Venmo vs Splitwise vs EvenOut: paying versus tracking
Quick answer
EvenOut has no daily expense limit and no ads on its free plan, while Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day. Venmo moves money and needs a US bank account, and Splitwise and EvenOut track who owes whom. EvenOut only records payments, so you pay in Venmo, then record it.
Key points
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows 4 expenses a day as of October 2026.

What is the difference between Venmo, Splitwise and EvenOut?
Venmo moves money, and Splitwise and EvenOut keep score. Venmo’s own terms say a charge request “must be accepted before money is sent,” and you need to be in the United States with a U.S. bank account to use it. Splitwise and EvenOut work the other way around. You record an expense once, and the app updates what each person owes.
The comparison gets confusing because the jobs overlap. Venmo Groups track shared expenses for up to 30 people, and Splitwise can send a payment through Venmo in the US. The cleaner way to read it: in Venmo the payment is the product and the tracking is a feature, while in Splitwise and EvenOut the running balance is the product and the payment happens somewhere else, or inside Splitwise in the US.
How do the three compare side by side?
EvenOut and Splitwise keep the ledger and Venmo sends the money, and the clearest differences are the daily limit, who needs an account and what each one charges. The figures below are as of October 2026.
| Feature | EvenOut | Splitwise | Venmo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Tracks who owes whom | Tracks who owes whom | Sends and requests money; Groups split shared costs |
| Who can use it | Sign in with Google or email; guests need no account | Account with an email address | US only, with a US bank account |
| Limit to know | No daily expense limit on the free plan | 4 expenses a day on the free plan | Weekly spending limit of $299.99 until you verify |
| Fewest payments | Simplify debts, on by default | Simplify Debts | Groups work out the least number of payments |
| Settling | Records a payment only, so no transfer fee or sending limit | US: Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal; select European countries: Pay by Bank; elsewhere, record a payment | Pay inside Venmo, or mark a payment made outside Venmo as paid |
| Someone not signed up | “Add a guest” with just a name: track their share now, invite later | Can be added by email or phone before accepting | They open a Venmo account to claim a payment or fulfill a request |
| Cost | Free, no ads; Pro (receipt scanning and the assistant) is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year | Free tier; ad-free is a Pro benefit; Pro is a paid plan | $0.00 to send from balance, debit card or bank; 3.00% by credit card |
What does EvenOut do, and what does it cost?
EvenOut tracks who owes whom and does not send money. The free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, a group holds up to 200 people, and charts, search and repeating expenses are free. Each expense gets its own split method: equally, exact amounts, percent, shares or by item. Simplify debts is a group setting that is on by default, and it cuts the number of payments without changing what anyone owes.
In a group, “Add a guest” lets you track the share of someone who is not on EvenOut yet and invite them later. Each expense can carry its own currency, from 154 to choose from, and balances stay separate per currency with no conversion.
When it is time to pay, “Settle up” records the payment and nothing more. EvenOut does not link to Venmo and does not send money, so you pay through Venmo or your bank and then record it, with no transfer fee or sending limit on the EvenOut side. A reminder goes out as a shared message or an email, at most one per person per group a day, not as a push notification. Receipt scanning and the assistant are the paid features, at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year.
What does Splitwise do, and what does it cost?
Splitwise keeps a running balance for each group and friend. As of October 2026, its home page lists these as free: groups and friends, equal and unequal splits, percentages and shares, simplify debts, recurring expenses, offline mode, 100+ currencies and payment integrations.
Free users can add up to 4 expenses each day, and Pro removes the limit. Pro also lists receipt scanning, itemization, charts, search, currency conversion, default splits and an ad-free experience. It is a paid plan, sold as a monthly subscription or as yearly Individual and Duo plans that include a Trip Pass. The Splitwise daily limit explains what to do when you hit it.
For payments, Splitwise in the US can send through Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal. In select European countries it offers Pay by Bank, and elsewhere you record a payment. How Splitwise connects to Venmo covers the US setup.
What does Venmo do, and where does it stop?
Venmo sends the money itself, which EvenOut does not. Its splitting tools are built around requests. To split one purchase, you open it under Me, then Transactions, choose the people, adjust the amounts and tap Send Requests, which sends a charge request to each person.
For costs that build up over time there are Venmo Groups. Members add expenses, Venmo splits each into equal amounts by default, you can change any member’s amount or leave someone out, and Venmo works out how everyone can settle with the least number of payments. A group holds up to 30 people. A non-friend has to accept the invite within 30 days, and you can remove a member only once they are all paid up. The owner cannot be removed.
