Key points
- Tricount's terms (version of 17 December 2024) say the website and application are owned and operated by bunq B.V.
- The 2022 release called it an acquisition, pending regulatory approval. The founders' 2023 message says joined forces and never uses the word acquisition.
- Official user figures depend on the source and date, from more than 5.2 million registered users in 2022 to more than 20 million on the website now.
- The 2024 rebuild added a Free Credit Card and ended Premium, including CSV and PDF export. The help center says new sign-ups get a bunq account automatically.
- EvenOut is a separate app that only records payments. Its free plan has charts, search and repeating expenses, and its only paid features are receipt scanning and the assistant.

Who owns Tricount?
bunq B.V. owns and operates Tricount. Tricount’s terms, in the version dated 17 December 2024, say: “The tricount website and application ‘tricount’ are owned and operated by bunq B.V.” The imprint says the website is provided by bunq B.V., and the website terms say “tricount is a trademark of bunq B.V.”
As of October 2026, Tricount’s help center adds that “tricount is fully running on bunq’s infrastructure now.”
What is the timeline, and how did the wording change?
The deal was announced in 2022, and the language describing it changed over the next three years.
| Date | Source | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| 3 May 2022 | bunq press release | “the acquisition* of Belgian fintech Tricount”, with the footnote “*pending regulatory approval” |
| 7 August 2023 | Founders’ message | Tricount “joined forces with” bunq in May 2022. The word acquisition does not appear |
| 14 May 2024 | Tricount blog | The new app opens in beta, with a Free Credit Card and “a simpler interface” |
| 17 December 2024 | Tricount terms | “owned and operated by bunq B.V.” |
| 30 January 2025 | bunq press release | “In 2022, Tricount joined forces with bunq”, then “Thanks to this acquisition” |
The wording moves from acquisition, with a condition attached, to joined forces, to a flat statement of ownership. The 2025 release uses both phrases back to back. No page in the table states the date the deal was completed.
The founders’ 2023 message has a section called “What comes next”, where they say they “look forward to integrating our services with those of bunq”. The new app that opened in beta nine months later, on 14 May 2024, added a Free Credit Card. The 2025 release refers to the app as “Tricount by bunq”.
How many users does Tricount have?
These are all official figures, but they are not comparable: they come from different dates and use different wording.
| Source | Date | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| bunq press release | 3 May 2022 | “5.4 million new users” with the deal; the release describes Tricount as having “more than 5.2 million” registered users |
| Founders’ message | 7 August 2023 | “nearly 10 million users” |
| bunq press release | 30 January 2025 | analysis of “nearly 16 million users across 175 countries” |
| Tricount home page | October 2026 | “more than 20 million” |
What changed after bunq joined?
- A new app in 2024. It went into beta on 14 May 2024 with a Free Credit Card and what Tricount calls “a simpler interface”.
- Premium ended. The help center says Premium “was discontinued with the new app”. Former Premium members get a free 6-month bunq Pro subscription worth €59.94. That is the value of the bunq plan, not Premium’s price. The Premium CSV and PDF export went with it, and the FAQ tells you to email for an export instead.
- The core app stayed free. The home page says “Free. No ads. No limits.” and its description says “No ads or daily expense cap.” Is Tricount free? covers the paid extras that sit around it, such as the eSIM and ATM withdrawals.
What does the ownership mean for your group?
For the app itself, the facts above are what Tricount states: bunq B.V. owns and operates it, and it runs on bunq’s systems. If you are deciding where to keep a group’s records, the differences you can check are the sign-up steps, what the free plan includes and what costs extra. EvenOut vs Tricount and Tricount alternatives put those side by side, and EvenOut vs Splitwise vs Tricount compares the free plans.
EvenOut is a separate app. Its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, with five split methods, offline use, charts, search and repeating expenses. It records payments and does not move money. Receipt scanning and the assistant are its only paid features.
