Does Splitwise connect to Venmo? The US setup, explained

4 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

In the US, yes. Splitwise lists Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal as ways to send money when you settle up. In select European countries it lists Pay by Bank, and elsewhere you record a payment made another way. If you pay outside the app, record the payment so the balance clears.

Key points

  • In the US, Splitwise lists Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal as ways to send money. Select European countries get Pay by Bank.
  • Everywhere else, Settle up records a payment you made outside the app, such as cash or a bank transfer.
  • Deleting a payment record in Splitwise does not cancel a Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal transfer.
  • EvenOut has no Venmo links and moves no money. You pay in Venmo, then tap Record payment so the balance reads zero.

Does Splitwise connect to Venmo?

In the US, yes. As of October 2026, Splitwise’s help center lists Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal as the ways to send money to someone you owe. Splitwise Pay is Splitwise’s own in-app option, and Venmo and PayPal are the outside services it works with. You start from the “Settle up” button on the group or friend, which Splitwise describes as the way to pay someone back or record that you’ve been paid.

The same page says Venmo needs “a USD balance and the Venmo app to be installed and logged in on your device.” Venmo’s own user agreement says you must be in the United States and have a U.S. bank account to use the Venmo services, so the Venmo option applies only to people in the US.

What does Splitwise offer outside the US?

Outside the US, Splitwise lists a different set of options:

  • Select European countries: Pay by Bank, a bank-to-bank transfer that you switch on from the Account tab.
  • Everywhere else: “Record a payment.” You send the money some other way, such as cash or a bank transfer, and then record that it happened.

Recording works in the US too. Splitwise says you can record a payment made outside Splitwise, so a person who pays a friend in Venmo directly can still clear the balance in Splitwise afterward.

How do you get money from Splitwise to Venmo?

A Splitwise balance is a running total of who owes whom. Money moves when the person who owes pays. In the US they can do that from “Settle up” using Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal, or they can pay you in Venmo directly and record it. If you are the one who owes, the same button is where you pay.

What happens to the balance after you pay?

A balance changes when a payment is recorded, and the record and the money can drift apart in two ways. Splitwise says deleting a payment record does not cancel a Splitwise Pay, Venmo or PayPal transfer, so removing the record after you paid leaves the money where it went and puts the old balance back. For the steps, see how to undo a Splitwise settle up.

The other mistake is paying outside the app and forgetting to record it. The balance keeps showing the old amount, and the person you paid may ask again for money that already arrived.

How do you keep Venmo and a tracker in step?

Venmo moves the money and the tracker keeps score. This works the same way in any expense app.

  1. Read the balance. Say you owe Marco $86.40 after a weekend rental.
  2. Pay in Venmo. Send $86.40 with a note that names what it covers. If you are the one owed, request the money on Venmo and wait for it to be accepted.
  3. Record the same amount in the tracker. Use the same people and today’s date.
  4. Check that the balance reads zero.

If you send only part, record only that part. Sending $50 of the $86.40 leaves $36.40 owed, and the tracker should say so.

How does this work in EvenOut?

EvenOut records payments and does not move money. It has no Venmo links, so you pay in Venmo yourself and then log it.

Open the friend or the group and tap “Settle up”. The balance cards (“You owe Marco” or “Marco owes you”) fill in the amount, and “Record payment” saves it. A confirmation screen tells you that you are settled up. Partial amounts work, and EvenOut shows how much is still owed. A recorded payment can be deleted and restored, but not edited, so a wrong amount means deleting the payment and recording it again.

When someone owes you, “Remind” shares a message through your phone or sends an email from EvenOut with the amount and a settle-up link. EvenOut sends no push reminder for this, and it allows one nudge per person per group or friend per day.

What should you do next?

If you are in the US and want to start the payment from the balance, Splitwise’s Settle up lists Venmo for that. If you would rather pay in Venmo yourself and keep the running balance somewhere else, record each payment as it lands. For the wider picture, see Venmo vs Splitwise vs EvenOut, and for the habit itself, how to pay friends back and record it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Venmo request count as a payment in my tracker?

No. Venmo says charge requests must be accepted before money is sent, so nothing has been paid until the other person accepts. Record the payment in your tracker once the money has landed, not when you send the request.

What if I record a payment but never send the Venmo?

Then the balance reads zero while the money has not moved. A tracker only keeps score. Delete the payment record (EvenOut asks "Delete this payment?" and lets you restore it later) or send the money.

Can EvenOut send a Venmo request for me?

No. EvenOut has no Venmo links and moves no money. Its Remind button shares a message or sends an email with the amount and a settle-up link, and you can then send the Venmo request yourself.

Why does the same balance look different in Venmo and in a tracker?

A Venmo request is a single charge for a set amount. A tracker keeps a running balance across many expenses and payments with the same person, so one request can settle all of it or only part.