The limits are about money rather than expenses. Until you verify your identity, a personal account has a weekly spending limit of $299.99. A verified account can send up to $60,000 a week, though Venmo can still decline a payment and can change its limits. If a phone number or email is not linked to a Venmo account, the person can claim the payment or fulfill the request by opening one, and money sent to someone who never does is cancelled and returned after 30 days. Venmo Groups: how they work, limits and settling up goes through the details.
How do you use Venmo and a tracker together?
Pay in Venmo and record it in the tracker. The tracker handles the arithmetic over weeks, and Venmo handles the one payment at the end.
- Log each expense when it happens. Enter the amount, who paid and who shares it.
- Open the balances when you are ready to settle. With simplify debts on, the balances already reflect the fewest payments.
- Send each payment in Venmo. One payment per balance, not one request per expense.
- Record the payment in the tracker. Tap Settle up and record the payment so the balance drops to zero.
Say four roommates, Priya, Marcus, Lena and Tom, split everything equally in October. Priya pays the $120 electric bill, Marcus buys $84 of groceries, Lena pays $36 for cleaning supplies and Tom pays $24 for a streaming plan. The total is $264, so each person’s share is $66.
| Roommate | Paid | Share | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Priya | $120 | $66 | Owed $54 |
| Marcus | $84 | $66 | Owed $18 |
| Lena | $36 | $66 | Owes $30 |
| Tom | $24 | $66 | Owes $42 |
If each payer sends a request for each expense, that is 4 expenses times 3 people, or 12 requests, with money crossing in both directions. Netted out, it takes 3 payments: Tom sends Priya $42, Lena sends Priya $12 and Lena sends Marcus $18. The app may propose a different set of three payments that reaches the same balances, and any such set is fine.
A Venmo Group nets the roommates out the same way when everyone is in the US and on Venmo. A tracker such as EvenOut also works when someone is not on Venmo or has no US bank account, and it keeps one balance across every bill when the costs run for months.
Which should you use?
For most groups EvenOut is the pick: the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and you pay through Venmo. The right choice still depends on the group.
- You log several expenses a day, or the group runs for months. EvenOut’s free plan has no daily limit and includes charts, search and repeating expenses for rent and bills. Splitwise’s free plan stops at 4 expenses a day.
- Someone is not on any of these apps. Venmo needs them to open an account to claim a payment or fulfill a request, while Splitwise and EvenOut let you add them to expenses first. In EvenOut a guest needs only a name.
- Everyone has Venmo and the cost is one dinner or one weekend. A Venmo Split or Group covers it. See how to split a bill on Venmo for the steps.
- You want one app that can also send the money in the US. Splitwise can, through Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal. EvenOut cannot.
- Some people use different currencies. Splitwise Pro converts expenses into your default currency. EvenOut keeps each currency separate and does not convert.
Venmo and EvenOut do different jobs: one pays and the other counts. If you are leaving Splitwise because of the daily limit, the EvenOut vs Splitwise comparison shows the differences feature by feature, and Cash App vs Venmo covers the payment side if you are choosing between those two.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting a payment in Splitwise cancel the Venmo transfer?
No. Splitwise's help center says deleting a recorded payment does not cancel a Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal transfer. In EvenOut a deleted payment can be restored from its page, and because EvenOut never sends money, there is no transfer to cancel.
How is Splitwise Pay different from Venmo?
Venmo is a separate payment service that needs a US bank account. Splitwise Pay lets you pay friends inside Splitwise instead. It is for US residents aged 18 or older and involves identity checks that include a Social Security number. Splitwise's terms, last updated September 28, 2026, say it does not charge transaction fees for standard electronic funds transfers. Instant withdrawal to a debit card or eligible bank account costs 1.75%, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum.
What happens when someone ignores a Venmo request?
Unfulfilled requests sit under Me, then Transactions, then Pending. You can delete the request or remind the person, which sends them a new notification. EvenOut works differently: its reminder goes out by email or a shared message, the email stops if the person has turned off Reminders in their notification settings, and a guest has no inbox, so a guest can only be reminded with a shared message.
What does it cost to cash out a Venmo balance?
As of October 2026, a standard transfer to a linked bank account costs $0.00 and typically takes 1 to 3 business days. Instant Transfer costs 1.75% of the amount, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum. On $100, that is $1.75.
