How to make Venmo private, including past payments
Quick answer
Open the Me tab, tap the settings gear, tap Privacy and choose Private. That sets the default for payments you send from then on. To change one payment, tap its privacy label. To hide old payments, use the hide past transactions option in the same menu. Venmo only lets you make a past payment more private, and the person you paid still sees it.
Key points
- Me tab, settings gear, Privacy, then Private sets the default for every payment you send from now on.
- One payment can be made more private when you create it or after it is sent, by tapping its privacy label.
- Past payments can only be made more private than they were at first. The Privacy menu also has an option that hides all past transactions at once.
- The other person always sees the amount, note, names and time. Group activity shows to group members whatever your setting is.

How do you make Venmo private?
Change your default privacy setting to Private, which takes four taps in the Venmo app.
- Open the Me tab.
- Tap the settings gear at the top right.
- Tap Privacy.
- Choose Private.
That sets the default for payments you send from now on. It does not rewrite payments you already sent, and the next sections cover those.
What do Public, Friends only and Private mean?
Venmo describes three levels, and the difference between them is who beyond the two of you can see a payment. As of October 2026, they work like this.
| Setting | Who can see the payment |
|---|---|
| Public | Anyone on the internet may be able to see it. The note, the names and the timestamp are shared. |
| Friends only | Your Venmo friends and the other person’s Venmo friends. The note, the names and the timestamp are shared with them. |
| Private | Not shared anywhere except your own transactions feed under the Me tab. The other person can also see it. |
What each level changes is whether other people see that the payment happened, who it was between and what the note says.
Is Venmo public by default?
As of October 2026, Venmo’s Helpful Information page says your initial default privacy setting is Public, so everyone on the internet can see your payments. Defaults can change, so open Me, the settings gear and Privacy, and read what your own account is set to before you send anything you would rather keep to yourself.
How do you make one payment private after sending it?
Tap the payment’s current privacy label and pick a more private setting. You can also choose the setting while you create the payment, which is the easiest way to keep a single payment private without touching your default.
The change only goes one way. Venmo says you can only make a past payment more private than it was originally. A payment that went out as Public can be changed to Friends only or Private. One that went out as Friends only can be changed to Private. One that went out as Private is already as private as it gets.
How do you make past payments private?
Use the option that hides all of your past transactions. Venmo puts it in the Privacy menu under Settings, so it sits in the same place as your default. Use it when you want to clean up your whole history at once, and use the per-payment change when only one or two need to move.
What stays visible when a payment is Private?
Private limits who else sees the payment, not who is in it. Three things remain.
- The other person. Everyone in the payment can always see the amount, the note, the names of sender and recipient and the timestamp.
- Group members. Venmo says your group activity is visible to other members of that group, regardless of your privacy settings. If a payment belongs to a group, the group sees it. Venmo Groups covers how those work.
- The other person’s setting. Venmo uses the more restrictive setting between payment partners. If you are on Public and the person you pay is on Private, the payment is treated as Private. The reverse is also true, so a friend on Public does not make your Private payment public.
How do you keep the note neutral?
Write the note as if the other person’s friends could read it, because on Public or Friends only they can. A note should say what the money was for and when, and leave out the history behind it.
- Instead of “Rent, again, you’re late”, write “October rent share”.
- Instead of “You still owe me from last time”, write “Groceries, Oct 4”.
If you are chasing a payment, the awkward part of the message belongs in a text to that person, not in a note anyone else may read. A running balance is also easier to keep outside Venmo. In EvenOut, the group or friend page holds the balance and the reminders, so the Venmo note only has to name the expense. EvenOut records the payment and does not move money, so you still send it in Venmo and then record it under Settle up.
What should you do next?
Open Privacy and check your default, then decide whether to hide your past transactions. For the next payment, look at the privacy label before you send it. If you collect money from friends often, how to request money on Venmo covers the request flow, and Cash App vs Venmo compares fees, limits and group tools.
Frequently asked questions
Can friends see how much I paid on Venmo?
Venmo hides dollar amounts in the feed. The note, the names and the timestamp are what a Public or Friends only payment shares with other people. The two people in the payment can always see the amount.
Who can see which payment method I used?
Only the sender. Venmo says only the sender of a payment can ever see the payment method used, so the person you paid does not see whether it came from a balance, a card or a bank account.
If I request money from several people, does each one see the same note?
Yes. The same note shows to everyone you request money from, so write it for the whole group. A line like 'Cabin, Oct 12 to 14' works for all of them, while a line aimed at one person is read by every other person on the request.
