HBO Max extra member: cost, limits and who qualifies in 2027

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

As of October 2026, the HBO Max Extra Member add-on costs $7.99 a month on top of your plan. Each account can add one person, who must be 18 or older and in your country. They get their own login and one profile and stream on one device at a time. You cannot add one if you signed up through a connected TV, phone, another provider or a bundle.

Key points

  • The Extra Member add-on is $7.99 a month, as of October 2026. Each account can have one, who is 18 or older and in the same country.
  • The account itself can be shared with people who live with you. Basic with Ads and Standard allow 2 devices at once, and Premium allows 4.
  • Signing up through a connected TV, phone, another provider or a bundle rules out the add-on. The other person then needs their own subscription.
  • Owner plus one Extra Member costs $13.24 each on Standard and $15.49 each on Premium when you split the bill in half.

How much does an HBO Max Extra Member cost?

As of October 2026, the add-on is $7.99 a month in the US, before tax, billed on top of your base plan. Over 12 months that is $95.88. HBO Max lists one add-on price, and the extra member gets the features of your plan, such as 4K on select titles if you have Premium.

Premium is the only plan that allows more than 2 devices at once. These are the base plans the add-on sits on top of.

Plan Monthly Annual Devices at once
Basic with Ads $10.99 $109.99 2
Standard $18.49 $184.99 2
Premium $22.99 $229.99 4 (2 for sports)

Who can use your account without paying extra?

People in your household can. HBO Max says the account “can be shared with the people who live with you (the people in your household).” Standard allows 2 devices at once, so a household of five on Standard can still only watch on 2 devices at a time.

Someone who lives elsewhere is outside that rule, and the Extra Member add-on is HBO Max’s option for one such person. A second person outside your household needs their own subscription, because an account can have only one Extra Member.

Who qualifies for an Extra Member?

Both of you have to qualify. The account owner needs to live in the US and to have subscribed directly on hbomax.com. The add-on is not available if you signed up through a connected TV, phone, another provider or a bundle, including the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle. In those cases the other person has to sign up and pay for their own subscription.

The person you add needs to meet two conditions:

  • Age. They must be 18 or older.
  • Country. They must be in the country where you signed up. They do not have to live with you.

What are the limits of the add-on?

An Extra Member is a separate login with a few fixed limits.

  • One per account. HBO Max currently sells one add-on per account, so one extra person.
  • One profile. They get their own account, password and a single profile.
  • One device at a time. They can watch on any supported device, but only one stream at once.

Those limits are why the add-on is not a way to share one login with several friends. If three friends want in, one can be your Extra Member and the other two need accounts of their own.

What does it cost per person?

With one Extra Member, the account total is the plan price plus $7.99. Splitting that evenly between you and the extra member gives the last column. These are arithmetic, not HBO Max prices, and they assume the two of you each count as one person.

Plan Plan plus $7.99 Each of two people
Basic with Ads $18.98 $9.49
Standard $26.48 $13.24
Premium $30.98 $15.49

HBO Max requires a base subscription plan under the add-on. If your household is bigger, divide by everyone who uses the account. Premium at $30.98 shared by three people is $10.33, $10.33 and $10.32, which adds up to the full amount.

Is the add-on cheaper than their own plan?

Yes at every tier, with fewer devices. An Extra Member costs $3.00 less a month than their own Basic with Ads plan, $10.50 less than their own Standard plan and $15.00 less than their own Premium plan. In return they watch on 1 device at a time, where their own plan would allow 2 or 4.

For someone who watches alone, one device is usually enough. For a couple or a family in another city, their own plan fits better.

How do you split the bill?

Agree one of two rules before the first payment. Either the extra member pays the add-on fee only, or the two of you split the whole bill.

In EvenOut, add the plan as one expense in a Household group, set the category to Subscriptions and set “Repeat” to “Monthly”, so each later month is added for you. Choose “Split equally” for a whole-bill split, or “Exact amounts” and type $7.99 for the extra member if they cover only the add-on. A person who is not on EvenOut can be added as a guest, and “Settle up” records their payment when it arrives. EvenOut records who paid and who owes. It does not collect the money.

What should you do next?

Check how you signed up, because that decides whether the add-on exists for you. Then pick the split rule and write down what the extra member pays. For the same question on other services, see Netflix extra member cost and household rules and whether you can share Disney+ with family. The shared plan cost per person calculator does the division for any price and number of people.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the Extra Member if I cancel the add-on?

HBO Max says they can keep streaming until the end of the add-on's current billing period. If you instead remove the person yourself, their access ends right away, so tell them before you do it.

How do I add an Extra Member, and how long does the invite last?

Sign in on hbomax.com, go to Subscription, choose Get Add-On and invite the person. The invitation expires after 7 days, so send it when they are ready to activate it.

Can the Extra Member keep their watch history?

An existing Adult profile can be moved over, which keeps its history and recommendations. Kids profiles cannot be transferred, and an Extra Member has only one profile.

Does the Extra Member use up one of my 2 or 4 devices?

No. HBO Max says their stream on one profile and one device does not use up the main account's own limits. You still get your plan's full device count for your household.
