Netflix extra member cost and household rules in 2027

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

As of October 2026, a Netflix Extra Member costs $7.99 a month with ads or $9.99 without. Standard allows 1 Extra Member and Premium up to 2. Extra Members are people outside your household: each gets their own account, password and one profile, watches on one device at a time and must be in your country.

Key points

  • Extra Member slots are $7.99 a month with ads or $9.99 without, as of October 2026. Standard has 1 slot and Premium up to 2.
  • A Netflix Household is the devices at the main place where you watch. You may not share your account outside it.
  • Extra Members cannot be added to ad-supported plans, third-party-billed accounts or some packages.
  • A slot with ads costs $1.00 less a month than the person's own ad-supported plan, and a slot without ads costs $10.00 less than their own Standard.

What is a Netflix household?

Netflix defines the household in its help center like this: “A Netflix Household is a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix. You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.”

Netflix sets the limit by devices, not by people. How many can stream at the same moment depends on the plan: 2 on Standard with ads, 2 on Standard and 4 on Premium. These plans cost $8.99, $19.99 and $26.99 a month in the US as of October 2026.

How much does an Extra Member cost?

An Extra Member costs $7.99 a month with ads or $9.99 a month without. They are for people who do not live in your household, and not every plan offers them.

Plan Plan price a month Extra Member slots Slot price a month
Standard with ads $8.99 None Not available
Standard $19.99 1 $7.99 with ads, $9.99 without
Premium $26.99 Up to 2 $7.99 with ads, $9.99 without

What does the whole account cost with slots filled?

Adding slots raises the account total by the slot price each time. Each cell shows the total with ad-supported slots first and ad-free slots second.

Plan Plan alone 1 slot filled 2 slots filled
Standard $19.99 $27.98 or $29.98 Not available
Premium $26.99 $34.98 or $36.98 $42.97 or $46.97

Premium with both slots filled and no ads is $46.97 a month, which is $19.98 more than the plan alone. Over a year that is $563.64 for the whole account, of which the two slots are $239.76.

What does an Extra Member get, and what are the limits?

Each Extra Member gets their own account, password and one profile. These are the conditions:

  • They watch on 1 device at a time.
  • They must be in the same country as the account owner.
  • They cannot be added to ad-supported plans, to accounts billed through a third party, or to some packages.

Those limits are the main difference from sharing the plan inside a household. A household member uses the owner’s account and counts toward the plan’s devices at once. An Extra Member has a separate login.

Household, Extra Member or their own account?

Pick by where the person lives and what you are willing to pay. The table gives the fit and the monthly cost for each case.

Who the person is What fits Monthly cost
Lives with you, where you watch Your household Included in your plan
Lives elsewhere in your country An Extra Member slot, if your plan has one free $7.99 with ads or $9.99 without
Lives elsewhere and your slots are full Their own account From $8.99 with ads
Lives elsewhere, but your plan has ads or is billed by a third party Their own account From $8.99 with ads
Lives in another country Their own account Priced where they live

A person on their own account pays for their own plan, so the owner’s slots and device limits do not apply to them.

How do you split the cost with an Extra Member?

Agree on one method before the first charge. Say two people in a household hold Premium at $26.99 and add two Extra Members at $9.99 each.

  • Slot fee model. Each Extra Member pays $9.99, and the two household members split $26.99, which is $13.50 and $13.49.
  • Equal model. All four split the $46.97 total, which is $11.74 each, with one person paying $11.75 so the total is exact.

Both are fair when everyone knows which one applies. The equal model costs each Extra Member about $1.75 more a month than the fee model, and each household member about $1.75 less. In EvenOut the fee model is one monthly expense paid by the owner with “Exact amounts”, and the equal model is the same expense with “Split equally”. Someone who is not on EvenOut can be added to the group as a guest and invited later. EvenOut records who owes what and moves no money.

What should you do next?

Decide who is in the household and who is outside it, then match each person to a row in the table above. The per-person math for a household is in how to split Netflix, and what concurrent streams are explains why the 2 and 4 device limits matter. Other services sell similar slots with their own prices and rules, as in Disney+ sharing and HBO Max extra members.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an Extra Member for a year?

$119.88 for a slot without ads ($9.99 x 12) and $95.88 with ads ($7.99 x 12) at today's prices. Choosing ads saves $2.00 a month, or $24 over a year.

Is an Extra Member cheaper than their own Netflix account?

With ads, a $7.99 slot is $1.00 less than the $8.99 Standard with ads plan. Without ads, a $9.99 slot is $10.00 less than their own $19.99 Standard plan. The own plan allows 2 devices at once, where an Extra Member gets 1.

Do other services sell Extra Member slots too?

Yes. Disney+ allows 1 Extra Member per account, and HBO Max sells an Extra Member add-on at $7.99 a month. Each has its own conditions on age, country and devices, so check them before assuming Netflix's rules carry over.

How do I split the cost of a slot with the Extra Member?

Agree whether they pay the slot fee or an equal share of the total. In EvenOut the fee version uses Exact amounts and the equal version uses Split equally, on one monthly expense that you paid.
