How to pay your friends back and record it
Quick answer
Add up what you owe each friend, take off anything they owe you, and pay each person once. Choose Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, Apple Cash or cash by the amount and by what your friend can receive. Then record every payment so the balance reads zero. In an EvenOut group, Settle everything you owe records all your debts in one go.
Key points
- Net first. If you owe Ana $18.50 and she owes you $7, you pay her $11.50 once. With Ben's $32 that is 2 payments, not 3.
- Each app has an entry rule: Venmo needs a US bank account, Zelle an eligible bank account, and Apple Cash a US recipient aged 18 or older.
- Limits matter above a few hundred dollars. An unverified Venmo account can spend $299.99 a week, so a $450 share needs verification or a different route.
- A payment in another app is not a record. Record it in EvenOut so your balance reads zero, using a partial payment if you pay part.
- A recorded payment can be deleted and restored but not edited, so check the amount before you tap Record payment.

How do you pay several friends back in the fewest payments?
Net the debts first, then pay each person once. A payment that goes both ways between two people is wasted effort, because the smaller debt cancels against the larger one.
Say you owe Ana $18.50 for pizza and Ben $32 for concert tickets, and Ana owes you $7 for parking. Paying everything as it stands is three transfers: $18.50 to Ana, $32 to Ben and $7 from Ana to you. Netting Ana’s side gives $18.50 minus $7, which is $11.50.
- Pay Ana $11.50. Her $7 never moves.
- Pay Ben $32.
That is two payments and $43.50 leaves your account. Only debts between the same two people cancel this way. You cannot take Ana’s $7 off what you owe Ben, because Ana does not owe Ben anything.
Which app should you pay with?
Use the one your friend can receive on without opening a new account. The apps differ in what they ask of the person on the other end, and these are the entry rules as of October 2026.
| App | What your friend needs | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Venmo | A Venmo account and a US bank account | Unverified accounts can spend $299.99 a week. A credit card costs 3.00% to send with. |
| Cash App | A Cash App account, which only US residents can open | Unverified accounts can send $1,000 in a rolling 30 days. A credit card costs 3%. |
| Zelle | An eligible checking or savings account, enrolled with Zelle | Your bank or credit union sets any limit and may charge a fee. Once the person is enrolled the payment cannot be cancelled. |
| Apple Cash | Age 18 or older, living in the US, a compatible device and two-factor authentication | Standard limit is $10,000 per message and $10,000 in 7 days. |
Cash works too, and it needs nothing from either side. Pay a friend $11.50 in cash and you still record it, because the app is only where the money travelled.
Zelle’s own advice is to send money only to people you know and to double-check the email address or mobile number before you confirm. The same habit pays off on any app when you are typing a friend’s number from memory.
How does the amount change the choice?
Small amounts fit anywhere. Larger ones run into limits, and the fees depend on how you fund the payment.
- Under $50. The amount sits inside every limit in the table. Paying Ben $32 from a bank account, a debit card or a Venmo balance costs $0.00. Funding it with a credit card costs 3.00% on Venmo, which is $0.96 on $32.
- A few hundred dollars. An unverified Venmo account stops at $299.99 a week, so a $450 payment will not go through in one week. Cash App allows $1,000 in a rolling 30 days for an unverified account. Zelle limits are set by your bank, and a standard Apple Cash account allows up to $10,000 per message.
- More than that. Verify your identity where the app asks, or use the transfer your bank offers.
Limits and fees are set by the companies and can change, so check the number inside the app before you rely on it.
How do you record a payment in EvenOut?
Pay in your own app first, then record it so the balance moves. EvenOut records the payment and does not move money, so it adds no transfer fee or sending limit of its own.
- Open the group or the friend’s page and tap Settle up.
- Check who paid whom. The sentence at the top reads “You paid Ana”. Tap either name to change it.
- Pick the balance. In a group, tap the card that says “You owe Ana” and the amount fills in, here $11.50. On a friend’s page the card reads “Your balance”. Or type the amount on the keypad.
- Tap Record payment. A confirmation appears and, once the full amount is in, your balance with Ana reads zero.
In a group, when you owe two or more people, a card called “Settle everything you owe” appears with the total, or with the number of balances when they are in different currencies. Tapping it records a payment to each person you owe, so Ana’s $11.50 and Ben’s $32 go in together. Where Ana’s $7 sits in the same group as your $18.50, the balance already reads $11.50.
If you and Ana share two groups, her friend page shows one balance and, under “Where it comes from”, the groups behind it. Settle up from that page records the full balance where it lives, one payment for each group and for the direct balance.
What if you can only pay part now?
Record the part you paid. Say you pay Ben $20 today and the other $12 on Friday. Type 20 in Settle up, and the screen tells you that $12 will still be owed. Record the second payment on Friday and the balance reads zero.
A recorded payment can be deleted and restored but not edited. If you typed $23 instead of $32, delete that payment and record it again with the right amount.
What should you do next?
Net your debts, pick an app your friend can use, pay, and record it the same day. If people owe you as well, how to keep track of who owes you money covers the other side of the ledger. To compare the apps in more detail, Venmo vs Cash App vs Zelle vs PayPal vs Apple Cash goes through fees and limits. Keeping one place where each payment is recorded means nobody has to scroll through bank statements to prove you paid.
Frequently asked questions
What if my friend is not on the app I am paying with?
It depends on the app. As of October 2026, money sent on Venmo to a phone number or email that is not linked to an account can be claimed by opening one, and is cancelled and returned if it sits unclaimed for 30 days. A Zelle payment to someone who has not enrolled expires and returns to you after 14 days.
Why does EvenOut tell me to pay someone I never bought anything with?
Simplify debts is on by default in a group. It reshuffles who pays whom so the group needs the fewest payments, and everyone's total stays the same. If you owe Ana $20 and Ana owes Ben $20, you pay Ben $20 and Ana pays nobody.
How do I pay back a friend when the expense was in another currency?
Pay and record the payment in the currency of the debt. EvenOut tracks each expense in its own currency, keeps balances per currency and does not convert, so the Settle up screen has a currency chip for matching what you owe.
