Splitwise vs Settle Up vs EvenOut: how each one charges

7 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

EvenOut has no daily expense limit and no ads on its free plan, and it charges only for receipt scanning and the assistant. Splitwise limits free users to 4 expenses a day and sells Pro as a monthly plan or a yearly Individual or Duo plan with a 30 day Trip Pass. Settle Up is free with ads and sells Premium per person or once per group.

Key points

  • EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. EvenOut Pro, $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, covers receipt scanning and the assistant, and nothing else is paid.
  • EvenOut has recurring bills, charts, reminders and a photo on each expense free. Settle Up's Premium page lists all four.
  • Splitwise's free plan stops at 4 expenses a day. Its yearly Individual and Duo plans each include one Trip Pass that gives a group Pro features for 30 days.
  • Settle Up's free version has ads. Premium is either a personal subscription or a one-time purchase for one group.
  • Settle Up's website and its US app listing show different Premium prices, so name the channel when you compare.

How does each app charge?

EvenOut charges only for two AI features, Splitwise charges to lift a cap and add features, and Settle Up charges to remove ads and add features. The table shows each plan as of October 2026.

App Free plan Paid plan Ads
EvenOut No daily expense limit Pro: $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year None
Splitwise Up to 4 expenses a day Pro: monthly, or a yearly Individual or Duo plan with a Trip Pass. Price varies by country and date Ad-free is a Pro item
Settle Up Free to use Individual Premium (subscription) or Group Premium (one-time, per group) Free version has ads; Premium removes them

How does EvenOut charge?

EvenOut Pro is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year in the US, and it covers two things: receipt scanning and the assistant. Everything else is free, including charts, search, repeating expenses, reminders, the Splitwise import and a photo on each expense. The free plan has no daily expense limit, no plan has ads, and there is no per-group purchase.

How does Splitwise’s paywall work?

Splitwise sells one product, Pro, in three shapes. Its help center names them: a monthly subscription for one person, an Individual plan billed once a year for one person, and a Duo plan billed once a year for two people, where the buyer adds a second person. Every plan includes every Pro feature, and both yearly plans include one annual Trip Pass.

A Trip Pass “can be applied to any trip group of your choosing and grants Pro features to group members for 30 days”. Say eight friends take a 9 day trip and one of them applies the pass to the trip group. All eight members get Pro features for 30 days, which covers the trip with 21 days to spare. A 6 week stay would outlast it. The Trip Pass guide goes through how it works.

Splitwise’s own lists say Pro removes the daily limit and adds charts and graphs, expense search, currency conversion, receipt scanning and itemization, default splits, an ad-free app and early access to new features. Its terms say the Pro price “may vary due to date of subscription, country, local taxes and regulations, promotions”, so check the price on the checkout screen of the plan you pick. Splitwise gives its reason as relying on subscriptions to stay “financially sustainable”.

Without Pro, the cap is the thing you meet first. The Splitwise daily limit guide covers waiting, asking a friend to add the expense and combining entries.

How does Settle Up’s paywall work?

Settle Up’s free version has ads, and Premium is sold in two forms, which is the main difference from Splitwise. Individual Premium is a subscription, described as “For you in every group”. Group Premium is “For every member in one group”, is bought once (Settle Up says “it’s not a subscription”) and is “Transferable if the group is closed”.

The prices depend on where you buy. As of October 2026, in dollars, Settle Up’s website and its US app listing disagree on every line they share, by 50 cents or more.

Premium product Settle Up website App listing (US)
Individual, monthly $3.49 $3.99
Individual, yearly $18.99 $19.99
Group, 1 week $5.49 $5.99
Group, 1 month $13.99 $14.99
Group, 2 months $27.99 $29.99
Group, 1 year $34.99 $39.99
Group, lifetime $134.99 $149.99

Say six people share one trip group and one of them buys Group Premium for 1 month on the website, $13.99. Settle Up’s tips page says you can lower the cost by adding the purchase as a group expense. Split six ways, the shares are five of $2.33 and one of $2.34. Individual Premium is a different trade: $18.99 a year on the website covers you in every group you join, so it suits the one person who runs several groups. For the plans one at a time, see is Settle Up free.

