Splitwise on the web: what only the website does
Quick answer
Splitwise has a web version, listed on its home page next to the mobile apps as free to use. Four things are documented for the web: the reimbursement split, one list of every recurring expense, name-only placeholder friends and the printable summary on a laptop or desktop. The help center also gives web click paths for exports, restores and undoing a payment record.
Key points
- Splitwise lists the web app next to its mobile apps as free to use, as of October 2026. Four tasks are tied to the web.
- Reimbursement is the one split type marked web only. The other six split types, from equally to itemized, are not.
- To see every recurring expense in one place, click All Expenses in the left sidebar, then the calendar icon. The mobile app shows one repeat at a time.
- The web export path is the gear icon, then Export Spreadsheet. EvenOut's free import reads that file and builds a new group.

Is there a Splitwise web version?
Yes. Splitwise’s home page lists the web app next to its mobile apps as free to use, as of October 2026. You sign in on Splitwise’s website, and the privacy statement says you “will need to create an account.”
The help center gives web steps for many everyday tasks, listed in the table further down. Four things in it are tied to the web, covered next.
What can you only do on the web?
- The reimbursement split. Splitwise’s list of ways to split an expense marks Reimbursement as “web only.” The other types are equally, exact amounts, percentage, shares, adjustment and itemized. Splitwise split types walks through each one.
- One list of every recurring expense. Splitwise says, “To see all of your recurring expenses in one place, use the web app.” Click “All Expenses” in the left sidebar, then click the calendar icon. The same icon inside a group or friendship lists only that group’s or friend’s repeats. The mobile app shows a repeat’s frequency and next date when you tap one instance. More on that in Splitwise recurring expenses.
- A name-only placeholder friend. You can add “someone tracked by name, without contact info” to a group from the web app. For adding someone without their email or phone, see adding a friend to Splitwise without their email.
- The printable summary. On a laptop or desktop, select the group, then click “View Printable Summary” below the “Settle Up” button. A dropdown in the top right picks one month or all time. Splitwise points to it, with Recent Activity and the export, for checking a balance that looks wrong. See why a Splitwise balance looks wrong.
Where do common tasks live on the web?
Splitwise gives web click paths for these tasks. The table lists them as the help center words them.
| Task | Click path on the web |
|---|---|
| Add an expense | Click “Add an expense” at the top, enter a description and amount, then click “equally” in “Paid by you and split equally” |
| Export a group or friendship | Open it from the left sidebar, click the gear icon in the top right corner, click “Export Spreadsheet” |
| Undo a cash payment record | Click “Recent Activity”, hover over the payment record, click the red trash can icon |
| Restore a deleted expense | Click “Recent activity” in the left sidebar, find the deletion record, click “Undelete expense” |
| Turn Simplify Debts on or off | Gear icon, “Edit group settings”, “Advanced settings”, then the toggle |
| Delete a group | Group in the left sidebar, gear icon, “Edit group settings”, scroll to the bottom, “Delete group” |

Which steps are written for mobile?
The help center words the edit and delete steps for mobile. To change the split on an existing expense, it says to “tap the expense and then tap the pencil icon in the top right corner to edit it.” To delete an expense or payment, it says to tap it and then tap the trash can icon. Splitwise says anyone involved in an expense or in its group can edit or delete it, and that it does not support group admins or special permissions.
How do you export a group from the web?
- Open the group or friendship from the left sidebar.
- Click the gear icon in the top right corner.
- Click “Export Spreadsheet.” Another Splitwise page words it “Export as spreadsheet.”
The file has one row per transaction. The numbers under each name show the effect on that person’s balance: positive if they paid or made a payment, negative if they borrowed or received one. A “Cost” column holds the total. The spreadsheet export is not marked Pro, though the JSON account backup is “Pro subscribers only.”
EvenOut’s free Splitwise import reads that spreadsheet and builds a new group from it. The steps are in how to move a Splitwise group to EvenOut.
What should you do next?
If you need the full recurring list, the printable summary, a placeholder friend or the reimbursement split, open the web app. For the rest, the table above lists the click path.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting a payment on the web cancel the money transfer?
Not if the money moved through Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal. Splitwise says deleting the record of those payments does not cancel the funds transfer, and it links to separate steps for cancelling a Venmo or a PayPal payment. The delete step works as an undo for a payment recorded with Record a cash payment, where no money moved through Splitwise.
Who can restore a deleted expense on the web?
Anyone who was originally included on the expense. They open Recent activity, find the record of the deletion and click Undelete expense. A deleted group has its own Undelete group step in Recent activity, and it restores the group with all of its expenses and payments.
What happens after I add a placeholder friend by name?
The person is tracked by name, and you can add their email or phone number later to give them access to the group. Splitwise advises against typing a made-up email address, because it may belong to a real person or to an existing Splitwise account.
