner sets who can edit. Where your group’s need is different, use this list.

  • More than 50 people. In the size table, EvenOut (200), Splitser (150) and KittySplit with Super Kitty (100) have stated limits above 50.
  • No daily limit and no ads. EvenOut’s free plan has neither. Splitwise’s free plan allows 4 expenses a day, and Settle Up’s free version has ads.
  • The owner should decide who can edit. EvenOut has the setting. Splitwise says it has no group admins or special permissions.
  • Per-person charts without paying. EvenOut’s are free. Splitwise lists charts under Pro, and Settle Up’s Premium page lists them.
  • The group is for one trip. The best apps to split trip expenses adds trip-specific picks.
  • Nine people or fewer, no sign-up. A free Kitty in KittySplit needs no account.
  • The group pays through iDEAL or Bancontact. Splitser has in-app payments for both.
  • Everything has to convert to one currency. Tricount, Splitser, Splitwise Pro and KittySplit’s Super Kitty convert, and Settle Up lists real-time exchange rates. EvenOut keeps each currency separate.

If the daily limit or ads are what is pushing your group out of its current app, see the apps with no daily expense limit and the apps without ads. To try EvenOut with your existing history, follow the steps to move a Splitwise group to EvenOut: open Account, then Import from Splitwise, and choose the group’s spreadsheet export.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add people to a group who have no account yet?

In EvenOut, open group settings, then Members, then Add people, and choose a guest. Enter a name, track their share now, and send a claim link later (single-use, valid 7 days). Splitwise says friends invited by email or phone can be added to expenses before they accept.

Which group expense trackers move money between members?

EvenOut records a payment and moves no money, so it has no transfer fees or sending limits of its own. Splitwise Pay sends money inside Splitwise for US residents 18 and over, after identity checks. Splitser adds a €0.35 service fee per in-app payment (iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact). Settle Up describes an optional Bitcoin Lightning payment with no involvement of Settle Up.

Can EvenOut show spending charts across all my groups?

No. Charts are per group or per friend, opened from the group's round Spending charts button or the three-dot menu. The Everyone chip shows full amounts before splitting. Tapping a name shows that person's share after splitting.

Can a big Splitwise group be imported into EvenOut?

Yes, for most groups. One CSV file becomes one new EvenOut group, and a file can hold up to 2 MB, 20,000 rows and 100 members. EvenOut groups themselves hold up to 200 people, so an imported group can keep growing through the invite link.
