Venmo Groups: how they work, limits and settling up

6 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

A Venmo Group lets up to 30 people track and split shared costs such as a trip or roommate bills. Create it from the Me tab, add people, and any member can add an expense, which splits equally by default and can be edited. To settle, tap Pay in the group feed, or mark a payment you made outside Venmo as paid.

Key points

  • A Venmo Group holds up to 30 people. Venmo friends are added right away, and anyone else has 30 days to accept the invite.
  • Expenses split equally by default. You can change any member's amount or leave a member out of an expense.
  • You can remove only members who are all paid up, and never the owner. An owner who wants to leave must transfer ownership first.
  • Settle by tapping Pay in the group feed, or use Mark as paid for money that moved outside Venmo, such as cash.
  • Group activity is visible to the group's members whatever your own privacy setting says.

What is a Venmo Group?

A Venmo Group is a shared list of expenses inside Venmo, for up to 30 people. Venmo describes it as a way to “manage, track, and split group expenses”, with a vacation with friends and bills shared with roommates as its examples. The group keeps a record of who paid for what, and a Pay button sits at the top of its feed for settling.

As of October 2026, Venmo’s User Agreement says you must be in the United States and have a U.S. bank account to use the Venmo services. Check that before you invite anyone who lives elsewhere.

How do you create a Venmo Group?

  1. Open the Me tab and choose Create a Group, then Get started. If you already belong to a group, open the Groups tile and choose Create a group instead.
  2. Name the group and pick an emoji.
  3. Add people. You can add up to 30.

You become the owner automatically, and you can hand ownership to someone else in the group’s Settings. To log a cost, any member opens the Groups hub on the Me tab, taps the group and taps Add an expense. Type the total, fill in “What’s this for” and tap Add expense.

How do expenses split in a Venmo Group?

Each expense splits automatically into equal amounts owed by the other members, and you can change any member’s amount or leave a member out. Venmo says it does the math so each member can settle what is due with the least number of payments. To fix a saved expense, select it in the group feed and tap the pencil.

Say six friends share a lake weekend. Ana pays the $900 cabin, Ben pays $210 of groceries and Cy pays $60 of gas. Ana also pays a $120 boat rental that Dee skips, so Dee is excluded from it and the other five owe $24 each. A full share is $150 + $35 + $10 + $24 = $219, and Dee’s is $195.

Person Paid Share Balance
Ana $1,020 $219 is owed $801
Ben $210 $219 owes $9
Cy $60 $219 owes $159
Dee $0 $195 owes $195
Eli $0 $219 owes $219
Fay $0 $219 owes $219

Only Ana is owed money, so the least number of payments is five, each to Ana: $9, $159, $195, $219 and $219, which add up to $801.

An uneven expense has two controls: change a member’s amount, or leave a member out. For a percent, shares or itemized split, work out each person’s dollar amount first and type it in.

Who can join a group, and who can be removed?

  • Venmo friends are added right away.
  • Everyone else has to accept the invite, and an invite that is not accepted expires after 30 days.
  • Removal works only for a member who is all paid up, meaning nothing is due to or from them. The owner can never be removed.
  • Coming back. The remaining members can add a removed member back at any time.

To collect from someone who is not on Venmo, send a plain request to their phone number or email. Venmo says the recipient can fulfill it by opening an account. How to request money on Venmo covers that route.

How do you settle up in a Venmo Group?

To pay what you owe:

  1. Open the Groups hub on the Me tab and select the group.
  2. Tap Pay at the top of the activity feed.

To record money that moved outside Venmo, such as cash:

  1. Open the group and tap Group summary at the top of the activity feed.
  2. In the Members tab, tap Mark as paid, then tap Mark as paid again to confirm.

When every amount is cleared in both directions, an “all paid up” message appears at the top of the feed.

What does paying cost, and which limits apply?

As of October 2026, Venmo lists sending at $0.00 from a balance, debit card or bank account, and 3.00% when you send with a credit card. If Eli pays the $219 with a credit card, the fee is $6.57.

As of October 2026, an unverified personal account also has a weekly spending limit of $299.99, so after Eli’s $219 only $80.99 is left that week. A $100 dinner share the same week would be over. Venmo weekly limit explains how the rolling week works and how to raise it.

Who can see a group’s activity?

Venmo’s privacy page says group activity is visible to group members regardless of your payment privacy setting. Your other payments follow the Public, Friends only or Private setting you chose. How to make Venmo private shows where to change it, including for past payments.

When does a separate tracker fit better?

A Venmo Group puts the list and the payment in one place, which suits one trip or one house where everyone has Venmo. A tracker fits when the group runs for months, is bigger than 30, or includes people who are not on Venmo.

EvenOut groups hold up to 200 people, the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and each expense picks its own split: equally, exact amounts, percent, shares or by item. “Add a guest” tracks the share of someone who is not on EvenOut yet, and “Simplify debts” is on by default. EvenOut records payments and does not move money, so you can pay through Venmo and then record it under “Settle up”. Venmo vs Splitwise vs EvenOut compares the three.

For a single dinner, splitting a bill on Venmo is quicker than setting up a group.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add or remove someone after the group exists?

Open the Groups hub on the Me tab, choose the group and tap the settings gear. Add more people sits below the member list. To remove someone, select them and confirm. Venmo allows that only when the member is all paid up, and the group summary shows whether anything is still pending.

How do I leave a Venmo Group?

You can leave only after you have settled all payments due to and from the group's members, or removed yourself from those expenses. In the group's settings, scroll to Leaving the group and tap Leave. An owner has to transfer ownership first. Once you leave you cannot view activity or add expenses, and a remaining member has to invite you back.

Can a group be deleted or hidden?

Deleting permanently removes the group and its record of expenses for all members, and only the last remaining member can do it. Hiding is a pause that works only when nothing is owed to or by you. In the group's settings, tap Hide under Group visibility, and use View hidden groups in the Groups hub to bring it back.

Can a group member see my other Venmo payments?

Group activity is visible to group members whatever your privacy setting says. Your other payments follow the Public, Friends only or Private setting you chose. A payment that has already been sent can only be made more private than it was, never less.
