Splitwise receipt scanning and itemizing: what needs Pro
Quick answer
EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and its By item split is free by hand, with receipt scanning and the assistant as its only paid features. As of October 2026, only Splitwise Pro subscribers can scan and itemize receipts, and every group member sees the result. A receipt attached to a Splitwise bill must be 2MB or less and upload within 30 seconds.
Key points
- EvenOut's By item split is free by hand, with tax and tip entered as items. Scanning is Pro and splits tax and tip in proportion to each person's items.
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Its only paid features are receipt scanning and the assistant, at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year.
- As of October 2026, Splitwise lists receipt scanning among Pro features that also include removing its 4-a-day limit, charts, search, currency conversion and default splits.
- Splitwise's help center says only Pro subscribers can scan and itemize receipts, and all group members see expenses created this way.
- An attached receipt image or PDF has to be 2MB or less and finish uploading within 30 seconds, the two limits Splitwise's help article gives for a failed upload.

Does Splitwise scan receipts for free?
No. Splitwise’s help center says “Only Pro subscribers can scan and itemize receipts, but all group members will see expenses created this way.” Its Pro page lists receipt scanning and itemization among the Pro features, alongside removal of the daily expense limit, charts, expense search, currency conversion and default splits.
What does an itemized split cover?
An Itemized split lets you enter individual items from a bill, assign them to specific people, and add tax, tip and discounts. Splitwise’s list of split types ties Pro to the scanning route: “On the mobile app, Pro subscribers can itemize by scanning a receipt.”
The store listing text for Pro also mentions 10GB of cloud storage for receipts and JSON backups. Splitwise’s Pro help article does not list either one.
Why does a receipt upload fail?
An image or PDF attached to a bill has two limits. The upload has to be 2MB or less, and it has to finish within 30 seconds. A full-resolution camera photo can pass 2MB, and a slow connection can run out of time.
- If the file is large, take a lower-resolution photo, crop it to the receipt, or save a smaller PDF.
- If the connection is slow, retry later. Splitwise’s help article suggests that when you are on a slow connection.
If neither fixes it, Splitwise lists support@splitwise.com.
What happens to a scanned receipt?
Splitwise’s privacy statement (updated May 26th, 2026) says a third-party receipt-scanning service may improve its OCR quality by training an algorithm on receipts you provide to Splitwise, where permitted by law. So a receipt may be read and also used to improve the vendor’s reader.
How does EvenOut handle itemized receipts?
EvenOut has two routes, and they differ in price and in who does the arithmetic.
By item, free, by hand.
- Tap “Add expense”, enter the total and open the split chip.
- Choose “By item” in the “How to split” sheet and tap “Add item”.
- Give each line a name and a price, and tap the chips for who had it. Each line splits evenly among the people you pick and reads “$X each · N people”.
- Keep adding lines until the pill reads “All assigned”. The lines have to add up to the expense total, so tax and tip go in as lines too.
EvenOut does not show per-person totals while you build a By item split. The expense page afterwards labels the split “Itemized” and shows each person’s amount, not the items. You can also add one photo to the expense as a “Receipt photo”.
Scanning, Pro. Open “Scan a receipt” and tap “Take photo” or “Choose from library”. EvenOut reads the store, date, currency, line items, subtotal, tax, tip, total and a suggested category. Every item starts split equally, and you tap an item to split it Equally, Exact, Percent or Shares among the people you choose. Tax and tip are split in proportion to each person’s items. You review Items, Tax, Tip and Total, then tap “Save itemized expense”.
Scanned items cannot be edited, and the receipt image is not kept. EvenOut’s server sends the photo to Google’s Gemini to be read, after removing its location data.
What does the proportional split look like?
Say three friends have brunch. Kai orders $16.00, Lena $22.00 and Mo $14.00, and they share a $12.00 pitcher of juice, which is $4.00 each. The subtotal is $64.00. Tax is $5.12 and tip is $12.80, so the check is $81.92.
Each person’s items are Kai $20.00, Lena $26.00 and Mo $18.00, which total $64.00. Tax and tip add $17.92, which is 28% of $64.00, so each person pays 1.28 times their items.
| Person | Items | With tax and tip |
|---|---|---|
| Kai | $20.00 | $25.60 |
| Lena | $26.00 | $33.28 |
| Mo | $18.00 | $23.04 |
| Total | $64.00 | $81.92 |
An equal split of the check would charge each person about $27.31, so Mo, who ordered least, pays $4.27 less this way. You can reach the same numbers by hand with By item, by adding a tax and tip line for each person, with only that person selected: $5.60 for Kai, $7.28 for Lena and $5.04 for Mo. Scanning does that arithmetic for you.
Which one should you use?
Use EvenOut’s By item when the receipt is short, since it costs nothing, the free plan has no daily expense limit and you control every line. Use scanning when the receipt is long and you would rather tap than type. Receipt scanning and the assistant are EvenOut’s only paid features, at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and everything else is free: charts, search, recurring expenses and the Splitwise import, with no ads. What Splitwise Pro includes and how Splitwise’s split types work are the next reads if you are comparing the two apps.
Frequently asked questions
Where is receipt scanning in EvenOut, and what does a free account see?
Scan a receipt is a row in the AI block on the Account tab, a Scan button on Add expense and an option in Quick add, which opens when you long-press Add expense. On a free account these open the EvenOut Pro page instead of the scanner, and By item stays free.
Does receipt scanning work offline in EvenOut?
No. Scanning needs a connection, because the photo is sent to EvenOut's server to be read. Adding an expense by hand works offline and syncs when you reconnect.
Is there a limit on how many receipts I can scan in EvenOut?
Yes. Scanning shares a usage limit with the assistant, applied per day and per subscription period, so scanning has a cap.
