Splitwise balance looks wrong? How to audit it step by step
Quick answer
When a Splitwise balance looks wrong, run five checks in order: Activity for edited or deleted items, Simplify Debts, currency labels, the Totals screen (it is not your balance), then the export for a line-by-line proof. In EvenOut the group owner can set "Who can edit" to "Only their own", so members cannot change expenses they did not add or pay for.
Key points
- In EvenOut the group owner can set "Who can edit" to "Only their own". As of October 2026, Splitwise has no group admins, so anyone involved can edit or delete an expense.
- EvenOut keeps a deposit or hold in its own "Pending" card, marked "Not counted in balances", until you confirm the final amount.
- A Splitwise balance is the sum of what is logged, so start with Recent activity (Activity on mobile) for edited or deleted expenses.
- Simplify Debts changes who owes whom, never anyone's total, and a currency change on an expense only changes the label.
- The Totals screen is not your balance, so read Balances in the group header. The export adds up per person for a line-by-line check.

Why does a Splitwise balance look wrong?
A Splitwise balance is the sum of what has been logged in the group, so a number that looks wrong can trace back to an edit, a setting, a currency label or a screen that is not the balance. As of October 2026, Splitwise has no group admins. Anyone involved in an expense, or in its group, can edit or delete it. Work through the five checks below in order, because the first two take a minute each.
Check 1: did someone edit or delete an expense?
Open Recent Activity on the web (top left), or the Activity tab on mobile (bottom of the screen). Look for edits and deletions to the expenses behind the number that bothers you. A deleted expense stops counting toward the balance, and it can be brought back from the same feed. The steps are in edit, delete and restore an expense.
The mobile app only loads your most recent 100 items. If the change you suspect is older than that, skip ahead to check 5, because the export lists every transaction in the group.
Check 2: is Simplify Debts rearranging who owes whom?
If your overall balance is right but the people you owe are surprising, Simplify Debts is the likely cause. It restructures who owes whom inside a group to cut the number of payments, and it never changes anyone’s total balance.
Say Ana owes Ben $20 and Ben owes Cam $20. With Simplify Debts on, Splitwise shows Ana owing Cam $20 and Ben owing nobody. Ben’s total is $0 either way, and Ana’s is still $20 owed, only to a different person. The idea is explained in simplify debts.
To check the setting, open the group, tap or click the gear icon, and look for the toggle. On mobile it is further down the group settings page. On the web, go to Edit group settings, then Advanced settings. Any group member can change it, so Activity may show that someone did. Splitwise recommends leaving it on once payments have been made.
Check 3: did a currency label change, or did someone convert?
Splitwise keeps a separate balance for each currency, so one group can show “you owe $12.45 and you are owed £8.72” at the same time. Changing an expense’s currency only changes the label. It does not convert the number, and changing currency in Splitwise shows where that setting sits.
Here is how that gets mistaken for a miscalculation. Priya logs a $60.00 dinner on a trip and Sam owes half, $30.00. Later someone sees the dinner was paid in euros and changes the currency on the expense to EUR. The amount stays 60.00, so Sam’s balance goes from $30.00 owed to €30.00 owed. Nothing was converted, and a person who expected a different euro figure will think the app got it wrong.
As of October 2026, Splitwise Pro includes currency conversion: a “Convert to” button that appears when a group or friendship has money in a currency other than your default. It converts every expense in the group at the current rate, settled ones included, and Splitwise warns that this may change balances for other people. Expenses added later need another tap. If someone converted by mistake, Splitwise says to email support as soon as possible, and that it may not be able to reverse the conversion.
Check 4: are you reading the Totals screen as a balance?
The Totals screen is not a balance. Splitwise describes it as a budgeting tool for how much a group has spent, and says it is not intended to show your current balance. For that, open Balances in the group header.
Totals covers a month or all time, and it is calculated on your own device. Its last line, total change in balance, is what you paid for, minus your share, plus payments made, minus payments received. Say that in October you paid for $90.00 of expenses, your share of everything was $30.00, you made one $10.00 payment and received none: 90 minus 30, plus 10, minus 0, is a change of $70.00 for the month. That figure leaves out September, which is why it will not match a balance that runs from the start.
Check 5: prove it line by line
When the first four checks do not explain it, build the number yourself from the transactions. There are two ways.
Printable summary (laptop or desktop). Pick the group in the left-hand menu, click the small blue “View Printable Summary” text under the Settle Up button, then use the dropdown at the top right to choose a month or all time.
Spreadsheet export. It gives one row per transaction. The number under each person’s name is the effect on that person’s balance, positive if they paid for an expense or made a payment, negative if they borrowed or received one. The steps are in how to export a Splitwise group.
Add up the numbers under one name, one currency at a time. Suppose Ana’s column holds -22.50, -15.00, +40.00 and -12.50. That sums to -10.00, so Balances should say Ana owes $10.00 in the group. If it does, the arithmetic is sound and the question is whether each logged expense is correct. If it does not, copy the rows and write to Splitwise support with the file.
How does EvenOut handle these causes?
EvenOut lets a group owner limit who can change expenses, keeps each currency on its own line and holds pending deposits out of balances.
- Who can edit. The owner sets “Who can edit” in Group settings to “Everyone” or “Only their own”. With “Only their own”, people change only what they added or paid for. A “Viewer” can follow along and comment but cannot add or change expenses.
- Balances block. The group page shows your net in big type and lists your balance with each person (“You owe Sarah”, “Noam owes you”).
- One line per currency. Each expense can be in its own currency, and the Balances block gives each currency its own line. EvenOut never converts one currency into another.
- Pending card. A deposit or hold marked as pending is “Not counted in balances” and shows in its own “Pending” card until you confirm the final amount.
- Free charts. The “Spending” charts break a group or friend down by category, person and month, separately from the Balances block.
If you decide to move the group, moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut takes one export file and the free “Import from Splitwise” under Account.
What to do next
Start with check 1 and stop when you find the cause. If all five checks come out clean, contact Splitwise support with the export attached. A deleted payment can change the number too, and undoing a settle up shows what deleting one does to the number.
Frequently asked questions
Is Splitwise accurate?
Splitwise adds up the expenses and payments recorded in a group, so a balance is as accurate as those records. Because anyone involved in an expense or its group can edit or delete it, one possible cause of a surprise is a change nobody remembers, and Activity shows it.
Why does my friend's Totals screen show different numbers from mine?
Totals are calculated on each person's own device, so two people can see different numbers while an expense is still syncing on one of them. On mobile, an expense that has not synced shows a loading or error icon in place of its category icon, and pulling down to refresh the group should trigger a sync.
What does the EvenOut import bring over from a Splitwise export?
One CSV becomes one new EvenOut group with its expenses and payments, dates and currencies. Splitwise's file only holds each person's net change per row, so EvenOut rebuilds an exact-amount split that gives the same balances, and the original split methods and notes are not recovered. The import preview shows a Summary of expenses, payments and skipped rows.
Who do I contact if all five checks find nothing?
Write to support@splitwise.com and attach the group's spreadsheet export. As of October 2026, Splitwise says it aims to reply to most support requests within 1 business day.
