5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and its charts and search are free. Splitwise, a shared ledger for groups and friends, allows up to 4 expenses a day on its free plan as of October 2026 and lists charts and search under Pro. Busy trips and groups that want editing rules fit EvenOut.

What does the Splitwise app do?

It keeps a shared record of who paid for what and who owes whom, and it updates every balance when an expense is saved. You choose the split, Splitwise does the arithmetic. There is no score on this page. What follows is what the app does, what each plan includes and which rules apply, so you can judge it against your own group.

What does each plan include, EvenOut or Splitwise?

EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit and includes charts and search, which Splitwise lists as Pro. The table shows both, as of October 2026.

Feature EvenOut Splitwise
Expenses per day No daily expense limit on the free plan Up to 4 on the free plan. Pro removes the limit
Ads None An ad-free experience is listed as a Pro benefit
Charts Free “Spending” charts, for a group or a friend Pro
Expense search Free, works offline Pro
Who can edit expenses “Everyone” or “Only their own”, plus a Viewer role No group admins or special permissions
People not on the app “Add a guest” in the app, invite them to claim their spot later Added before they accept if invited by email or phone. A name-only placeholder friend is added from the web app
What the paid plan adds Receipt scanning and the assistant. Everything else it offers is free Limit removal, scanning, itemization, charts, search, currency conversion, default splits
Recurring expenses Free Free
Simplify Debts Free, on by default Free
Receipt scanning Pro Pro

Splitwise’s free plan also lists groups and friends, equal, exact, percent and share splits, offline mode and cloud sync, within the 4 a day cap.

Which Splitwise rules shape how a group works?

Each of these five points can change the way a group works.

  • The daily cap. Say one person logs every purchase on a 5 day trip, 6 a day. That is 30 expenses, and a free user covers 20 of them (4 a day for 5 days). The other 10 wait for a reset, move to a friend who adds them as paid by you, or need Pro.
  • No permissions. Splitwise does not support group admins or special permissions. Anyone involved in an expense or its group can change or delete it, and balances update when it is saved.
  • Joining. You cannot join a group on your own. A member has to invite you by email, phone or “Invite via link”. Registration asks for your name, email, phone number and password. The email is required, and a phone number adds a security layer.
  • Currencies. Balances stay separate per currency, such as “You owe $12.45 and you are owed £8.72”. The Pro conversion button converts every expense, settled ones too, at the mid-market rate at that moment. It can change other people’s balances, later expenses need another tap, and reversal by email “isn’t always possible”.
  • The Totals screen. It is not meant to show your current balance. Use Balances in the group header.

Which app fits which situation?

EvenOut fits a household, a trip or a one-to-one tab on its free plan, because it has no daily expense limit. A household that logs 2 or 3 expenses a day stays under Splitwise’s cap of 4. The difference shows in four cases, and EvenOut covers each of them on the free plan.

  • Busy trips. A trip that logs 12 expenses a day is three times Splitwise’s cap of 4. EvenOut has no daily expense limit.
  • Reporting. A group that wants to see spending by category and month, or search an old expense by name or amount, gets both free in EvenOut.
  • Editing rules. An owner can limit editing to “Only their own” and give a landlord a Viewer role, which sees everything and can comment but cannot add or change expenses.
  • Guests. Someone who is not on EvenOut yet can be added as a guest, so their share is tracked from the first expense.

If you need every expense converted into one currency, or a spreadsheet export of your history, those two are outside what EvenOut does. Each expense stays in its own currency with a separate balance per currency, and there is no data export.

How do you move a group from Splitwise?

Export the group from Splitwise as a spreadsheet, then choose “Import from Splitwise” under Account in EvenOut. The import is free and takes one group per file. Moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut has the steps and what carries over, and EvenOut vs Splitwise lays out the full comparison.

What should you do next?

Count the expenses your group logs on its busiest day. If it is more than 4, Splitwise’s free plan allows 4 a day and EvenOut’s has no daily expense limit, and moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut takes one import. To see what paying for Splitwise would add, whether Splitwise Pro is worth it matches the Pro features to how you split, and Splitwise problems and fixes covers the issues people report most.

Frequently asked questions

Who can see my expenses in Splitwise?

You see an expense if you are in it or in its group. An expense outside any group is visible only to the people involved in it. Because there are no group admins, every member of a group can also see and change that group's expenses.

How do you check a Splitwise balance that looks wrong?

Start with Recent Activity (Activity on mobile) to see what changed, then compare it with the group's Balances. On a laptop or desktop, View Printable Summary sits below Settle Up. Exporting the group to a spreadsheet gives one row per transaction. Simplify Debts can make who owes whom look surprising while the totals stay correct.

How long does it take to delete a Splitwise account?

Deactivating is separate from deleting. Splitwise's help center says permanent deletion may take up to 30 days and is irreversible. Deactivating uses your current password or a deactivation link sent to your email.

How do you contact Splitwise support?

Email support@splitwise.com. Splitwise says it aims to reply to most support requests within 1 business day.
