Can you share Xbox Game Pass with family? Home Xbox rules
Quick answer
As of October 2026, Xbox's US Game Pass page lists no family tier. Sharing works through your home Xbox: anyone who signs in on your home console can use games from your subscription, and you can switch your home Xbox up to five times a year. Split the price among the people who use that console.
Key points
- The US Game Pass page lists Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC only, and no family tier.
- Sharing runs through your home Xbox. Anyone who signs in on that console can use games from your subscription.
- You can switch your home Xbox up to five times in a year, so a group that moves the home console should plan for it.
- Ultimate at $22.99 a month is $11.50 and $11.49 for two people, or $7.67, $7.66 and $7.66 for three.

Is there a Game Pass family plan?
Not on the US plan page. As of October 2026, Xbox lists four plans and no family tier: Essential at $9.99 a month, Premium at $14.99, Ultimate at $22.99 and PC only at $13.99. Essential and Premium each show a first 14 days at $1. All prices are before tax.
Sharing works through a different feature, the home Xbox.
How does the home Xbox work?
Xbox’s support page says anyone who signs in on your home console can use games from your Game Pass subscription. It says anyone, so friends who play on that console count as much as family.
You can switch which console is your home Xbox up to five times in a year. Each switch uses one of the five, so a group that swaps consoles often should keep a count.
The sharing is tied to one console, which settles who splits the cost: the people who sign in on it.
What does each person pay?
Divide the monthly price by the people who use the console, you included. Essential, Premium and Ultimate are the three rows below.
| Plan | Monthly price | Two people | Three people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99 | $5.00 and $4.99 | $3.33 each |
| Premium | $14.99 | $7.50 and $7.49 | $5.00, $5.00 and $4.99 |
| Ultimate | $22.99 | $11.50 and $11.49 | $7.67, $7.66 and $7.66 |
The cents rarely divide evenly, so one person’s share is a cent off from the others. Over a year, Ultimate is $275.88 (12 times $22.99), which is $137.94 each for two people and $91.96 each for three. These are shares of one bill, not prices Xbox charges, and they only hold when everyone keeps paying.
What does sharing save?
If the people already share one console, one subscription costs less than one each. Say two people each pay for their own Ultimate. That is 2 times $22.99, or $45.98 a month. One shared Ultimate is $22.99, so the pair saves $22.99 a month, which is $275.88 over a year. Three people on their own plans pay $68.97 a month, and sharing saves $45.98 of that, or $551.76 over a year.
That compares price only. Xbox’s plan page lists what each tier includes, so read it before you drop anyone’s own plan.
How do you split it fairly?
One person holds the subscription, and the others repay them. Here are the steps.
- Name whose subscription it is. That person pays Xbox and their console is the home Xbox.
- List who signs in on it. Count only the people who really play, and include the owner.
- Wait for the full charge. Divide the real monthly price by that number.
- Agree what a move costs. If the home Xbox switches to another console, that is one of the five switches for the year, so decide who decides.
- Record it. In EvenOut, add the charge as an expense with “Paid by” set to the owner, “Split equally” and the “Subscriptions” category. Under “Photo, repeat, pending or note”, set Repeat to Monthly.
When use is uneven, change the split rather than the price. Say Kai plays most evenings and Rae plays once in a while, and they split Ultimate by shares of 2 and 1. That is 3 shares for $22.99, so Kai pays $15.33 and Rae $7.66, which add to the $22.99 bill. In EvenOut this is the “By shares” option: type the shares and each person’s dollar amount shows under their name.
What should the group agree on first?
Agree on three points before the first payment:
- Who holds the subscription. They pay Xbox and are repaid.
- Who is counted. Everyone who signs in on the home console splits the cost.
- What happens when someone stops playing. Their share leaves the split from the next charge, and the others divide by the new count.
What to do next
Shared subscription plans compared puts Game Pass next to the plans that do have a family tier. For another console subscription with a family group, see Nintendo Switch Online Family cost per person. The shared plan cost per person calculator handles any price and head count, and tracking shared subscriptions and renewals keeps the whole list in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Game Pass Friends & Family plan?
The US plan page lists Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC only, with no family tier. Xbox's Ireland page says "The Game Pass Friends & Family preview has ended in this region." Plan around the home Xbox instead.
Should the first 14 days at $1 change how we split?
As of October 2026, Xbox shows the first 14 days at $1 for Essential and Premium, and says promotional offers may be for new subscribers only. Wait until the full-price charge appears on the bill, then divide that amount, so nobody repays a share of a $1 charge and then has to catch up.
Should the person who owns the console pay more?
That is for the group to agree. An equal split works when everyone plays about the same. When use is uneven, split by shares: with Ultimate at $22.99 and shares of 2 and 1, the shares are $15.33 and $7.66.
Does EvenOut collect each person's share?
No. EvenOut records who paid and who owes, and Settle up records a repayment, including a partial one. It does not move money or link to payment apps.