The Premium page lists ten items: remove all ads, receipt photos, expense categories, 7 extra group colors, recurring transactions, future transactions, remind friends to pay, edit exchange rates in bulk, export to Excel and charts.

What sits behind each paywall?

EvenOut’s free plan includes the recurring bills, charts, reminders and receipt photo that Settle Up’s Premium page lists, and the charts that Splitwise puts behind Pro. EvenOut charges only for scanning and the assistant.

Feature EvenOut Splitwise Settle Up
Daily cap No daily expense limit 4 a day on free; Pro removes it Not stated
Recurring bills Free: weekly, monthly or yearly Free: weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly Premium
Charts Free, per group or friend Pro Premium page lists “Charts”
Reminders Free, by shared message or email A balance reminder with no Pro label Premium page lists “Remind friends to pay”
Receipts Pro scans; one free photo Pro scans and itemizes Premium: receipt photos

What else differs besides the paywall?

The apps also differ on who can change an expense and how people join a group.

  • Group control. In EvenOut the owner picks “Everyone” or “Only their own” for who can edit, and there is a Viewer role. Splitwise says it has no group admins or special permissions, so anyone involved in an expense or its group can view, edit or delete it. Settle Up lists read-only access as an option.
  • Inviting people. EvenOut uses an invite link for groups and lets you add a guest by name for someone who is not on the app yet. Settle Up invites by link or QR code. Splitwise says you cannot join a group on your own, since a member invites you by email, phone or link.

Which paywall fits your group?

Match the paywall to how your group splits, not to the headline price.

  • You want a free plan with no daily limit. EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, along with free charts, repeats and reminders. Splitwise’s free plan stops at 4 expenses a day, and Settle Up’s free version has ads.
  • One person organizes many groups. EvenOut has no per-group purchase and no cap on groups. Settle Up’s Individual Premium covers that person in every group.
  • One trip with a fixed length. EvenOut’s free plan covers a trip group with nothing to buy. Splitwise’s Trip Pass gives the group Pro features for 30 days, and Settle Up’s Group Premium comes in lengths from a week to lifetime.
  • You need currency conversion or an Excel file. Splitwise Pro converts, and Settle Up lists Excel export in Premium. EvenOut does neither.

EvenOut Pro covers receipt scanning and the assistant, which Settle Up’s Premium list does not name. The recurring bills, charts and reminders that Settle Up lists in Premium are free in EvenOut. For all five apps in one place, see the full Splitwise, Tricount, Settle Up and Splid comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is Settle Up's yearly Individual plan cheaper than paying monthly?

Yes, on both channels. On the website, 12 months at $3.49 is $41.88, against $18.99 for the yearly plan, which the page shows as $1.58 a month with 'SAVE 55%'. In the US app listing, 12 months at $3.99 is $47.88, against $19.99 for the yearly plan. Prices are as of October 2026.

Can you earn Settle Up Premium without paying?

Settle Up's tips page says that when 5 invited friends join as new users, you can 'receive 1 Premium feature forever'. That is one feature, not the whole Premium list, so confirm the offer in the app before relying on it.

How do you cancel Splitwise Pro or get a refund?

Cancel in the app (Account, then Splitwise Pro) or on the web with 'Cancel subscription'. A purchase made directly with Splitwise can request a refund, with the money back in 5 to 10 business days, and the subscription is cancelled. Purchases billed by a phone platform are refunded by that platform instead.

Does Settle Up show ads on the free plan?

Its US app listing carries a 'Contains Advertising' label, and its Premium page lists 'Remove all ads'. The listing's privacy section, which the developer fills in itself, lists Third-Party Advertising data (User ID and Device ID) and says identifiers 'may be used to track you'.
