Family plan cost per person calculator for any shared plan

4 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

Add the plan price and the cost of any paid add-on seats, then divide by the number of people paying, including the person who is billed. A $24 monthly plan shared by four is $6 each a month and $72 a year. The result is plain division and assumes every seat is used. Set the billing periods per year to convert a yearly or every 4 weeks price.

Key points

  • Each person pays (plan price + add-on seats × seat price) ÷ people paying. The person who is billed counts as one of the people.
  • Billing periods per year converts any price: 12 for monthly, 1 for yearly, 13 for every 4 weeks, 52 for weekly.
  • Sharing only saves money when the plan price ÷ seats used is below a solo plan. A $24 plan against $10 solo plans needs 3 people.
  • The results are plain division, not prices a company charges, and they assume every seat is used.

Each person pays per billing period $6.00

Each person pays per month $6.00

Each person pays per year $72.00

Whole plan per billing period $24.00

Whole plan per year $288.00

Saved per billing period versus everyone buying solo $16.00

Show the formula
  1. Whole plan per billing period = plan price + (add-on seats × price of one add-on seat)
  2. Each person pays per billing period = whole plan ÷ people paying
  3. Each person pays per year = whole plan × billing periods per year ÷ people paying
  4. Each person pays per month = whole plan per year ÷ 12 ÷ people paying
  5. Saved per billing period = (solo plan price × people paying) minus the whole plan, shown only when the solo price is above 0
  6. Every figure is rounded to the cent, and any leftover cents go to the first payers so the shares add up to the total

When to use this calculator

Use it for any family or shared plan where one person is billed and the others pay them back: streaming, music, storage, software or news. It also handles add-on seats, such as the extra member slots some streaming services sell. It does the division only. Who is allowed on a plan is set by the company, so check its rules before you count people.

How the calculator works

  1. Add the add-on seats × the price of one seat to the plan price. That is the whole plan per billing period.
  2. Divide it by the people paying. That is each person’s share per billing period.
  3. Multiply the whole plan by the billing periods per year, then divide by the people for the yearly share.
  4. Divide that yearly total by 12, then by the people, for the monthly share.
  5. If you enter a solo price, the saving is that price × the people minus the whole plan.

Billing periods per year is 12 for a monthly plan, 1 for a yearly plan and 52 for a weekly one. A plan billed every 4 weeks has 13 periods a year, because 13 × 4 weeks is 52 weeks. Shares are in whole cents, with any leftover cent going to the first payers.

A worked example

Say a plan costs $24 a month, four people share it and each would pay $10 for a solo plan. Each person pays $24 ÷ 4 = $6 a month, and the year is $24 × 12 = $288, so $288 ÷ 4 = $72 each. Four solo plans cost $40, so sharing saves $16 a month.

Sharing saves money only when enough seats are used. The break-even point is the plan price ÷ the solo price, 24 ÷ 10 = 2.4, so three people is the fewest that come out ahead.

People paying Each pays a month Against a $10 solo plan
6 $4.00 $6.00 less
5 $4.80 $5.20 less
4 $6.00 $4.00 less
3 $8.00 $2.00 less
2 $12.00 $2.00 more

Real plans to try

Enter these numbers to reproduce the figures below. They are US prices before tax as of October 2026. The per-person amounts are plain division, not prices the companies charge.

Plan What to enter Each person’s share
Spotify Family, $21.99 a month 6 people $3.67 a month, $43.98 a year
Netflix Premium, $26.99, with 2 ad-free Extra Members at $9.99 each 2 add-on seats at $9.99, 3 people $15.66 a month, $187.88 a year
NYT All Access Family, $34 every 4 weeks 13 periods a year, 4 people $8.50 every 4 weeks, $9.21 a month, $110.50 a year
Microsoft 365 Family, $129.99 a year 1 period a year, 6 people $21.67 a year, $1.81 a month

The NYT row uses the price after the first 6 months. Each plan has its own rules about who can join. Spotify describes Family as “for up to 6 family members residing at the same address”. Netflix sells Extra Member slots, 1 on Standard and up to 2 on Premium, for people outside the household. Every plan’s price and sharing rule sit side by side in shared subscription plans compared.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every seat is filled. Each empty seat is paid by the others, as the table above shows.
  • Using only a promotional price. Run the calculator again with the price you will pay after any introductory offer ends.
  • Forgetting add-on seats. An extra member slot is billed on top of the plan price, so enter it in the add-on boxes.
  • Skipping tax. Prices here exclude tax, and your bill may not.

For the step by step on two common plans, see how to split a Spotify Family plan and how to split Netflix. In EvenOut the person who is billed can add the plan as an expense in the Subscriptions category, split it equally among the people paying, and set it to repeat monthly or yearly. Settle up records each payback, and EvenOut does not collect the money.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the Duolingo family plan cost per person?

Duolingo says Super Family covers up to 6 Super accounts, and you cannot invite someone who already has an active paid Duolingo subscription. Enter 6 people and the family plan price Duolingo shows you for the billing period, and the calculator gives each share.

Should the person who is billed pay a share too?

Yes, count them in the people paying. A $24 plan with the owner and three others is 4 people at $6 each. Leaving the owner out would charge the other three $8 each, $2 more than their share.

How do I handle a price that changes after an introductory offer?

Run the calculator for each price. NYT All Access Family is $8 every 4 weeks for the first 6 months and then $34 every 4 weeks, so with 4 logins each person pays $2.00 and then $8.50 every 4 weeks.
