How does EvenOut repeat a monthly bill?

You add the bill once with Repeat set to Monthly, and the server adds every later one for you. You can only set Repeat while adding an expense, not while editing one.

  1. Tap “Add expense” and pick the group in the “With” chip.
  2. Type the amount and what it was for, such as Rent.
  3. Check who paid and how it is split.
  4. Tap “Photo, repeat, pending or note”, choose “Repeat” in the “Add to this expense” sheet, then pick “Monthly”. A preview reads something like “Next one Nov 5”.
  5. Tap “Save”.

The expense you save is the first one. Each later one is a normal expense with the same payer and split, added as you. Setting it up needs a connection.

Say three roommates split a $1,350 rent equally and you pay the landlord. Each share is $450.00. Add a $96 internet bill the same way and each share is $32.00. Over a year that is 12 rent expenses ($16,200) and 12 internet expenses ($1,152), and you type each one only once. Each roommate’s yearly share comes to $5,784, which is $5,400 of rent plus $384 of internet.

How do you pause, resume or stop a repeat?

Open “Repeating expenses” from the group’s “…” menu, from group settings under “More”, from a friend’s menu, or from the “Repeats monthly” row on an expense a repeat added. Each repeat shows its schedule and a status: “Next on Oct 30”, “Paused”, “Paused · Needs attention” or “Ended”. Tap one to choose:

  • Pause: nothing new is added until you resume.
  • Resume: it picks up from the next date, and dates skipped while paused are not added.
  • Stop repeating: expenses already added stay.

Say the landlord waives November’s rent. Pause the repeat before November 5 and resume it on November 20. The next expense added is December 5, and November’s is skipped.

The server pauses a repeat it cannot add, for example when the person who created it has left the group, and marks it “Paused · Needs attention”. A group or friend can hold up to 50 open repeats. A repeat adds a bill and nothing more, so it never settles up for anyone.

How does Splitwise handle repeating expenses?

Splitwise lists recurring expenses among its core free features: weekly, fortnightly (every other week), monthly or yearly, with an optional email reminder. Free accounts can add up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026. Only the web app lists all recurring expenses in one place.

The steps for setting one up, and for cancelling it, are in how recurring expenses work in Splitwise.

What do Settle Up and Tricount do?

Settle Up’s Premium page lists “Recurring transactions” and “Future transactions” among its Premium items, next to “Remove all ads”, “Charts” and “Remind friends to pay”. In EvenOut, repeats, charts and reminders are free and there are no ads.

Settle Up Premium comes as Individual, at $3.49 a month or $18.99 a year on that page, or Group, a one-time purchase per group with a year at $34.99. Its tips page says you can lower the cost by adding it as a group expense. Split four ways, the year of Group Premium is $8.75 for three roommates and $8.74 for the fourth.

Tricount’s own comparison page says to add each bill manually. If your rent and utilities repeat, that means typing each one yourself every month.

What do the open-source and smaller apps offer?

  • Spliit: a free web app with no account. Its home page lists recurring expenses as daily, weekly or monthly and marks them Beta. Anyone with a group’s link can read and change it.
  • SplitPro: open source under the MIT license. Its README lists recurring expenses and says they need PostgreSQL’s pg_cron extension. The README also says the old community instance at splitpro.app is no longer maintained and remains at version 1.3.4.
  • Splitser: lists recurring expenses with offline mode and a web app. Using it is almost entirely free.
  • Cospend: a shared budget manager that runs inside a Nextcloud server, with recurring bills and CSV import and export. Its latest release was version 4.1.3 on September 2, 2026.
  • Splittr: version 2.17.5 added recurring expenses on August 27, 2026. It is a free download with in-app purchases.

When is a repeat the right tool?

A repeat suits a bill that is the same every month, because it copies the expense you saved. Rent at $1,350 and internet at $96 qualify. Say your electric bill is $62 in June and $118 in January. That one changes, so add each month’s amount by hand, and how to split utilities between roommates covers the arithmetic.

Pick by the interval you need:

  • Weekly, monthly or yearly: EvenOut repeats all three on the free plan, with no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise lists the same three.
  • Every other week or every day: Splitwise lists fortnightly and Spliit lists daily, marked Beta. EvenOut has neither.

For rent, internet and other bills that are the same every month, EvenOut fits most households: the repeat is free, you can pause, resume or stop it from the Repeating expenses screen in each group’s menu, and the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. For more on what each app does for housemates, see the best apps to split bills with roommates. To keep every repeating bill in one list, a recurring bill tracker shows what to record.

Frequently asked questions

Does a repeat in EvenOut collect the rent or pay the bill?

No. A repeat only adds the bill to the group's balances. EvenOut records payments and moves no money. Whoever paid the landlord is the payer on the expense, and the others settle up with that person and record the payment themselves.

Who can pause or stop a repeat in EvenOut?

It follows the same rule as editing an expense. Viewers cannot. In a group set to Everyone, any member except a viewer can manage it. In a group set to Only their own, it is the person who added or paid the expense, plus the group owner.

Can an EvenOut repeat be daily or end on a date?

No. The choices are Never, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly, with no daily option, no custom interval and no end date. To end one, open Repeating expenses and choose Stop repeating. The expenses it already added stay in the group.

Do repeating expenses in Splitwise need Pro?

Splitwise lists recurring expenses among its core free features, and its Pro list does not include them. You tap the calendar icon or the date field when you create or edit an expense. A repeat runs forever until you stop it, with Just this once in the mobile app or Cancel future recurrences on the web.

Do I need to be online for an EvenOut repeat to be added?

Setting one up, pausing, resuming and stopping all need a connection. After that the server adds each later expense on its date, so your phone does not have to be switched on at 9:00.
